Matthew 17:22When they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised to life.” And the disciples were deeply grieved.
They missed the point… now would be the time to get excited. at a wedding You know how they throw the brides bouquet into the women and whomever catches it is supposed to get married next. Imagine if you did that at a funeral. Took the bouquet/spray off the top of the coffin and through it over your head to to see who would catch it… and they everyone would get excited.. probably not because we don’t celebrate death.
The point is this… as followers Christ we should have an understanding that death is a good thing. We put our old sinful man to death… thats good. We are dead to sin… thats good, jesus died… that was good, we will die… thats good. These are all great things in regards to death. AND… when dreams, plans or relationships die that too can also be a good or even great thing. Have you ever had something die and something better grows in its place. Or maybe you had something die and God brings it back to life.
I spent a ton of money and time and talents on planting a church… and replanting the same church and again replanting the same church… only to watch it die and then die again and then finally die again… it was painful, it was hard, it was agonizing and I had lots of sleepless nights with lots of questions as to why why why why…
But had it not died, I would not be at the church I am at now. And I absolutely love my church that I am at now. It is the perfect fit. It is so good that had God not put me in it in the way he did, you would think that I had planned this all along… but not even I could have pulled this off.
How many times do we see people in scripture have dreams seemingly die… and yet God brings them back to life.
Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Samson…
it proves one thing… God is in the redemption business. He takes what was bad and not only pays us back but pays us back even more than expected. That is actually what redeemed means… above and beyond.
So when things die don’t do what the enemy plants in your head which is panic, doubt, fear, rage… rather smile. Like the meme I read recently… “satan whispered in my ear, Im coming for you… I whispered back… bring tacos”. You handle the threats, the deaths and the failures with a smile… because we serve a God who is Lord over death… Death could not keep him in a grave… how could it ever keep you from doing what he has called you to do!

Gideon a great story… Judges 6, 7
He is hiding in a barn thrashing wheat… afraid of the enemy. God sends and angel to him and calls him mighty warrior. He tells him he will lead an army to defeat the midianites who are a pain in Israels asssk me how much of a pain… huge.
So Gideon says God send me a sign…
I will put a fleece out and if the grass around it is wet but the fleece is dry, I know I can trust you.
Boom it happens…
But now Gideon wants another sign. He says I will put out a fleece and in the morning when I come out let the fleece be wet but the grass around it dry.
Boom it happens again.
What is he actually checking? Well he wants to know if it is really he who God said will deliver Israel… apparently it is… Gideon is convinced but not thrilled…
So Gideon gets an army together of 32k men… not bad, Gideon is feeling much more comfortable with this scenario… but God isn’t. God says- to many men - if you win you will get the glory and not me. I want people to know that is was my victory… so make an announcement that if anyone is afraid they can go home… thats like asking kids at school if they are tired they can go home and skip school.
Well 22K leave… up and go home… that will drop the wind in your sail… leave you swallowing hard with a lump in your throat….
But Gods not done.
He says there are still too many…. really God? So God in his infinite wisdom has a taste test to see who should stay and go… he says take them down to the river and let them drink water. Those who get on their knees and lap the water up like a dog send home. Those who are on one knee and lap up the water with one hand while keeping an eye out for the enemy keep those men.
When all is said and done… G’dog is left with only 300 men.
But now God does something strange… Gideon was always asking for confirmation and strength to do what was right… “hey boost my faith”….
Now without asking God does just that. he tells Gideon to go down to the Midianite camp at night… he does and he hears 2 men talking about a dream one of them had… he said this dream surly means Gideon and his army will defeat us. Gideon is supercharged in his faith and runs back to the army and says “its time to act, grace some clay pots, some trumpets and some torches”… and they destroy the enemy through confusion.
What do we learn about faith in the life of Gideon?
- its ok to doubt as long as your honest about it
- God will meet you where you are at… but you must be willing to act on his guidance
- Reassurance won’t necessarily make the task easier
- God wants the credit
- God will continue to build your faith by asking you to do things through the journey of serving him… God kept telling G to cut down the army… sure it was frightening… but at the same time it was a learning experience for Gideons faith.
- finally God comes to Gideon and and without Gideon asking God throws G a bone knowing he is feeling overwhelmed. God wants us to act, but not in fear, so he sees Gideons obedience and wants to encourage him so that he may obey God in confidence and not fear.
And what comes of Gideon after this battle? His demeanor changes… he becomes a true blue warrior… actually a killing machine. He shows no mercy to those who stand against him and the next 40 years while he is alive Israel lives in peace because people see what God has and is doing through Gideon.
Pass the test, and watch what God can do in your life and in your future. Start small with a fleece, and trust him as he answers you. Move forward without having to have any more signs but simply trust his leading. There are enemies to slay!

What Is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is a complex construct consisting of four factors: well-being, self-control, emotionality, and sociability. The factor of well-being encompasses one’s positive self-evaluations, as well as feelings of happiness and optimism. The factor of self-control includes the ability to regulate one’s feelings, including emotions, stress, and impulses. The factor of emotionality involves relationship skills such as one’s ability to accurately perceive one’s own as well as others’ feelings and one’s capacity to experience empathy. The factor of sociability includes one’s ability to communicate effectively, exert influence over others, and build social networks (Khan et al., 2021).
Three of the four subdomains of EI decreased significantly over time. These were emotionality (perceptions of one’s understanding of others’ emotions), self-control (self-efficacy in regulating one’s own emotions), and well-being (positive evaluations of the self).
Now mix these findings with 2 years of covid, panic, anger and isolation from real relationships. It only ignites this problem to a far worse degree.

Sound mind: acting out God's will by doing what He calls sound reasoning
One expositor suggests that the word sodzo could actually depict a person who was on the verge of death but then was revived and resuscitated because new life was breathed into him. It comes to life to LIVE… there is action behind a mind that is alive.
The second part of the phrase “sound mind” comes from the Greek word phroneo, which carries the idea of a person’s intelligence or total frame of thinking — including his rationale, logic, and emotions. The word phroneo refers to every part of the human mind, including all the processes that are engaged in making the mind function and come to conclusions.
When the words sodzo and phroneo are compounded into one word, they form the word sophroneo, which pictures a mind that has been delivered, rescued, revived, salvaged and protected and is now safe and secure to act and decide according to Gods will and word.
How do we learn to have a sound mind? it simply says in verse 8 be willing to be ashamed and suffer… what does that mean really?
First let me say this… I have found through thousands of kids in youth ministry years that the more mature a kid was typically the more pain, trauma, hardship etc… they had gone through. They had to mature, adapt and grow due to life. And there was some structure offered in society to be able to do that.
Much the same happens in our Christian walk.
Work out your faith, put action behind your faith.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER 1 PROBLEM IN YOUTH MINISTRY TODAY AND CHRISTIAN COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITIES (and honestly most churches)? They do not require you to put your faith into action. That is why I love lifestyle Christianity school. Your weekly curriculum is to go out and preach the gospel, evangelize, pray for the sick etc… be willing to be mocked and not be ashamed, be willing to suffer and not be ashamed.
The amount of maturity that takes place in an active follower of Christ compared to a couch potato Christian is worlds apart.
Don’t be dumb any longer, get in the fight. Embrace the suck, love hard things, suffer for Jesus… what ever you want to call it - just do it!
