What is the fastest way to greatly increase the quality of your life?
Jesus?…. ok, maybe, but still not quite as fast as what I am thinking of.
The quality of our friends and the amount of time we allow them to influence us is a premium to how well our life runs and how much we enjoy it!
We think of dating like fishing… if you fish in a mud hole you will catch bullheads. If you fish in a sparkling stream you will catch rainbow trout. Where are you fishing… now today is not about dating or marriage, but it kind of is. Its about relationships… more specifically mens relationships, you could even call them mentors… but maybe that is too formal.
Men are lonely.
Men want more connection.
Men want networks and insight.
Men want friends who are looked up to.
Men want friends who are Godly and are quick with a word from God.
So here is a question: Right now, this very second, what is the pool you are fishing in for friends.
- Work….? Good pool? Bad pool? Stagnant pool?
- Church? Are you deep enough into that pool with bible studies, ministry, serving, small groups?
- How much time do you take for fishing… I like UFC fights, but not for what you might think.
Its easy to get men to come over to the house to watch a UFC fight and eat pizza and wings and drink root beer… Men are relaxed, easy to get to know and I am mentally picking who I want to try to spend more time with. Im fishing! I have had the opportunity to speak at some entrepreneurial events, some for dentists, business owners, chiropractors etc… these are a great pool in which to fish from. I still like church the best.
Much like in marriage and dating…
Contacts create companionship, companionship creates commitment, that commitment creates our character.
Where are you setting up shop for contacts.
This past year I paid $500 a session to meet with a mentor… I was one of about 200 people. I continue to get more from the other 200 than from just the mentor. .. and he is awesome, great. But the pool was far more valuable at $500 than the fishing coach. and that coach was Patrick Bet David, so you know he is no slouch. So here is another great point… the friends I choose will be the lifeguard at the pool that I continue to choose from. What do I mean… of course I am going to meet amazing people hanging out with PBD because he is amazing and it costs me something.
When we talk about the influence of friends… we skip that first part of the process… friends come from the pool we fish from. People who date from the bar scene typically live a marriage that feels like it has bars on it. People who date from apps have a little better chance.. but again that app is set up for “what I want”.
People who get into groups that are about serving, and bettering oneself and ministry, entrepreneurial and bettering the world … they typically marry those who want to be more like Jesus… (and who doesn’t want to be married to Jesus) who want to better other relationships, better friends, better mankind etc… Those are the friends you want… so make sure you are fishing in the right pool.

Anything worth doing good is worth doing…
Not exactly.
Anything worth doing… do it.
In fact Gods word says
Do all Good things, all things excellent things, do only the things you are good at UNTO THE LORD.
Col. 3:23Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men, 24because you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.…
We should not dread work
But we will if we do not use our whole being. Imagine your next job, task and trying to use your spirit and soul, and your mind and your imagination and in trying to make God look good… it will elevate your spiritual conscientiousness and literally allow the Holy Spirit to flow you at a new level and bring “life” into what you do.
It’s not saying we necessarily need to be good at what we do.
Its a form of worship… so we can do things we are not exactly great at… but if we do it as unto the Lord it is worship.
like when your son cleans up the garage floor with a cleaner that actually is used to clean your gun… its super expensive, its not meant for floors, it leaves the floors incredibly slippery and now the whole garage smells like an oil factory. But he put in 4 hours doing it… he did it to make you proud- and you are. He did it for Daddy, and Daddy is happy.
Im not saying stay with a job you hate or a job you are not skilled for.
But you can do any job for any person at any time and still do it for God.
Think of it this way … you can go to the dentist and still do it unto the Lord. How you treat the women at the desk, the assistant, the dentist the whole procedure… you can do it like you are at the dentist LOL or you can do it as unto the Lord. Make God Look Good.

Galatians 6
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
- 6 Do not think more of yourself
Now listen and follow where I am going…
I try to guard my heart and my eyes very very much… I remember while traveling in Argentina in a hotel room with my Dad and another missionary from the area. And we had a TV on watching Monday night football… but their commercials are not like our commercials…
The point: Porn, lust, skin… feeding that is voracious. If you feed it - it is never fulfilled, it only grows a 1000 times more hungry.
WHERE AM I GOING WITH THIS…???
**If you judge others… and lose your heart for them. If you start to think more of yourself… it is never satisfied. You become so blind, you become so self righteous that others are baffled by it… stumped at how you could be so blind to your own arrogance knowing that it is just as offensive as that other persons sin. It is never satisfied.
What if you confronted your brother in Christ and instead of berating him… you simply told him how much of a man of God he is and how you hurt inside knowing God has so much more for him.
This cycle (a husband caught in porn a wife caught in self righteousness) is one of the most vicious blinding cycles in marriage.
- 7 Test your own actions
Test: is it working?
There is only one place in our Christian walk for comparison - and that would be personal comparison.
Compare it to 3 things -
* Against satans kingdom… are we destroying the works of the enemy.
1 John 3:7Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous. 8The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.
* Against ourselves. Am I different in habits, words, actions and thought
Col. 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
- Against Jesus. Matthew 5:48 Therefore be ye perfect like your father in heaven is perfect.
- 8 Carry your own load - be responsible for your own actions, compromises,
Load and burden is different
Burden -a debilitating sin - I need your help, its a sin I need help dealing with it
Load - is your life, daily problems, your circumstances, your personality, strengths and weaknesses
CARRY - Take responsibility
**Don’t wait until someone calls you on your sin to deal with it… take responsibility and deal with it now.
Calling out those who are struggling with the law, rules, judging others etc…

- 3 Careful so you are not tempted (to make yourself look better, become judgmental, see others faults but dismiss their own - judge you by your actions, but judge themselves by their intentions.
*When I am in this position I try to use my own mistakes to act as a buffer before I confront them on their actions.
You know when someone starts to tell you where you need to improve and work on stuff… you have a gut level reaction to want to point out what they need to work on - and they do - so I put myself in that position when I confront someone - I say things like “look I used to wrestle with and I currently wrestle with… and I need people to help me with… I want them to know we are on the same team, dealing with the same stuff… our flesh!
- 4 Carry their burden
Pastor Garth you are so spiritual…. uh yea, right. The truth is I have had people carry my burden with me… even drag me along in my burden and keep me accountable even when I just wanted to give up.
Its not easy carrying someones burden… its heavy, its makes you cranky if you are not careful…
you want to give up!
But I have many to thank for carrying my burden, I am glad they did not give up on me.
- 5 fulfill the law? Remember Chapter 5 of Galatians… fulfilling the law is living in the fruits of the spirit - we just got done covering the law as seen in the fruits of the spirit… now we get to fulfill them by living in the fruits of the spirit.
So what is this saying… well if you back up looking at the end of Galatians 5 and the fruits of the spirit you see two things in the greek text. One is that the Fruit of the spirit is LOVE… and then Love is described by what we call the fruits. - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
so that is fulfilling the law: loving others.
Secondly we then understand that the fruit of the spirit is to be enjoyed by others.
Have you ever had a friend you loved being around just becasue they exude the fruits of the spirit… even when you knew you were a butthead? you got to eat of their fruits… while you were in sin, trouble, bad attitude, struggling - whatever it is! And you enjoy their fruit which helps you step out of what you are working on. Why not YOU be that guy!

Now we just covered the Fruits of the spirit…
love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
NOW if only there was a way to test these fruits… a proving ground, a laboratory if you will ? ? ? ?
Galatians 6
Brothers and sisters, if someone (Adelphoi GK a brother in Christ) is caught (GK leaning towards or currently dealing with) in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore (GK pop a bone back into place) that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load (Don’t wait for someone to call you on your sin take responsibility for your own walk) …
HOW HARD… to not excuse your own faults, your own inconsistencies, your own attitudes, your own SINS.
FALLING, STUMBLING AND DISTANCED
Stumbling… someone is playing with fire - you flirt
Falling… you are in sin and trying to wrestle it or cover it up
Distanced… you just don’t care. Maybe a Christian maybe a non-believer.
Someone falls… how awkward… you are responsible to call them out in love.
What if I lose them as a friend?
*My Dad shared a story with me recently about confronting a man in the church who was hitting on women. He confronted him and was called the next day by his son in law and was threatened… you’ve got guns Ive got God… come and get me~
Qualifications:
- 1 you who live by the spirit should call them out
By the spirit GK = the invisible sphere in which the Holy Spirit imparts faith, reveals Christ, emanating from the Divine Spirit, or exhibiting its effects and so its character
- 2 use gentleness
What did Jesus do? Peter turns his back on Jesus… but does so after posturing that he would NEVER DO THAT. He compares himself to everyone else… they might- but not me. I would die first.

Joshua 14
Caleb… thirty verses define his life. Only 30, what do they say about him?
If you could only have thirty verses about your life… what would they say.
He had energy, health and enthusiasm… even at the age of 85
Numbers 13 he believed in Gods mission for his life.
What is Gods mission for your life.
His mindset was I expect things from God, I expect his promises in my life. I expect God to use me.
Caleb was faithful over the long haul.
SOME THINGS WE LEARN FROM THE LIFE OF CALEB:
4. People with vision that is truly from God have an uncommon depth to them. Their spirit is resilient, reassuring, and refreshing.
5. While others dwell on the giants of life and fall by the way, Calebs dwell on the mountains of promise and keep going.
6. Obtaining the mountain God has for us will involve waiting on God, wading through problems, and wanting it more than anything else.
7. When our want for what God wants for us increases, our want for what we want for us decreases.
8. There is no price too great for a reward that is far greater
1. HE WAS NOT DEFEATED OR DISCOURAGED BY WHAT OTHERS THOUGHT OF HIM
I enjoy considering the meaning of names as I study; at times, especially in the Old Testament, they can reveal something to us about the person. The name Caleb does not reveal the character of this man, but may be an insight into some of the obstacles he faced. Caleb literally means “dog.” One scholar says it means “raging with canine madness.” In our vernacular, I think we would say Caleb was a “pit bull.” The truth is that though Caleb was of the tribe of Judah, he was from a clan in Judah that had a lower culture and a poor reputation.
Notice his father was Jephunneh the Kenezite. This was a wild clan that lived as much amongst the Edomites as the Hebrews. They were not a well-thought-of group. My point is simply this: Caleb was not probably the best educated, nor was he the most cultured man, nor did he come from the royal folk; but he did have a heart for God. He was not going to let his education, his culture, or his family history stop him from being all he could be for God. He became a “pit bull” for God. No giant, no negative Hebrew could stop his zeal for serving the Lord.
2. HE REFUSED TO BE INFLUENCED BY THE NEGATIVE MAJORITY
And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.—Numbers 13:30
When ten of the twelve spies brought an evil, negative report, Caleb spoke in opposition to them and in favor of entering and conquering Canaan. How easy it would have been for him to just blend in. He could have let those articulate ten princes have their say and just nod in agreement.
Why should he choose to go against such an influential crowd? Because the crowd was wrong! Caleb was not going to remain silent while the majority was doubting and disobeying God. Thank God that Caleb was willing to take a stand for what was right even when that stand was unpopular.
3. HE REMAINED STEADFAST THROUGHOUT HIS LIFETIME
Caleb said the Lord had kept him alive for forty-five years from that fateful day when the majority ruled. For forty-five years, Caleb had wandered in the wilderness through no fault of his own. He suffered the same hardships and trials as those who had disobeyed God. Yet, his zeal to serve the Lord had not waned.
Our generation needs to learn the steadfastness of Caleb. I am told that the average time a person is passionate to serve God in our churches is three years. May God help us to have the spirit of Caleb to passionately serve Him all the days of our lives.
Dr. John Rawlings played such a vital role in leading me to Christ and in encouraging me as a young pastor. He was a man who possessed an unflagging spirit. I will never forget as I visited with him when he was ninety-six years old, and he showed me his ten-year ministry plan. When he went to Heaven at ninety-nine years old, he was still planning and serving. God help us to be committed to serve until our last day! Age may require changes in the work of our ministry, but it never supplies a reason to quit serving.
4. HE DID NOT LET OBSTACLES KEEP HIM FROM THE FIGHT AND, ULTIMATELY, THE VICTORY
Joshua 15:13–19 tells how Caleb organized his family to fight the enemy and take the mountain, the walled city, and overcome the giants. Everything in life that is worth accomplishing has obstacles. But knowing God’s will allows obstacles to become opportunities for Him to work through us.
May God give us the spirit of Caleb. There is still so much to be done and more mountains to conquer!

What is Gods mission for your life.
His mindset was I expect things from God, I expect his promises in my life. I expect God to use me.
Caleb was faithful over the long haul.
SOME THINGS WE LEARN FROM THE LIFE OF CALEB:
- He walked by faith, stood apart from the crowd, and looked for the hand of God in every situation.
Can you imagine you are coming back into the tent with 11 other older men… they are all talking about the land of Canaan and all somber and discouraged… Caleb stands up to them. He does not bow to their peer pressure…
You know peer pressure is the original virus. You can feel it in a group and if you are even slightly aware it you know what you can and cannot get away with… in order to stay in good company. I have watched peer pressure literally choke a group of men like a cloud entered he room. Caleb knew that his opinion was going to turn over the apple cart. He did not partake of this social stigma, this virus of mindset, He did not drink the kool aid, he spoke his mind, he spoke the truth and he left things in the hand of the leader Moses.
We need to understand what Caleb knew. I will speak the truth, I will then trust in a faithful God and look for his hand and his leading in every situation… and not go by what the crowd thinks.
2. Caleb asked, “Where is God in this? What is He trying to do and to teach me?” He made statements like, “I must deal with this in faith!” and “We are well able.”
What can we see in this for ourselves? Simply put, when he saw the reality of the situation he then called out on Gods faithfulness. When you see a situation that seems hopeless or dire or even impossible… do you bow to the thoughts in your head. the circumstances or do you immediately have scripture you can quote, claim and go to war with. Or better yet do you have past situations that God led you through that you now pull from memory and plop into your faith bank and draw from. When my Doctor said you have about 2 years to do what you have always wanted to do, so make a will, spend time with your family… you only have about 2 years left to live. I pull that day out every now and then when things look sucky… and I laugh and remind myself of Gods faithfulness now from October 21st 2010.
Know your past victories, know your God, know his word.
3. Caleb wasn’t surface, shallow, or small-minded. He was a man of content, character, and commitment.
Caleb didn’t bat an eye when it came to standing up to peer pressure, standing up to giants or even standing up to Joshua and demanding his mountain.
This does not come from a certain type of personality. I know the brash loud mouth follower of Christ seems to have an endless supply of commitment and unashamed drive to serve God… and yes that can be very much personality (I know, I is one) but I have also met plenty of men who quiet, solemn, driven and committed to God beyond repair. They are ruined for jesus… just not a loud mouth about it. They will still hold their ground and their faith.
So if its not personality what is it that makes us men of character? having the right upbringing? it helps… but no. Having Gods favor before we even knew him? Nope, so what gives us character, conviction and commitment?
Simply put, time with Jesus. an authentic man of God is marked by lots of time with Jesus. You may not know how to spend time with Jesus… here is my recommendation. Go get yourself a bible, some praise music, a journal and just start spending time with Jesus… for 10 minutes, then 30, then an hour then 2 hours and see where it goes. That creates an unshakeable man of God.
Final thought… we often hear conversations of “what would you do if… The truth is that a man of God will always do what God wants him to do. it doesn’t matter if it costs him his job, reputation, family connections, money or even his life… this was the life of caleb. Lets follow his lead.
