What is a problem a setback…
Well it’s an opportunity… ever hear someone say “you see a problem and I see an opportunity”. It sounds so righteous and confident and even brash… You know the “I’m an overcomer and I turn lemons into lemonade”.
But what if a problem, pain, setback, dilemma, obstacle, headache, doubt… call it what you will (maybe just call it life) what if its not seen as an opportunity to overcome, but rather as a test to prove your commitment to Christ.
What if you never achieve a positive outcome from that bad in your life? What if it becomes your thorn in your side like the apostle Paul.
You never do get out of debt.
You never do get healthy.
You never do have your own company.
You never do gain a healthy relationship with that person.
You might see it as a failure… you might second guess and blame your sin or your inconsistencies as to why you don’t have your breakthrough….
OR you can simply see it as a test that you will pass. A test that allows you to say to God - I will serve you no matter what! In the Good, the bad, the ugly and the unknown - I will love you and serve you.
NOW you might wince at that and think… gee Garth is that all you got. It seems a little naive - but look at the opposite. If everything is going well for you than your commitment to God and love for him is pretty disingenuous. You prove your love and commitment not in the luxury of life, but in the fire of life.
When a young couple gets married they are typically in the throes of infatuation… Everything is good, they are young and healthy, full of hopes and dreams… Yes they love each other in the sense that they have strong emotions for one another… but love is an action and actions are proven in times of fire, hardship, pain, discomfort, monotony and even sin.
Micah 7:8 the prophet says Do not gloat over my enemy, tho I have fallen I will get back up.
Lets put legs on this verse…
Do not let my problems take over my mind and beat me up and tell me my problems are bigger than my desire to serve God. Because even tho I have problems, I will continue to serve him regardless… I will always get back up!
Micah is choosing to revel in his problems… for in those moments in his life he gets to prove his love for God.
I once had a conversation with a man who’s wife had an affair with another man. Now this was a good husband, a Godly man but his wife had lots of baggage and abuse from her childhood and much of that led to her having an affair. When I asked him why he didn’t leave her he said “well that was my opportunity to prove to her that I truly do love her in good times and bad times… the greater the test the greater the proof of my love for her”. And guess what- it made their marriage stronger than ever. She expected him to leave, she expected him to move on, he had a biblical right to do so… but when he stayed she was convinced that he must truly love her.
When you have a problem that might seem to never end, then it might just be a never ending opportunity to prove how much you love God.

Let me catch you up to speed on what Paul is thinking here in Galatians speaking to the Religious leaders…
What you do or don’t do, what your theological beliefs are or are not, I don’t care if you are the head apostle of the bishop baptist holy roller church of God, if you are the senior pastor, the prayer leader, the apostle, the head of the world wide starve my feeding children… I don’t care. What matters is are you making new creations.
17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
The ROOT WORD USED HERE IS KOPTO… Meaning an intense striking, beat the breast…
PAUL REALLY REALLY REALLY MEANS THIS
Marks/Branded GK = my body and MY reputation has taken a hit for the sake of the gospel.
Paul draws a line here in the sand that is quite remarkable.
From now on I will allow No more trouble/ GK no more fatigue or whining arguments no more you should do this you should do that….

We are not in the business of making bad people good (that just turns into law keeping) we are into the business of making dead people alive in Christ.
Paul says When you come talk to me, come brag to me about what Jesus is doing through you and how amazing he is.
Illustration: Today a few of us get talking after church… a few board members, a few from the worship team a few regular attenders… and I share
- This week in the gym talking to the manager… and God draws my attention to another woman. Pray for healing for her head and heart
- Sharing the gospel with the manager at the gym
- Talking the a woman and her son at the gym about Jesus
- Giving money to someone in need
- Talking Jesus to a person at Cub
- Praying for a person to be healed
- Praying for someones business
Im not spiritual enough God uses Pastor Garth because he’s less sinful, he’s more spiritual OR.. .some would think Who does he think he is… he thinks he’s all that, I bet most of that didn’t even happen they way he said it did. But Let me change the story… Im sitting around a circle with Tom Scarella, Shane Holden, Rod Marquette, Kelly Freitag, Tom Alexander, Tom Stamman, some of the most fireball lovers of God who live the gospel… and I tell these stories… what happens then? THEY ALL START TO TELL STORIES IN THEIR LIFE…. and in that we are get fired up. *quote: you can’t talk big audacious life goals around people who do not have the same hunger and drive as you, it will just sound like bragging. THE POINT IS: If you think I am bragging when I talk about Jesus working through me- you are not being used by him NOR DO YOU HAVE the same hunger to be used by him. *-*- When I share these daily stories with others who are living it, doing it, breathing it… they get fired up. They tell me stories and I get fired up! The donkey told the tiger, "The grass is blue." The tiger replied, "No, the grass is green ." The discussion became heated, and the two decided to submit the issue to arbitration, so they approached the lion. As they approached the lion on his throne, the donkey started screaming: ′′Your Highness, isn't it true that the grass is blue?" The lion replied: "If you believe it is true, the grass is blue." The donkey rushed forward and continued: ′′The tiger disagrees with me, contradicts me and annoys me. Please punish him." The king then declared: ′′The tiger will be punished with 3 days of silence." The donkey jumped with joy and went on his way, content and repeating ′′The grass is blue, the grass is blue..." The tiger asked the lion, "Your Majesty, why have you punished me, after all, the grass is green?" The lion replied, ′′You've known and seen the grass is green." The tiger asked, ′′So why do you punish me?" The lion replied, "That has nothing to do with the question of whether the grass is blue or green. The punishment is because it is degrading for a brave, intelligent creature like you to waste time arguing with an ass, and on top of that, you came and bothered me with that question just to validate something you already knew was true!" The biggest waste of time is arguing with the fool and fanatic who doesn't care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions. Never waste time on discussions that make no sense. There are people who, for all the evidence presented to them, do not have the ability to understand. Others who are blinded by ego, hatred and resentment, and the only thing that they want is to be right even if they aren’t. When IGNORANCE SCREAMS, intelligence moves on. I would add, when religiosity screams the gospel moves on!

The incredible life… to be alive, to feel alive… What does that mean for most? I am not sure but I see people chasing after it.
Jn. 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Jesus did not say I came to stop the thief… but rather I came to give life.
Jn. 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Again Jesus did not say This is not the way, that is not the way, why would you do this or believe this… What are you thinking… Nope, rather he just says I am the way, truth and life.
What am I trying to say… scripture is very clear that in the end times (and that is a relative term… meaning tomorrow or in 10 years) but in the end times people will no longer be a lover of truth but will choose to believe a lie. Let me put legs on this… people will choose to not look for life or a better life (the truth) but will in fact attack your “life” zoe, fulfillment as if it were not the truth… WHEN IN FACT IT IS!
Researchers Marvin reznikoff, George Domino, Carolyn Bridges and Merton Honeymon studied what made great disruptors or innovators or people who were able to find the LIFE/Zoe in things. The two clear resonating factors were those types of people do not worry about others happiness but rather looking for new ways to find their own. And in fact found that group think or thinking what the masses think is a sure way to unhappiness and will not allow you to innovate or find your own way.
We live in a world of group think… in that all of those who are unhappy blame it on those who are different. It is not enough to promote transgenderism… I have to hate anyone else who is happy that does not support my belief.
When you don’t feel alive you want to punish those who do. God did not come to make bad people good, but rather dead people alive…
And people who do not have Gods LIFE/Zoe are truly hated by the group think agenda in our world.
If you are truly walking in life - and you have lived a while here on the earth you see something happening that is very much a sign of the end times.
It is no longer enough for others to hate that they are empty/dead… now they have to hate that you are full of life. And in fact want to cancel your ability to be happy/have life.
This is not just seen in the sinner/saved relationship. It is now seen in culture with anyone. Look at the fuss over Joe Rogan… people want to cancel him because he believes in free speech… ACTUALLY NOT REALLY. It goes deeper than that, they want to cancel him because he is doing what makes him feel alive. And he isn’t even a Christian.

The problem with most men and many women for other reasons is loneliness.
Men feel lonely because they do not feel like they have an ability to connect.
Women feel lonely because they connect, but typically on only a surface level… as one friend called it “Window dressing dinners”. You get together over coffee, dinner or a function and you all just pretend you are good friends.
And covid has only made things worse…
BUT HERE IS THE REAL ISSUE…
The problem is we know what a good friend is like, we know what best friends are supposed to be like, we even know the simple basic principles of friendship… the problem is we have forgotten how to make friends.
Remember as a kid you could make friends with a total stranger at the park?
So what are the building blocks of making friends?

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Encourage: Paraklete, come along side, actually invite their presence into your life.
Want a friend? Be a friend. Invite them into your life… from activities to personal stories to honest dialogue about yourself. But come along side others and invite them into your life… no facade, no pretentious behavior, no posturing… just invite them into your life for who you are. Some will walk with you, others will not, some will pretend to for a while… You will get burned a few times, but you will also make some great friends by invitation.
Build one another up: Build the foundation. Start with the basics in friendship. you know we used to have an easy time building friendships as kids because it was built around the basics like discovery. I like this, you like this… wow we both like this - and the friendship starts.
I love the line in the movie stepbrothers… “did we just become best friends?” - Yep. They are figuring out what they all have in common… and yea, I won’t go there, but they discovered a bond in commonality. I was in the Carlsbad caverns a mile down under ground listening to a guide talk about the bats and more interesting facts. Well the guy next to me was in awe, I was in awe and he said something funny about it, I responded and before you knew it we were both enjoying each others company discovering the story behind the cave. We ended up talking, laughing and becoming friends.
I went to a gun class on defensive shooting… met a few other guys there and in the middle of this class while learning/discovering new things I connected with quite a few other men… just like when we were kids.
Keep doing it, don’t get a clique… I run from friends who want a clique. If you have a group of friends and they can only be friends with those in the group… you don’t have friends, you have a membership club that costs you your freedom and friendship with others.
Never stop making friends… some of you are a 2 degree shift away from losing all your friends. What do I mean? You only have a couple friends and if one moves or and one dies… you are back to zero. Never stop making friends. The word here for Continue doing it in the greek is Poy-eh-o. It is an interesting word that means keep making stuff out of anything. Keep making any friends…
Yes even non Christian friends.
I have a hobby… I love making friends with the odd duck.
Let me give you some examples on my friends list:
Ethiopian woman who is very strange and smells
Inner city heavy set woman with a temper
Gang banger
Tattoo artists
Hitman thug drug dealer (BTW he is white and 45 yrs old)
Teenagers who are spoiled rotten, snide and insecure
Old men who are transgender or gay
Multi millionaires
Scientists
Hipster podcasters who are into DMT and shrooms
People who share different faith or religious views… i.e. Muslim, Bahai, Occult and yes… I hate to say it… even Calvanists - ok, its a joke, but honestly some of us have a harder time making friends with other Christians than with the hardened sinners out there.
The point is…maybe you can’t make friends because you are looking for the perfect friend… he aint out there, she does not exist. But if you practice what 1 These. 5:11 says you will have more friends than you know what to do with…. trust me on this… I’m your friend!

Mega Church in Tennessee Pastor was down and not feeling well so some of the staffers went to his house to surprise him and lift his spirits… it seems there were already a few things lifted. They got there and caught him and another female staffer with just about nothing on. Well, actually he had on boxers and she had a towel draped around her. Their explanation was pretty believable… she came over to make him feel better by making him chili, and she spilled it on her… poor girl. So she had to take her clothes off to clean them… apparently they are chili different in Tennessee than we do here in Mid west… our chili typically doesn’t soak all the way through our drawers into our undergarments… Just for the record I have never asked my wife how that stain got on her bra- only to have her respond… oh the chili today spilled soaking through my sweater and camosakl and just got all over my bra. Now hold on…. even if it did… you mean you would feel so bad about chili on your undergarments that you would take them off at your boss’s house to wash them….
Sure
But not to be outdone. The pastor is in his boxers or briefs… depending on the chili I guess. He spilled chili on himself too, but it did not soak through his pants only her blouse…. but he felt so bad he took off his clothes… all of them except his boxers… it makes me wonder if in the future if he ever does preach again happens to close a sermon by saying something like “in closing I will keep this brief… and people flinch when they hear him say brief… stupid joke.
Now I am making fun of this situation and yes it is also tragic. Innocent men and women are not divorced by their spouse who was cheating. That means some have lost their ability to pay bills. The church body takes another black eye, and non christians just nod their head and say “yep, sounds like the hypocrites I know”.
Prov. 6:32-34
32He who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. 33Wounds and dishonor will befall him, and his reproach will never be wiped away. 34For jealousy enrages a husband, and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance.…
You know Paul mocked the religious leaders for their sin and error. He told them that if obeying the law of circumcision was right then why not go the whole way and totally emasculate yourself. That is crude, funny and very full of mockery….
Jesus mocked the religious leaders of the days…
Now I am not saying you should mock others, I am not saying it is right or wrong… what I am saying is that sin invites mockery from the world be it Christian or non Christian
Guilt comes for what you did
Shame comes from who you are…
Look this podcast is a little jaded and I will be honest, I want people to come to Christ, I want people to repent. I want people reconciled in their marriages… but I also want people to be caught in their sin and face the music… hopefully to repent and step back into a right relationship with Jesus… maybe not back into ministry or their marriage… but more importantly into right relationship with Jesus.
And this is the point… stop with the excuses… no one believes you and secondly you now mock God and his grace. His grace is able to forgive your sin and renew a right spirit in you - if you are willing to face the music.
What a different story had they caught the couple, the pastor said “wow, good thing you got here, I was right about to go to work on my employee in bed - but you caught us. I guess its time to repent”.
I know not so simple… but it beats lying about it. Man up and just say “its not about the spilled chili… but rather about spilling the beans”.

Americans on average 13 cars in a lifetime.
Buick, VW, Ford, Ford, Ford, VW, Toyota, Honda, Toyota, Toyota, Toyota,
Brand Loyalty fromm boomers in the last 25 years is ZERO… thats staggering. For Gen X…. They don’t even know what brand loyalty is… For Genz Z they have some loyalty… but it is more of a fan base, meaning they are loyal until the next hit comes.
But where is there loyalty that rarely slips…
Self care loyalty is huge and rarely shifts.
What do I mean by self care….
Well if you are a woman and you get your hair done, nails done or work out/weight loss - that is self care.
If you have a Doctor, nutritionist, Dentist, whatever is about you taking care of yourself. The fact remains the same - and its this: if you can combine feature with relationship you will almost never change- even if it is a huge price difference.
I want to go to a Doctor that I like, and that is competent. But if he is only competent, but a rude or seemingly uncaring person… I will leave him for a competent and caring doctor.
We use to always go to the same place to buy a car or get our groceries… not anymore because there is no personality tied to it.
Today, relationships are everything.
So where am I going with this? We often want more open doors to share Christ… well it starts with how you treat people. How you treat those at work, in your neighborhood, church, coffee shop, doctors office, mechanic, the 1-800 operator.
When you have relationship skills that connect you with other people it gives you a divine advantage to share the gospel.
I was on the phone last week with a bank… waiting online for 30 minutes… usually the hold line plays horrible background music… but they didn’t. So I used it as a way to start a fun conversation with the operator. By the time I was done I was telling her about Jesus.
We can build short term loyalty by how we treat others… and use it to share Christ. we can build long term loyalty with anyone and again use it as a way to share Christ… if people simply like us, we can tell them just about anything. Maybe that is the ultimate secret to witnessing.
As followers of Christ Remember this one thing: When it comes to sharing Christ… he is not the brand, we are! They better like who we are or they may never give Jesus a chance.

The greatest advice you have ever been given… I know it hands down. Now you may have some great advice, you may have been given some great advice that changed your life… but I am going to go out on a bet and say this is still the best advice ever in the world… because in a sense it entails all the other great advice out there in the world.
Ready… Here it is:
Don’t give up, never give up, refuse to give up… at any cost at any time no matter what do not quit trying. You may quit an approach, or certain strategy… but do not give up on the outcome, the ideal behind it.
Is it be rich, is it be loved, is it to grow a massive company, is it to learn a new language, is it to mentor men, is it to build your own boat, your own muscle car… to make amends with your daughter…
Fail, but don’t give up
Rest, but don’t give up
Tray a 14th time, but don’t give up
Let everyone tell you that you are crazy, but don’t give up
Lose all your money, but don’t give up
Remember my podcast on what is a man? Prov. 24:16 A man though he falls six times will get back up… a 7th time. Seven is the perfect number… it means continue for ever. How many times did Jesus tell Peter to forgive people? 70x7… right here the author of proverbs… I believe Solomon wrote this one (smartest man on the planet) said a man does not give up.
Why do we give up? I truly believe it is not because we get tired or don’t know what else to do or try… I believe we almost always give up over time because of fear…
We began to fear that we may actually never finish the task, complete the mission - create our envisioned future!
Fear is always built on a lie deal with the lie, and fear will die! You deal with the lie by replacing it with gods truth, what has God said about this situation? God’s word brings faith with it and when faith comes in fear goes out! Fear cannot abide or dwell in the environment of the truth. You eliminate fears environment by dwelling in the environment of the truth. Faith is always built-in Gods word, built on the truth, live in the truth, and you and your future is fear proof and faith filled! Steve C. Shank
The truth in gods word causes one to continue to move forward regardless of the failure they face because they know what God has spoken in them, to them, over them in his word.

In the middle of your battle, your life, your mission your calling your family legacy remember….
The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But if he can't kill you he will scare you. If he can't scare you he will offend you. And if he can't offend you he will distract you.
Any or all of these can cause a person to give up…. don’t ever give up.
