Have you ever run a marathon? I have… well it was actually a half marathon… not quite a half marathon exactly… more like I ran… to the gas station… the one called marathon… so yea in a way I ran a marathon… or I guess to a marathon… but lets not get ticky tacky over the minutia!

John 19:30 It is finished.
His life was finished… but his resurrection was the exclamation point to his life. What do you think he meant when he said “it is finished”… well I am sure the ramifications of that statement could rabbit hole down a lot of theological ideologies… and all good I would imagine. But here is one insight I would add.
CONCLUSION: IT IS FINISHED/VICTORY
Several hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a crucial battle occurred between the
Greeks and the Persians upon the plains of Marathon (the land between Persia and Greece). The battle raged for hours. In many respects it was a fight to the finish. Finally the numerically inferior Greeks, the underdogs, managed a tremendous tactical win, but there was a problem. Soon the Senate, many miles away in Athens, was to vote and would most certainly ratify a treaty of appeasement. In desperation they sent a runner in full battle gear to go the twenty-seven miles to tell of the news. By the time the young boy got to Athens he had run a Marathon. It is said he was totally spent, that he literally ran himself to death. In his exhaustion he was able to utter only one word to the Athenians: "Victory."
Today we come to church with the sound of the Hallelujah Chorus still
resonating in our ears. We have been to the empty tomb. We have heard the
glad news of resurrection. And now it is time for the church to send a
message back to the world. What should that message be? May I suggest that
it could be a single word: Victory.

This is a touchy subject… no pun intended. If I say wives should submit to husbands sexual appetites so that they are not tempted - it makes woman feel like just a end to a means… basically an object for a mans affection with no real connection. Men will rah rah and women will feel as if I am betraying them. If I tell men that women are to be treated with love and respect and you are to care for them as your own bodies - Men might worry that it empowers their wife to say no to sex and feel justified… Even use it as a weapon.
Now both premises are correct in scripture. Yes women are to give themselves to their husbands so they do not fall into temptation…
And yes men are to love their wives and serve them even if that means saying no to their own sexual desires…
so what are we to do?
Well I think the insight comes from the Apostle Paul who says men and women should submit to one another and throws in this little catch “men love your wives as Christ loved the church”. he does not say “oh and wives love your husbands as Christ loved the church”.
I think if one looks at the balance of Scripture it shows that a mans sex drive when ruled by the overarching principles of scripture make it clear that he may not get all the sex he wants and in fact it might be the one thing that really causes him to push into God.
If a man who really wants to be like Christ is having little if none sex with his wife, he has 3 choices: give into lust ie. porn or an affair, Pout and sulk and try to punish his wife, Or push into God and realize that satan would love to use this powerful motive in our lives to keep us from growing in our faith - so we instead push into God even more.
The truth is that God has in some ways earned the right to tell us what to do… he died for us, he empowers us, he lived for us, he died for us and he continues to do so even when we do not serve him 100%. What am I trying to say? Men we are to be like Christ to our wives. Paul said that it is Gods kindness that leads us to repentance. Might your unmet needs in the bedroom be a catalyst that causes you to earn your wife’s love, devotion and body in bed.
Are you Jesus to your wife?
Have you earned the right into her bed and her body by how you love her, woo her, make her feel appreciated, put your confidence in her, physically be affectionate with her, speak life to her… make her feel safe not just physically but emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
Emotionally… she can share her fears and hopes with you.
Mentally… you won’t call her stupid or belittle her
Spiritually… she knows you seek God and choose to follow his leading.
Look the truth is that when Kim and I have gone seasons without sex… and trust me due to health issues we have gone almost a year (a couple times) without sex… and it was the best thing for both of us. I had to hunker down and seek God in new and revealing ways.
But the flip side is my wife does feel safe physically, mentally, spiritually emotionally with me. I have earned the right into her bed and body… and even if I have earned it and she shuts me down… what a great way to practice Gods grace not only to her but also in my own life trusting God will empower me to focus on him and not on my libido. Believe it or not… you can get sexually frustrated and fail in faith - or you can get focused on faith and be more like Christ and in turn draw your wife affection to you more than ever.
now will this work 100% of the time… not always, but it is still the right thing to do. You may in fact never have sex with your wife again… and guess what? Gods grace can get you through it and even use it for his good and your blessing if you give it to him.

Talking about sex can be awkward… but when I was in Middle school the sex ed teacher had a lisp… now that was awkward. Today CLASS we are
Interestingly, a recent study by Barna asserts that “there is moral ambiguity toward porn.” The research claims that only 1 out of 2 adults and 1 out of 3 teens/young adults believe looking at porn as wrong. The same study explains that among practicing Christians, only 29% report feeling much guilt. Honestly, I was a bit shocked that 71% of practicing Christians don’t even feel guilt when viewing porn. What has happened?
Now today is not really just about porn… however this tells us a lot about where our views are at regarding sex.
Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:18 exhorts, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”
Genesis 2:24 sets sex up as a sacred act between a husband and his wife.
Sacred = A service or act set a part for a deity seen as worship.
When you treat sex, porn, lust etc… outside of marriage it is an act of worship to another God. It is like saying God I am a Christian but hold on for a second while I worship this other God.
Let me make this as crystal clear as possible… in light of marriage: your wife say “oh I love you and am married to you, but hold on while I give this other man whatever sexual fantasy he desires… oh and while you are watching”.
UHM… yea we wouldn’t stand for it, because sex is sacred between you and your wife and God. But how many times we excuse it in our own actions and images and lusts and fantasies.
Our World promotes a sex with a no strings attached philosophy, but even in secular research it has been noted in numerous clinical studies that there is a direct correlation between multiple sexual partners and an increase in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and addictions. A Rutgers University study found: “A relationship exists between mental health and number of sexual partners. As the number of lifetime sexual partners increases, the prevalence of sadness, suicide ideation, making a suicide plan, and attempting suicide also increases.” You are not going to see that on social media!
What is the question really… we worship what we have faith in. We worship God because we have faith in him - Look I am talking about real true, heart pounding worship - not just singing at church or dabbling in scripture a few times a week.
So are our sex habits by faith? (or selfish desires)
Romans 14:23 But the man who has doubts (misgivings, an uneasy conscience) about eating, and then eats [perhaps because of you], stands condemned [before God], because he is not true to his convictions and he does not act from faith. For whatever does not originate and proceed from faith is sin [whatever is done without a conviction of its approval by God is sinful].
1 cor. 6:12-20 Message bible
12 Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.
13 You know the old saying, “First you eat to live, and then you live to eat”? Well, it may be true that the body is only a temporary thing, but that’s no excuse for stuffing your body with food, or indulging it with sex. Since the Master honors you with a body, honor him with your body!
14-15 God honored the Master’s body by raising it from the grave. He’ll treat yours with the same resurrection power. Until that time, remember that your bodies are created with the same dignity as the Master’s body. You wouldn’t take the Master’s body off to a whorehouse, would you? I should hope not.
16-20 There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, “The two become one.” Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever—the kind of sex that can never “become one.” There is a sense in which sexual sins are different from all others. In sexual sin we violate the sacredness of our own bodies, these bodies that were made for God-given and God-modeled love, for “becoming one” with another. Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit?
Why are you dabbling in that?
You know… dating that girl, following that person on social media, playing the “I’m lonely card”…
WE all know it”s an attempt to fill your selfish desires sexually.
Look Gods grace was not just enough to forgive us our sins, it IS enough to free us from our sinful nature. Stop making excuses for your selfish sinful desires and in doing so screaming at God… Your grace is not sufficient, you are not powerful enough to free me from my sin.
It looks bad on you and it is a stench in Gods nostrils!

The greatest turn on for a woman??? A man with integrity and character… oh a good body might grab her attention… but her interest will pale as she finds out you are a luke warm and all words.
As one woman in one of my marriage counseling sessions told her husband…
I feel farther from you in the bedroom than any other room in the house… Why? A lack of Christian character.
What can we do in the bedroom…
Well The bible does not say what you can do and cannot do as far as oral sex, anal sex, feathers, whip cream, whips, candles, oils etc… but it does give some pretty clear guidelines.
I want to honor my wife… but before you think I am a prude… I want you to know that my wife and I have a very healthy, playful and variety filled sex life… I won’t go any farther than to say “yes”… to whatever question you may ask AFTER I tell you the guideline scripture gives us and that we have adhered to.
Does it honor your God?

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Keep the marriage bed undefiled…. what does that mean?
Lets call this defilers!
- Visualizing someone other than your wife while in the act of sex with your wife.
- Lack of Mutual consent,
- others join the party 3rd person,
- using pornography,
- force - we call this rape!
- manipulation - I will give you more money for Xmas
- guilt… its so hard not to lust after other women…
Now I have goofed off with my wife by telling her you can have all the money in my wallet if you go to bed with me right now… she knows I am teasing… but she has also taken me up on it…and yes she walked away with $14 hard earned dollars!
- Bonus: you don’t honor your spouse by talking about it to your friends - wether good or bad.
1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
2 things we don’t like to talk about:
1st… The more you honor your wife / in time she will want to honor you in bed.
2nd… how much time do you pray over your wife… by that I don’t mean “Dear God make my wife horny”. Selfish prayers don’t get answered and they hinder other prayers!

The most recent survey I could find states Pew Forum survey found that 65 percent of Americans believe many religions lead to eternal life — and that 52 percent of American Christians believe salvation can be found in at least some non-Christian religions.
Ultimately, it’s not about whether we can take different paths or religions to find our way to the same God - to eternity if you will, but about the one true God taking providing only one way in Jesus Christ to come and find us.”
So lets assume I am speaking to you as a non Christian and you serve another religion.
How do you expect to please your God (force, power, being etc? (I don’t ask about how to get to heaven, because that is a complex answer for many religions… I keep it simple)
Even if they have never thought of this question they usually always come down to works.
And then I slowly turn the conversation towards love.
Because Jesus is love I often wonder how other religions experience love… its abstract at best. But Jesus came down to make the abstract, the fluid if you will - well to make it tangible. To make it personal. How do other religions make love personal… what must you do to have your God love you?
This starts a pretty good dialogue… and I usually end up telling them they are lucky that they can earn their Gods love… I state- I could never earn my Gods love… That is why he had to come down out of love for me and die on the cross. He did so, that I could know God as my fathers and know his love tangibly and personally.
Why did he do this? Because it is his nature… he simply loves us - I can’t earn it.
Every religion outside of Christianity is built upon the precipice of earning Gods love… yes I said Precipice because it is that huge of an issue and all things hinge on that understanding.
You must earn your standing in every religion other than Christianity.
Humility is needed to understand and accept our dependance on all he has done. To receive through faith and not works his grace and to even desperately need his grace to live for him… right down to the strength needed to serve him and become more like him… and in doing so shed our sin nature.
This is why when some people share Christ like its a taunt or a judgement on others… (without humility) or worse like We are right and you are so dumb and naive… it actually is the opposite of the Gospel. I have many times shared the gospel and started to cry again understanding how much I needed him, need him and continue to depend on him.
This is why our gospel is unique and one of a kind… this is why it is right - because it is right for our soul, spirit, mind and body.
Why is Christianity the only way? Because it is shocking and absurd.
That a God (again truly understanding the concept of what a God is) would care so much for us that he would send his son to die in our place, provide the sacrifice, the grace, the love and the wooing of the Holy Spirit to come to him - and want nothing in return except surrender.
Thats why my belief is the only way, and why I will stand on that forever.

On the Passover the Jews were excited to have the new profit or even some thought Messiah enter into the city because they were convinced he would be the new political leader. Once he was King and overthrew the Roman government they could sit back and relax and enjoy easy Street. We are very much the same in today’s political world!
As the church we need to RE-ENGAGE IN THE WORLD OF POLITICS.
THE PASSOVER WAS A VERY POLITICAL EVENT
POLITICS FILL SCRIPTURE

Paul was political a. I am a Roman citizen,
I appeal to Ceaser.
AND EVEN TODAY PALM SUNDAY…
is a political juggernaut in Christ day.
Roman empire vs. Jewish people.
Secular Religion vs. Biblical religion
(Ceaser was God)
In Jesus day there was no separation of Church and state… they were the same! Religion and politics were one and the same!

IT IS NOT MERELY THAT THE CHURCH AND STATE INFLUENCE EACH OTHER and coincide and share the same position.
BUT RATHER THAT THE CHURCH SHOULD JUDGE THE STATE and keep her in line by voting, praying and pointing out sin
***Remember when the Roman state and church (THE JEWISH NATION) joined forces they crucified Christ!
SO WHAT ABOUT SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE?
THE MYTH OF SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
The first amendment reads as follows, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;.” But many think this line in the first amendment says there shall be, “A separation of church and state.”
What it says is that congress shall make no law establishing a state religion, but all citizens can practice religion freely. So where did this myth of separation of church and state come from?
Thomas Jefferson’s letter from 1802 to the Danbury Baptist Association.
When we consider the following we get a different point of view;
- Above the Speaker of The House title in Congress, it says, “In God We trust.”
- Each President at their inauguration has said, “So help me God.”
- Every Inaugural address has included the word God.
- Christmas is a national holiday.
- Our national anthem includes God.
- The Declaration of Independence mentions God four times.
- Chaplains have been on the public payroll since the beginning.
- A Bible verse is engraved on the Liberty Bell.
- Oaths in the courtroom have always included a mention of God since the beginning.
- The dollar bill includes the term “In God we trust.”
- The Supreme Court building has carvings of Moses and the Ten Commandments.
This list is only a few on the inclusions of God that exist in conjunction with our government and its documents or buildings.
In the modern age we hear a lot about separation of church and state. But when we LOOK AT the facts, the actual wording and the intent, we find it is a myth.

ANSWER: Serve God AND Tell others about his love.
God wants me to EXPOSE His love to the world.
2 Cor. 5:18-20 (Witnessing)
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
Be reconciled to God. - this is our message and job to do!
Question for you? Do you love your friends and neighbors and even family enough to tell them they need Jesus or they will not see heaven… that they will never experience true peace.
Are you willing to tell them (in love of course) even knowing they may hate you for it, call you a weirdo, cut you off etc…
Eph. 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
This whole chapter is about being separated from God and being reconciled to him and then doing good works… what Good works? Helping others become reconciled as well.
