World War 1… it was called nerves
World War 2 it was called shell shock
Now we call it PTSD
Today Im going to call it what the scripture calls it and that is lacking a sound mind… No I am not saying PTSD is not real, in fact it is very real. But scripture has a few things to say about all of this….
Regardless of what you call your nerves, fear or trauma scripture has plenty to say about it… today we look at
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
The Greek word translated as “fear” can also be translated as “timidity” or “cowardice” or just plain old loss of control. Life can be intimidating, when things don’t work out, when the tribulations of this life come, we do not have to be intimidated by them, even though we want things to be different. When things are seemingly out of control we can have a sound mind.
Power - Miraculous physical strength and in Miraculous spiritual actions. Dynamite.
Love - What God desires or plans in excess - thats his spirit inside you…
Sound mind - Think like God, respond like God, control your thoughts like God would think… You don’t panic, you don’t fear, you don’t look for the bad, you don’t let the worst play out growing and contaminating your faith.
Here’s what is crazy about this verse… and that is the verse that follows it. Paul says So don’t panic, instead join me in sufferings for Jesus and for his gospel.
You might say, but If I don’t suffer for the gospel, I wouldn’t need his power, love and sound mind… so I will just skip the whole thing. Ok, but you never experience the power of God in all of these areas.
It’s like all the times I have been the hospital for surgery… its 18 and counting. I had to experience the pain in order to understand the power of morphine.
I think most Christians don’t experience his power, love and sound mind because they play it safe and there is no reason for you to experience it. It is specifically saved for those who share the gospel.
In the midst of political fractions and panic, 40% inflation, the media promoting race wars, LGBTQRS and AEIOU lies and agendas…. Wars in the world, commerce across the world is crumbling and the terrorist attacks… it would be easy to just hole up and focus on you and your safety - stay in your lane and don’t cross any boundaries. What a waste of power love and a sound mind. NOW is the time to sow the gospel and to share Christ. Now is the time to experience his power in all areas of your life because you share in the sufferings of his gospel.
There was a famous Pilot in WW I who kept a diary of his fears and it later became a book and many people studied it… it makes me think of all of my journals that I have kept through out the years… there are a lot of stories and not all are good of filled with victory in Jesus… but on the other hand there are plenty where I stepped out for Jesus and felt his power love and sound mind. Those are the stories we should be making- so go for God, go for the Gospel!

So he’s not interested in just building a house for us… he is building a mansion.

1 Thes. 5:17 pray without ceasing….
Matthew 6:9-13
9 Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.

‘why is the lords prayer so short? Because prayer and communion are two different ideas in scripture. Walk in the spirit, pray in the spirit and Pray are all equally important and to be used… but walking in the spirit is the filling - it is the always and again… the constant in our discipleship journey…
Its kind of like this… you have a manual that has all the directions and insights and diagrams. You have a problem that the manual can solve. You think over the manual and you declare to your team we will do this. Then in the middle of working on the solution you say out loud to your team “We have to do A to get to B to handle C”.
So we know scripture, We know what scripture says about the problem, we state what scripture says about the problem. In applying scripture it seems tough so we cry out to God in response to what his word says.
I know this is quirky - but the point is, we don’t have to quote the whole manual or bible to the problem to get to the solution. We must simply know it enough to know exactly what scripture says about that specific problem. We apply it and pray over it. All separate steps.
Let me say it one more way… just to confuse you even more LOL. Don’t think of prayer as your main course of action to get to know God. Communion with God goes way beyond prayer and actually happens when we walk in the spirit… not pray in the spirit - though that is important, but rather we are aware of who God is in our day to day routine.
If you are the kind of person who prays to get to know God… well that is commendable, but what about the other 23 hours and 45 minutes of the day? If you read scripture to know God, again that is great- but it could just end up being an encyclopedia of theology if you don’t actually commune with God.
What’s most interesting to me about the Lords prayer is that the disciples had to ask Jesus how to pray… you would think that would be one of the first things Jesus would bring up to his disciples… right?
ok, guys you are all in on this, so lets work on how to pray - do it like this STEP 1… But he didn’t.
Maybe it was because they were in communion with him daily, all day all the time everywhere… Maybe that was the point. Sure you can pray, but why not first work on just being here with me while I am actually here with you.
AND NOW THAT HE WENT TO HEAVEN HE IN TURN SENT HIS SPIRIT TO ABIDE IN US… So maybe the point is to learn to abide with the Holy Spirit all the time while he is here with us all the time.
Don’t get me wrong and misquote me-=- prayers is important, but abiding is the key.

Act your age and not your shoe size… My sister used to say that to me when I was younger… but at the time my shoe size was actually larger than my age… well now what?
1 Cor. 3:1 -4
3 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people.[b] I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. 2 I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, 3 for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? 4 When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world?
You never sin once you are a Xn… uhm no.
You were never a Xn in the first place if you sin…uhm no again.
You can in fact be a Christian and sin… not just sin, but live a life of sin even after your accept Christ. You are filled with his spirit, but no longer controlled by his spirit! This is called being a baby.
But here is what I want you to Notice about this… there’s something here… if someone is not spiritual or controlled by the spirit you can’t really talk to them, you cannot connect with them because they are not on your level. There are certain things that they will not have register because they are controlled by the flesh. Paul said “when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ”
Now this can sound like I am pushing the emperors new clothes line, but the truth is I have many times found myself in a group of Christians and even ecumenical pastors and there is not much I can really say to the group because they are not spirit filled… and in fact are quite Babyish in their faith… I know I know it sounds like I am posturing and bragging- I’m not- its just the honest truth. And in the same way I have a few pastors that walk much deeper than I do and probably see me as a little underdeveloped in my faith… and could talk over my head spiritually speaking… I get it and I am pushing into grow beyond that… thats the point of this right? Not to stick with milk, and not to go from milk to meat, but to go from milk, to pudding, to bread, to fruits and vegetables and ultimately to meat.
I also find it interesting that they are not talking about worldly things… They are arguing about Christian things… but its still wrong because its in the flesh… its still babyish. Paul nails it on the head with verse four… you are acting just like people of the world. May our prayer today simply be- quit acting like the world… quit acting like babies…. start allowing the Holy Spirit to control you and act like a grown up.

Chris Rock and Will Smith… hhmmmm not sure which side I fall on. Maybe Chris could have asked if he could tell a joke about his wife… that might at least given Will time to respond rather than react. and Im not saying it was wrong or right, or just or fair or deserved… shoot pick a word - Im just not sure. But if it was me in my younger years it would have been bad… now, Im not so sure. Im not afraid to go stand up for my wife- but is there a better way.
The point is “Will Smith was offended”
We live in a society where people are easily offended… Now again I am not saying that will should not have been offended, but it does bring up the point that this younger generation (wow does that make me sound old?) they are called snowflakes, teardrops, weenies… you get the point. But what does scripture say about being offended?
Mark 4:17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
Fall Away = Stumble
Gk = to cause to stumble, to give offense
Usage: I cause to stumble, cause to sin, cause to become indignant, shock, offend.
But why are they offended… they are rootless. They at one point received the word of God into their hearts… but it did not take root, it did not grow… So they became offended when times got tough.
First… how does the word of God grow in our hearts and minds… well we know in John 15 that God is the gardener. He tends to the seed and that we must also be plugged into Jesus. HERES A GOOD POINT, LOTS OF PEOPLE FOLLOW CHRISTIANITY, AND THE BIBLE… BUT THEY ARE SHALLOW IN THIER WALK AND THEIR TIME WITH JESUS.
Here is another reason we can become offended… we forget the warning… oh yea.. your going to be offended. I know Will Smith offered an apology to Chris Rock, but what if he had known ahead of time what was going to be said… and was told hey they are going to offend you - don’t take the bait.
So here is your warning. In life you are going to be offended by your wife’s ex, your old boss, the guys at the shop you talked behind your back… by the pastor who said one thing and did the other- continually… you will be offended by the far left liberal nut job politician - ok you get my drift.
If I told you today you will have the chance to be offended
but if you bite on it you will take a leap away from Christ in your intimacy - and in turn make satan really happy… I doubt any of us would take the bait.
Look I grew up in the church… I have seen multiple people come and go from church to church to church to church… because the pastor or the church worship leader or the youth pastor wasn’t Godly… ok, truth be told they left because they were offended and acted like a child.
There was a slight offense… you know like “they didn’t ask my wife to be the childrens pastor after all she has poured into the work”… or the pastor used me as an example in his sermon- he just didn’t use my name. or the church board didn’t ask me if I wanted to bid on the job they were looking to hire someone for…
These are tiny little pebbles that get into our craw and begin to wear us out and irritate us and we chew on it… and we walk away offended.
Hey Dudley here’s an idea- take the pebble out and get rid of it…. but you can’t because you have the word of God but not the spirit of God working in your life. Mountains out of molehills has become a standard in todays world.
Here is a little secret satan doesn’t want you to know… an offense is usually a non-issue - but then he whispers into our ear how we deserve better. The truth is we don’t want what we deserve- we want Gods grace.

Look at the occupation of men from 1950 depressant versus women. Much like Tucker Carlson talked about
Look at the drop of men’s testosterone over the last 50 years much like Reese has talked about
Fatherhood in todays OR LACK OF FATHERS IN THE HOME has hit as high as 60% with many who have fathers at home still face fathers that are absent in their upbringing and are not present mentally, emotionally or spiritually.
Boys used to grow up under a fathers tutelage working with him, talking to him, be disciplined by him, being taught by him, They were in a sense changed in and through the Godly model of fatherhood…. but without fathers boys grow up not working, lack of courage and manhood mindset, not prepared how to themselves be a father and worst of all- lost in life because of this perfect storm.
So how do men change in todays world? Primarily through one pivot in life….
Men only change through trauma… Today I am asking you to choose your trauma!
Why did God choose David?
Handsome, stood out, cream of the crop, great warrior, smart, great job, Great with a sling, tons of experience
No and in fact, most of these things he shared in common with other boys his age or he did not pick them up and learn them until later in life… he was in a sense a lost boy.
Take for instance even his own father didn’t acknowledge him.
When the Prophet Samuel came to Jesses house (that was Davids father) he said get your boys. They all marched into the living room standing there. and from the first one down they went from great to just ok, to not favorable at all… and David had even walked in yet…. Why?
His dad didn’t even consider him a son, let alone a King
TO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN FATHERS APPROVAL…
Why did God choose the least of the least? Was it simply to prove a point? Well kind of… Not to prove that he can use the worst… though God can… but rather
To prove all you need is to want God. You don’t need your fathers approval - oh its great, its wanted, some would say it’s needed, its not, but it is a huge deal in boys and mens lives…
God wanted to prove to YOU, that you don’t need anyones approval - rather all you need is what David had…
David was a man AFTER Gods own heart
…. that literally means he went after God….
He wanted what God wanted, he wanted God, he was willing to do anything to get to know Gods heart.
I might say it like this… David chose his trauma and his trauma was he realized how much he needed God, how little he knew of him and how much his future and his life depended on him knowing God. He didn’t run to God when he had cancer, or when his wife ran off with another man, or when he lost his job, or when finances went down the tubes or when he hit a midlife crisis… No those traumas choose us, David instead chose his own trauma. He focused on how little he knew God.
Now thats a good trauma. Have you ever panicked at how little you know God. Have you ever had a sense of trauma at how little you have experienced him? Years ago in the middle of an emotional and mental crisis, I was on a missions trip in Mexico and I locked myself in our car with a gallon of water in the 90 degree heat and told God I was not coming out until he met me…
14 hours later… he met me. I chose my trauma.
What will you be willing to choose in order to know God and know what he has for you in your life?
I challenge you today men AND women… choose your trauma carefully before it chooses you.

If I asked you how many times you prayed for the dead and they came back to life... what would be your answer? Probalby zero???
But there in lies the problem... we as Christians are afraid to fail... or as I like to think, we don't like to practice with our faith. The truth is I have had many lunches with men who tell stories of praying for lots and lots of people to come back to life and most of them have not... but they do have some adn those stories are remarkable. We often think that there is no failure in faith... we either have it or we don't. If we fail then we didnt' have enough faith or good faith or whatever you call it.
But the bottom line is this: you gotta practice your faith and God will never chastise you for trying and failing in your Christian walk. We have on record the disciples praying and failing, asking questions and not believing and Jesus never told them to give up. he would say "ye of little faith, and don't you understand yet, or even rebuke them for stupid conversations... but never, never did he tell them to quit trying to exercise their faith until they knew it was perfect.
Faith has to have some element of failure to it or it wouldnt' be faith... it would be fact. I know one thing about living for Christ- the word of God is fact, but living it out takes faith and with that faith comes failure.
If I asked you how many prayers you have had answered in the miraculous, you might say well those are not my gifts and Im not that good of a Christian... but I rarely hear, well I have prayed about 500 times for the miraculous... and I mean intense times of prayer - and nothing has happened. YEA, LIKE I SAID, I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT. but we don't even have that excuse because we fear failure in our Christian walk. Most of us live a safe faith... we don't push it... but is that really logical to say I have a faith in Christ if we can't prove that from our failure of trying to serve christ?
Remember what it takes to be a man? He may fall 7 times but he gets back up. i.e. he never quits trying. He never quits believing, he in fact may never quit failing... but there will be some shining moments in and amongst some of those failures.
Michael Bloomberg once said "If you told me you skied all day and never fell I would tell you to try another mountain". But isn't that what many of us do... we faith it safe... but again is that really a faith. Can you say you have a faith in Christ if you never exercise it? And by that I mean you have lots of stories of failures in trying to live it out.
Look I am not saying that the Christian walk is laborous - thoough at times it can be... but I am saying that it has to have its share of war stories mixed in with the triumph stories. If all you have is triumph stories - well my guess is that then they are quite few and mostly quite bland.

Because its not a choice of action… its a choice of attraction.
Choose to steal a pencil - no you chose to become a thief.
Every choice is a choice you choose to become.

Lust - adulterer or fornicator
Gossip - untrustworthy
But why is this important… well lets read Joshua 24
Joshua 24:15 But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
When Israel is forced to make a choice here it is not just about who you will serve but who you will become and who will enslave you.
If you choose to serve the gods of your ancestors…well then you will be slaves to their gods and you will become like them…
But again, its not about what you become - tho that is very important its who you will attract by becoming that.
So when you want a friend, or a husband or wife… you attract who you are, who you have become. You know why so many marriages are in crisis? Because you married you. I always ask in marriage counseling sessions… would you want to be married to you?
its a great question - especially if you answer it honestly. but it also shows us who we are and what we have attracted into our life.
you want to attract favor and blessing, then become a person of favor and blessing. I don’t know that I will ever run out of money or encouragement because I give it away freely. I want to become that by making that choice and by making that choice I will attract that.
What is the power of a choice? Its what you become and what you become is what you attract~!

Iran and the US is still seeking a deal for oil… Iran is upping its nuclear capabilities. War and now rumors of war with Russia and Poland and or germany. And if you haven’t been paying attention Putin has been marching through Africa killing and taking control much through aligning with other dictators, Kings rulers etc… Inflation is sky high, The US is torn between Republican and Democrat, pro life and pro abortion, Pipeline vs. no pipeline, etc… not to mention There is talk of WWIII on the lips of many. There are rumors of other wars swirling. There is talk of a new COVID variant, fuel prices are soaring, supplies are dwindling – the negatives go on and on. But we, as Christians, need not fear. The One who knows the end from the beginning has made us a promise:
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

This is so comforting because we do not find the word “unless” in or following this great truth. That means that when the world is filled with uncertainty and fear, we have soundness of mind and no fear. That means that when troubles come that weaken the human spirit, we have power through the Holy Spirit.
So what do we do during this time?
Give more - Expect more - Trust more! Give more what? Money, time, give a stronger witness in sharing Christ.
Why? I want people to see Gods goodness, his protection and his redeeming power in the life of believers.
My wife and I had a conversation last week about tithing… and you know what it would be easy to not tithe in todays world… but we do. And this week it has been tight… but I walked into my office and someone had slid under the door an envelope with Cash stuffed in it, I had received another check for $300 and I got a check from my publisher for royalty on my books, then someone dropped of a gas card for $100 and another $125 came in - this all in 2 days…. and I want to brag to a world that is worried that God is my supplier, my redeemer - he snaps the jaw of the devourer and aligns rows and rows of good things for me to reap. Gain is my future as I continue to give to God in all areas of my life. Again, not so I get stuff back, NOPE the only motive I have is to make God look good in these times of panic, want and fear for the rest of the world.
Remember what Hebrews 13 says
Hebrews 13:5-6
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
Let your conduct be without covetousness… what is Paul saying? He is saying quit looking at what everyone else has and wether or not you have enough, or will have enough or how will things work out… Be content and rest in God… he got you bro!
The Lord is my helper GK God will run to you to supply your needs. LOL so we can run after things in a panic or we can just let God run to us to meet our needs. I hate running so I will let God run!
Look Scripture is crystal clear in times of trial: We don’t panic, we don’t worry, we don’t doubt, we don’t strive, we don’t fear - we simply trust God and allow his faithfulness to meet our need and to show off his goodness in our life as a witness to the rest of the world!
