In light of our upcoming conference I am going to give you a sneak peek of some of the things we will be covering. So here is a 5 part series, one point each day over the next week

1. The Saturation of Media and Technology

Most of our children don’t know of a pre-iPhone world. And while this comes with advantages, it comes with even more concerns. Never before have kids spent as much time in front of screens or had as much access to the entire world at their fingertips. The average time on the phone for a teenager is 9 hours a day… what the Phone?

From the 1950's to the present, the media have continuously reformulated the youth culture according to the latest trends in clothing, language, leisure activities, technology, and especially electronic media consumption, which has added to its own influence. The entertainment industry has attempted to read the tea leaves of social and cultural change in order to capitalize on the hungers and discontents of youth. Its sense of nascent trends has dictated its investment in a potential box-office smash, a promising radio format, a likely high-rated broadcast or cable-TV show, and a probable gold recording. In the dynamic interplay between the entertainment industry and youth, the media have learned how to appeal to young consumers, and in turn, American youth have learned how to live a hyped-up, Hollywood version of teen life.

This is talking about the 1950’s on up… not just today!

It’s ultimately about owning your kids so they can make money off of them. But in the meantime… these dangers persist… actually are rampant due to the media’s influence. So what are the consequences?

The threats created range from (here are 4)

laziness - I don’t have to study I can google, I don’t have to work I can just build a social media following, I don’t have to go to my friends I can just face time them,

Did you know that teenagers today are only as active as those over 65…. Hello? That is not a compliment.

And now we have renamed it… its not called lazy…It is now called a physical dysfunction… no you are just lazy.

Obesity, - Our nation is sick for one major reason. We eat too much. PERIOD. More than any other symptom of technology is that it makes us sedentary… We lack movement and we overeat. Put the phones down and run. There was a father I read about who had his kids earn electricity to charge their phones by riding on a bike… a little extreme, but not a bad idea. Let me shoot straight - your kid is fat and getting fatter!

Worldview implications - I never heard of being Gay until I was in Middle school. And even then I never had to choose or even think about wether I was gay or not until someone challenged my beliefs in College. Today kids at the age of 5 are being TOLD they are gay, lesbian, transgender, bi…. our God view is challenged daily by the worldview media shoves down our throat. How many parents were not ready for the conversation about sex… but now its about sex with the same sex, or even being nonsexual, binary etc…

Low self-esteem.

Look your kid already has a hard time fitting in and feeling like they are good enough. It is all a part of normal adolescent development and Even if you are an amazing parent and you love your kid emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually- they are still being told everyday they do not measure up. Media tells your kids how bad they are or how great they are… Jesus simply tells them who they are.

look girls have it the hardest, they are told to be sweet, kind, hot, sexy, smart, athletic, innocent, worldly… Did you know A psychological study in 1995 found that three minutes spent looking at a fashion magazine caused 70% of girls to feel depressed, guilty, and shameful. What do you think those numbers are today in light of that little phone in your daughters hands.

Don’t be happy, Don’t be rich

Be overflowing…

Every time I pick up my phone, which ok like most of us is a lot, I am hammered by social media that I can be rich, skinny, ripped, successful, oh and rich and successful and again be happy and Rich and successful.

Look, I love business, I love being an entrepreneur - but honestly I love the challenge more than I like the money part of it. I have always liked challenges: writing books, speaking to new audiences, pushing past physical limits in the gym, I love new ideas to start businesses etc… but I am not looking at any of these to BE happy - I do these things because I know my personality and I know what makes me happy - again, not to be happy, but to make me happy. What’s the difference? Its just the life I have created to meet my own personality, my gifting, my talents, my skills… when I create a life that uses those I am happy… but wait there is more.

Happy is still overrated. Fulfillment is where it is at.

Quit running after happiness. Quit running after riches.

So yes, I have filled my life with friends, challenges, jobs and hobbies that tickle my fancy… or should I say use my skills, gifting’s and personality… But life can still suck. And that makes me unhappy. HOWEVER… I can be fulfilled and that trumps everything.
I could be in a deadend job, and not using my skills, gifting, passions, desires personality etc… and still be fulfilled.

I like to ask Students what weighs more - A 1000 pounds of lead or a 1000 pounds of feathers… Sometimes they slip up and say a 1000 pounds of lead. I correct them… they are actually both a 1000 pounds, however the feathers look easier. Right? But there is the confusion in life. We see people who have it made, they are rich, big house, beautiful spouse, hot car, killer clothes… etc… and we think they are happy… maybe, but they all have problems… there’s are feathers… but still a 1000 lbs, mine is lead, but still a 1000lbs. I can have have problems and not be happy, I can have problems and be happy, I can have no problems and not be fulfilled and I can have lots of problems and be fulfilled… so what gives?

First lets get practical… what would make you happy? Seriously have you given it any thought? I would like a house out in the woods, with room to shoot and hunt. Watch the stars at night and big windows to see the snow and rain. My own little gym to work out in and plenty of room outside to play with my grandkids. Maybe a 68 corvette to cruise into town late friday nights for ice cream. I also need to preach, make love a few times a week with my wife. That would make me happy. I have most of those (still working on the corvette) Now If I run after what social media says I need to be happy… I ain’t even close.

But secondly I need to figure out what makes me fulfilled… here is the secret - to be continually fulfilled. Ephesians 5:15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

Hey be careful how you live… this is stating it as a pre-existing thought before you actually try to live. Its like “hey bro, think this through, is this really the path you wanna choose? Do you wanna run after riches… because that may not make you happy”.

Paul Goes on… make the most of every opportunity, - that right there is so important. Are you making the most of every opportunity. they say at the end of our lives we will not be upset at our mistakes, but rather for the things we did not try- the opportunities we chose not to take. and finally he says do not be drunk on wine which leads to debauchery… what the heck? Ok, so this is a statement that the church in Ephesus understand because it is a saying or cliche about a god of sex drugs and money… Paul is saying if you don’t find out how to be filled - that would be fulfilled continually, you will run after things that make you happy… for a little bit, but then in time ruin your life completely. You will run after more things in greater intensity to be happy, instead of being fulfilled continually. This comes through the spirit of God dwelling in us. And so how does that happen Garth…

Ready for this… simply time alone with God.

It always comes back to time with God.

Whatever problem you have - the solution is ultimately more time with God. To be continually filled with his Spirit.
Quit running after happiness and take time to be fulfilled!

5 Fallacies a day - Day 2

Proverbs 26:4

The key to understanding a fair fight is stick to the topic at hand and stick to what scripture says -

If people don’t want to fight fair - or argue fair - then walk away. Don’t engage.

and here are 5 ways people try to trick you to do just the opposite.

Red herring A red herring is an emotionally charged issue brought up to divert attention from something the manipulator wants to avoid.

Why do we need to tax the rich even more? Well if you had ever grown up with your moms newest boyfriend stealing your stuff, and your to poor buy groceries… I was suicidal the whole time growing up. You want kids to kill themselves just so the rich can get richer?

Shifting the burden of proof Manipulators know that having to prove an argument true makes their job more difficult; so they try to shift that burden to their opponent.

I have actually seen Christians do this. they get into a debate or argument with an atheist and they say “well prove there is no God… if you can’t actually prove there is no God then I guess there is one”.

Well that sounds logical at first… but it’s not. There is a God because of many reasons- but not because you can’t prove there is not a God. You don’t prove things out of a void.

Slippery slope This implies that the end result of today's actions could be something terrible.

If I give you a raise you will have extra money and you will use it for drugs and alcohol And we all know you have a problem with that… and then your parents blame me for you throwing your life away.

Spin Spin doctors use the media to positively represent their own viewpoints and encourage criticism of others. For example, after a political debate, each side rallies to declare their version of the outcome, hoping to spin the desired perception their way.

If you have ever seen the CNN and Fox news coverage of a presidential debate your swear they both saw different debates. They spin whatever comes their way to make it look in their favor.

Bill Cosby tells a joke about his father coming up stairs and yelling at he and his brother… quit jumping on the bed. If I come up here again you all getting a whooping. Sure enough they are jumping on the bed again… their Dad comes up and says alright you all getting a whopping. Bill says it wasn’t us… his dad laughs and said well then who was it. Bill said. a man climbed through the window and jumped on the bed and then ran off. His Dad said “Your room ain’t got no window…. Bill replies… uh, he brought it with him.

Spinning the facts for your advantage….

Straw man "You say you want to reform the criminal justice system. What, do you want to free all the criminals?" We do this all the time: take an argument we disagree with and mischaracterize it so it looks weak or extreme, thus making our own side appear more reasonable.

Again this is classic abortion drivel. So you want all the women who are raped and get pregnant to miss school or lose their jobs.

Look we can disagree and still love those we disagree with. When we realize that satan has blinded the minds of those who do not see scripture as truth.

This year there is going to be 2.6 million weddings in the US alone. and all I can think about is… wow that is a lot of fighting coming down the pipe!

Ignoring the evidence Traditionally called apiorism. We often ignore things we don't want to consider for fear they will produce more work or further confusion.

So Ben Carson was recently quoted as saying “if it is just a fetus, than why are we harvesting human tissue and organs from it?” Proabortionists will just say “well thats not the point OR it doesn’t matter what you call it…

Most people who argue or debate you will do so out of ignoring the facts. If is your job to continue to point out the facts.

Loaded label or definition Loaded labels or definitions use words that evaluate or have different connotations.

Again a classic is we have redefined killing an unborn child from Murder to abortion and now to pro- choice.

Most big businesses and politicians are highly skilled at that. Careful that you don’t fall for a reasonably labeled extreme.

Non sequitur Translated as “it does not follow,” non sequitur refers to any claim that doesn’t follow from its premises or is supported by irrelevant premises.

YOu can’t give me a ticket, I never get tickets. OR You can’t possibly say the President is suffering from dementia… we have never elected a president with dementia.

Poisoning the well Arguers poison the well by discrediting an opponent or opposing view in advance.

They can’t possibly tell me how to build wealth… all their wealth came from their rich daddy.

I can’t possible believe in Christianity… the Christians I know are the most hypocritical and stuck people.

Post hoc, ergo propter hoc Meaning “after this, therefore because of this,” this fallacy happens when a sequential relationship is mistaken for a causal relationship. “Cramming for a test really helps; I crammed for my psychology test and got an A.”

The best way to pay off your debts is to play the lottery… I bought a couple tickets and paid off my whole school loan.

The Fear of the Lord… i.e. I want to make sure I make him look good.

And when that is my motive, he will use me and guide me in discussions, debates or arguments.

Ad hominem This trick, literally translated as “to the man,” subtly or overtly distorts a person's character, destroying their credibility no matter how valid their argument is. “How can you believe what they believe, they bomb abortion clinics, they made fun of my Mother, they don’t even have a job”

Appeal to authority Traditionally called Argumentum ad Verecundiam. People often listen to someone famous or powerful, even to a celebrity who has no connection with what's being endorsed.

You might hear or see it like this… Well Brad Pitt thanks God for blessing him and says he loves God and he thinks abortion is right”

All that matters is what God thinks and by that I mean what he says in his word.

Appeal to fear This trick causes your audience to fear others and seek your protection. "Politician X will take away your freedom of speech!"

Well if you don’t believe in climate change your kids will starve, freeze or burn up from the heat… thats what Bill Gates says! You better recycle like me and drive a hybrid and not use anything plastic.

Appeal to pity (or sympathy) "I know I made a poor decision. But let's just look at how hard this is." This allows manipulators to avoid responsibility for something.

I am not saying abortion is right or the best choice… but she was raped, she is in college, her boyfriend took off…

We can empathize and still stick to Gods word in a loving and accepting way.

Appeal to popular passions Traditionally called Argumentum ad Populum. This trick implies that the manipulator shares the same views as the audience. "I know you'll all agree with this, ladies and gentlemen."

This might be thrown at you like this… well we all know God forgives right? And boy am I glad he does, we all mess up… who here hasn’t messed up. Right, see all the hands up in the air…so I can live with people committing crimes to promote an issue, they are just like us. we all have our own sins and we all need forgiveness.

Why should we believe you!

Where do my answers come from

**Always from the Bible!

Hermeneutics the study of the methodological principles of interpretation of the Bible or literary texts.

Rule #1 Find out what it meant to the original audience.

What did it mean to them in that context.

What it meant to them is what it means to us.

Rule #2 Check it with the whole counsel of God. Does it stand up to the rest of scripture.

No scripture in context will contradict other areas of scripture.

CLASSIC - Rev. 3:16 But you are neither hot nor cold but lukewarm so I will spew you out of my mouth.

God does not want you against him when checking the whole counsel of God.

AND #1 PRINCIPLE - you must study the context it was written in and find out what it meant to that audience.

Rule #3 You never define scripture or theology through the silence of scripture.

“Jesus never said homosexuality is wrong”

Well he actually did -

Do we throw out all of Pauls writings? Peters, James, Lukes etc…because they say a lot of things Jesus did not say.

In the context of Homosexuality and what Christ said is this:

Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus defines marriage

Context:

The 2 most outrageous things Jesus said was

He was the son of God - infuriated the Jews
Sex should be between a man and woman in marriage.

Thus he did not have to say no sex with animals, neighbors, prostitutes, unmarried people etc…

Using “DO YOU BELIVE WOMEN SHOULD PREACH - BECAUSE PAUL SAYS THEY SHOULDN’T!

First of all we were discussing or even debating a totally different topic… and she came at me with this. Now I believe what she meant to ask me was do I believe women should be senior pastors… and I do not… why? I just don’t see it clearly in scripture… that is not to say women can’t be pastors, or evangelists, or prophets or worship leaders or teachers etc… In fact we see these positions filled by women in scripture. My question is this: What does Paul mean when he says women should be silent in the church.

Lets look at the actual verse.

1 Cor. 14:34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

GK: (gynaikes) (sigatōsan) (en) (tais) (ekklēsiais) (autais)

(epitrepetai) (lalein) (alla) (hypotassesthōsan) (kathōs) (ho) (nomos) (legei)

Why read it in the greek? Because it is very telling. Paul uses a word for speak in the greek…

speak: Gk Lahleo - speak or talk

In all other places when Paul is talking about Preaching he uses the word: euaggelizó

So Paul is not stating that women should not preach nor that they should not have places of ministry in the church…

the woman who threw this out was actually using it as a Red Herring - this is one of the 21 flaws in debates.. and we are going to cover these in the next few days…

But still why Did paul say this?

First rule in hermeneutics is to understand the context… and then we will look at the word Submission.

the context is Corinth was a city that had the temple of Diana which offered 6000 prostitutes as priests… and your worship involved sex with prostitutes that again were called priests… I bet most men did not miss church back in those days… right?

So when many of these women came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ they flooded the churches and CAME from a situation where they were used to being in charge, speaking up and were not used to the formal understanding of how a church service was run… and along with all the other shenanigans that were going on in the church - and it was messed up! Paul was trying to restore order in church so people could worship. Remember Jesus with the whip in the temple… it was not so much that they were selling animals, it was that they kept the non jews from having a place to worship.

So paul says you must submit…. hypotassesthōsan

This word is not a harsh word like sit, stay, shake hands… you know like you wold use with your dog. It simply means abide by the guidelines that are expected of you. Look you must Submit at the convenience store- there are certain guidelines that the clerk must abide by, there are certain guidelines you must abide by… it is the simple understanding of protocol. So Paul says this… Women please abide by the rules or the protocol of the pastor so that we can maintain an atmosphere of worship and teaching.

so what’s today about Garth? Simply put, are you creating an atmosphere wherever you are at that gives people the ability to worship. You might be out of line by your language, or you dress, or your attitude or even your spiritual lukewarmness.

Be the person who creates an atmosphere of worship!

Compassion fatigue – too many things to care about so we tune out all of them.

Childrens hospital

Special Olympics

Red Cross

Salvation Army – kettle drive

I think our faith sometimes gets fatigued as well.

Sure God can Move mountains

Sure God can heal

Sure God can do miracles

But just not for me! Its only for a special few.

Gary Palermo came to our church and had a huge revival. People were getting saved, people were getting healed, he was giving words of wisdom and prophecies.

It was supposed to be one week and it turned into 6.

One particular night we got done with worship and Gary came forward and said those who believe God is here to heal them come up right now! You have 60 seconds… A few people maybe 16 out of 600 came forward. He went down the line and prayed for each one and each one got healed. When he was done everyone was expecting him to preach like he did so many nights in a row – He prayed and dismissed. Afterwards there were people who were mad, they came for healing but did not go forward. They were hoping for a build up or to be called out of the crowd and to be healed.

When I asked him that night over a late night supper what was up he said they were the only ones who truly believed tonight for their healing.

If I brought someone up here right now who needed healing of ruptured discs in their back – and I asked you do you think God can heal this person

I think we would say yes

Will he?

Probably not!

We see a story in the gospels of this type of faith!

Mark 9:20-25

20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"

"From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."

23" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

I know God can heal me but he probably wont

How do we crossover from I know to I believe!

Canceling plans last minute

No Axe body spray in the mens locker room… or should I say boys locker room.

Quit calling top 40 country music - music~!

no smoking or vaping outside your own closet.

If you have a cat you must name it after an old Norwegian demi God… like Gundervansleichen and not popsicle toes

The rich must share their cars and shoes…not their money, just cars and shoes

No yoga pants unless you actually do yoga

No grunting with weights unless its over 600lbs

No complaining unless you actually had a major body part removed

Its ok to be alone, especially if you are hiding from the police

When out to dinner, turn off your phone

Make healthcare free so when I over eat, have obesity problems, diabetes, cavities, congenital heart failure don’t exercise and most other things that are my fault from poor choices - make it so I make you pay.

Get rid of the dewey decimal problem

You never have to study geometry in high school

Are we supposed to keep rules?

hey I got an idea, lets break some rules, lets be incredibly unreasonable. Don’t share your opinion if it is offensive… lets break that rule - but break it in love.

Don’t share your faith with someone who has a different faith? Yeah lets break that rule as well

Don’t pray for people in public places. Break it and break it loud

Don’t witness in public places… people aren’t responsive to cold call witnessing like at the mall or on the street…. uhm break that one boldly

Don’t speak out on social issues that might offend people… break break break

Don’t love all people at all times no matter what? Again this should be broken, smashed and put back together just to break it again.

I would be so bold as to say, if you are trying to share the Gospel in love- its a free for all. Break the rules above and beyond. Never be reasonable with the gospel… because the gospel itself is unreasonable

Paul said to some it is like perfume, to others it smells like Poop. The gospel is based on the unreasonable. A God sends his son, who lives a sinless life, and loves us so much that allows us to kill him to forgive us? Soooo unreasonable… and yet so amazing.

Lets all be a little unreasonable today.
