  - 10 Let your kids grow up loved, with a great example…. but let them be normal.

 

What is the toughest job in the world? 

Being a girl in middle school  high school 

 

You think you know pressure? Just wait until you feel like you are truly finding your place in ministry and all of a sudden your kids decide to not follow your beliefs, or they rebel or they get pregnant or hooked on drugs or attract a very raw reputation. 

There is a pressure few know until they go through this. And yes, I went through it. 

First thought today on this last point is this: It took you years to get to the point you are at spiritually… don’t forget your kids are not there yet. They will need to go on their own journey. Love them through it. Just because you would never think about going to a Miley Cyrus concert doesn’t mean they don’t want to go - AND and you should BE THE ONE TO take them. Let your kids be normal. And besides when you are there, they must reflect on who you are, how they have been raised and wether or not this is truly the best atmosphere for them. Kids want to have the newest fashions, the newest kicks, the newest music… don’t make these things a wall, use them to build a bridge. Talk to your kids about their choices in fashion, food, music, media… and ask lots of questions. But realize you will get farther by talking then by telling.

When Ephesians tells children to obey their parents and to submit to them… it begs the question. Are your worthy of obeying? Is your example what they should be following?

Would you want them to have your prayer time?

Your time in the word?

Your instagram pages?

Your attitudes?

Should they value church as much or as little as you do?

Should they use the same language as you? 

Should they have the same values i.e. comparing themselves in order to try to look better than others? 

Should they have the same attitude towards your spouse (their parent) as you have towards your spouse? 

I think we ask a lot of our kids sometimes in that we don’t do what we ask. Examples are better caught than taught right? 

I have always wanted to know and hear Gods voice in a clear and distinctive way. Why? Because I grew up with a super spiritual hunger in my life? Nope… I have always wanted to grow up and work out and be in shape… because I am naturally gifted in athletics… nope.

I have always wanted to read and know my bible… because I want to impress people with my scholarly knowledge? Nope. 

I have always wanted to have an amazing relationship with my boys growing up… because I am worried they won’t grow up to men of success and maturity? Nope.

I wanted to have a vibrant successful marriage… so I would look good and be able to tell others how to? NOPE. 

 

I wanted to hear Gods voice - because I saw my mom hear his voice regularly.

I wanted to read the bible and know it inside and out because I saw my Dad do it.

I wanted to work out and be healthy Because I saw my dad do it. 

I wanted to have an amazing relationship with my boys because my parents had one with me. 

I wanted to have a great marriage because my parents showed me how to have a great marriage. 

 

The only thing worse then your kids rebelling and making stupid choices - is kids doing this in the absence of strong parenting and a biblical example. Kids will follow your example- period. Make sure its a good one. 

Yes let them be normal with caution and lots of conversation about what normal is and if it is safe or even worthy of their attention, but also love them verbally, physically, financially, write them notes, text them… may they never go a day without knowing that you love them.

  - 8 Perseverance is underrated  - satans greatest strategy is patience  and perseverance… we should outlast him! 

 

What happens when you pray and nothing happens, you sacrifice and nothing happens, you give extra and nothing happens, you believe big and nothing happens. Do you give up? Make excuses? Change your theology and scripture to match your experiences?

Or do you realize that it is a simple test to push in. God is calling you deeper into him… beyond the exploits and into his presence! 

We give up in our culture way to easy… Im glad farmers don’t give up. We would all be eating dirt.

 

In David Bodanis’ biography “Einstein’s Greatest Mistake” Bodanis explores the fact that Einstein was a genius, but only after his remarkable perseverance and curiosity. He had the attitude of “what it” as in “well that didn’t work, but what if I _____________ Did it again, tried something different, tried harder, what if I just didn’t give up?  

In our journey of spiritual maturity and exploits in the faith, It would be good to cultivate that same mindset of what if… and just keep persevering. 

 

James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

 

Full affect… what exactly does that mean? It means to persevere just a few times and then give up is not enough. You persevere until it has its full effect - a break through, an answered prayer a miracle… whatever is needed keep persevering! 

So that you get the full affect

So that you are perfect

So that you are complete - in every area

So that you lack nothing - not left behind… others seem like their lives are more fruitful, blessed, anointed etc… Because they persevered! 

 

  - 9 Loving people is hard

 

Do it anyway. 

Jesus said

31Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.

 

People won’t love you back - love them anyway

People will tear your reputation apart - love them anyway

People will take advantage of you - Love them anyway

Look people are mean, stupid, angry, deceived and hopeless… most will never change - love them anyway.

And that is why this is the hardest thing to do! and now we know why jesus is so amazing.

Be like Jesus and love them anyway.

  - 6 Just because your ministry is growing doesn’t mean you should do more.

Bankruptcy comes quickly in todays spiritual world, especially if you treat your life as a ministry. 

 

When I have a wave of supernatural experiences in my life I tend to push in more and see more to do and to pray for… sounds good right? But it is? 

 

A famous violinist named Joshua Bell once played for 45 minutes in a Washington DC Metro station. Though he played a $3 Million violin and had sold out a Boston theater just two nights before, only six people stopped to listen to his music. And only one person recognized him and talked to him and thanked him.

I might look at that statement like this… having a successful ministry and doing more might be a great way to avoid what God wants to do in you.

See sometimes we focus more on what God wants to do through us then in us! That is the horse before the cart. And isn’t that the case especially if our ministry right now seems like it is growing and moving and fruitful. 

 

We can do so much in ministry that 

It can put you to sleep while people are dying and going to hell.  

 

 

  - 7 Just because your ministry is NOT growing doesn’t mean you should do more. 

 

So if your ministry is not growing what should you do? 

First ask some simple questions: is your heart right? Is their undealt sin in your life? Are relationships right in your life? If your ministry focused on bringing glory to God or making you look successful and spiritual? Remember in all things MGLG! 

Then try these

Focus on more prayer

Meet with new voices in your life

Put more time into what is working and where your gifts are at

Here is a novel idea… enjoy the slow times or the times when your ministry is in a lull…. ask God what do you need during this time from him.

My Mentors are Ray Johnston, Tom Scarella, Tom Flahrety, Patrick Bet-David, Tom Stamman, Gary Palermo, Paul Marzahn, David Hohimer, My father and a few others… these have been in and out of my entire life

I am also mentored by books. I try to read a book a week and listen to podcasts that are almost 99% informational and instructional, my favorite is The Huberman lab… 

 

But I don’t just want mentors,  know that I need mentors. I am constantly looking for Mentors. 

 

 

 

  - 5  Mentors are not optional 

You cannot grow without mentors, accountability partners and leaders in your own life. Find those who are more spiritual than you, more biblical than you, smarter than you, more like Jesus than you, more on fire than you and more in tune with his spirit and gifts than you and soak up what they got. 

 

If you want to immediately get ahead an additional 30-50% in any area of life within a year - find a few mentors! It is really that simple! 

 

You know a world class athlete has had up to 15 different coaches in their life to get them to that level. Coaches on nutrition, speed, agility, weight training, coaching for their position, their sport and for the mental aspect of the game. AND THATS JUST SPORTS… we are in the game of spiritual warfare - take it seriously and get a mentor, coach, partner!

  - 3 Strategy is as important as mission and vision

Like anyone who writes Goals… who cares until you write out a strategy to do those goals. Goals are just imaginary wish tales from fairyland unless they have actual steps in place to get them done. 

If you don’t know how to implement a strategy you will fall into the trap of continually changing the vision, mission, purpose or smoother buzz word… but if you CAN implement a strategy you will get a lot done in the kingdom of God regardless of what you call it. WHAT DO I MEAN EXACTLY… God is not random. He wants you to have his plan and strategy for ministry and not just a “letter rip” attitude. How many evangelists I have seen who are mighty, and powerful… but have not strategy. How many Godly men who are respected and loved and are making a difference in peoples lives, but still no strategy. Here is a thought when considering strategy… are you working a plan to recreate yourself? Are you putting money aside for when times get tough. Are you planning out your next 1 year, 5 year and 10 year plan for your gifting, talents and leadership ability. Do you have people right now you are training up under you? What is your strategy to train them up? When you read the gospels… read them again but with an eye for jesus strategy. You will be surprised just how detailed it was.

 

 

  - 4 You will be tempted to cheat on your family because you love God and are being used by him. When I was a teenager we had a guest speaker come to our church who I loved. As a teen ager I looked up to him, he was funny, a great preacher, fun to be around and was a major player for Jesus with the supernatural. He came into town for some meetings and at one of his services in our church he started out by saying that he had to confess that the last 8 years he had been having an affair… oh no, not this guy- and even if you did, why tell anyone… But he went on… My mistress was named ministry… I cheated my wife, my kids and myself by putting more into her than the others. It got me thinking…. and then there was the evangelist who

I worked for who was known through out North America and parts of the world. He spoke to millions, he recorded dozens of albums, he led millions to Christ and his family is a farce. None are truly living for God and even more insightful is that none of his kids get along with each other. Truly disastrous…. but he would tell you right up front that ministry was more important than family… and to him it was… unfortunately his family paid the price and is still paying the price.

My Dad used to say “if Jesus already died for my family… why should I crucify them again over ministry”. 

So you want to be used by God…??? your family doesn’t have to pay the price. In fact they should only reap the benefits from it and never feel cheated.

 -1  Your character will be tested more than your competency 

You don’t need to know how to read a spreadsheet or pass any test per se’ you can be used by God just the way you are… but your character will be tested. Do you want to be used by God more than sleeping with your girlfriend. Do you want to be used by God more than sharing gossip about someone. Do you want to be used by God enough to tithe in hard financial times. Do you want to be used by God more than you want to make up excuses? Do you want to be used by God more than sleeping in and skipping your quiet time.

Sure you want the supernatural, You want to be the next Miracle working super prophetic hyper faith healing walk on water raise the dead evangelistic prophet of GAWD. 

But it’s your character and your integrity that really matters. the gifts are without repentance… you get them, you get to use them and develop them… but they mean nothing without character. Are you going to stay married, stay faithful, be a loving and caring Father who is there for their kids. You want to be the next Joyce Meyers, the next Lauren Dagel - God wants to know if you can still care and love your husband even when he is a butthead… or worse yet he’s not the spiritual deep thinking Man of faith that he should be… well a real woman of God still loves him, makes love to him and loves taking care of him…oh is that maybe a little tooo spiritual for you?

 

Its not a skill level - its a will level! Will you Serve God in ALL areas of your life… that is character! 

 

Character is like this… if you tell me the truth all the time, I can trust you all the time. /but if you only tell me the truth some of the time then I can only trust you some of the… NEVER, I can never trust you - because you don’t have character.

 

 

   - 2 To be great you must know how to lead people and Leading people is more difficult than learning sign language in mandarin 

 

Here is another secret. you must learn to lead yourself in order to best lead people. But once you get that down, leading people is still hard. But its a must if you want to be used mightily by God. Name one person in scripture who was used by God in mighty ways who didn’t have to lead people. EVEN JESUS who could do anything had to lead people… and it wasn’t easy with the disciples he chose. 

Not everyone is going to follow - lead anyway

others could lead better - lead anyway

You won’t always know what to do- lead anyway

You will make mistakes leading - lead anyway

It will drain you - lead anyway

People will tear at your reputation and choices- lead anyway

No one will every truly appreciate your sacrifice or wins- LA

Leadership will leave you lonely - lead anyway

How do you lead? Start first by leading yourself in every area of you life. Look I admire the guy who is greatly used by God, but if he is grossly over weight and out of shape… I will probably be around longer and ultimately do more. Truth hurts, but its the truth. You gotta lead yourself emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually…

How do you lead? Well just like any other skill, read books, attend seminars and conferences but the key is to be around other leaders. Sometimes things are better caught then taught and leadership is one of them.

Finally have a key leader that you can turn to and run things by, debrief and even ask them to question everything about your leadership… your intentions, your choices, your habits, your tone of voice, your example… everything. 

You can be Godly, but if you can’t lead, you will Godly with little affect.

Parents should be on Alert Part 1

In light of our upcoming conference I am going to give you a sneak peek of some of the things we will be covering. So here is a 5 part series, one point each day over the next week 

 

 

5. The Attitude of Entitlement

Most of us had to work hard for what we have. And if we got in trouble growing up, our parents allowed us to face the consequences rather than rescuing us or blaming our authorities. Thats not the case anymore… talk to a teacher sometime and they will be quick to point out that parents today blame the school, the teacher, the other kids, and the principal etc… but never blame their kids. It’s not their fault that they are lazy and fail and get kicked out of class. 

 

I thought that people were supposed to be dependable, responsible, respectful, hardworking and disciplined. However, one of the great threats to kids today is the mindset that the world owes them something. A recent survey of school counselors said “entitlement mentality” is one of the top five problems young people have today.

 

now Listen to this and understand that it is from an article written in 2011 Thats 11 years ago. 

Children in the most recent generation of adults born between 1982 and 1995, known as “Generation Y,” were raised to believe that it is their right to have everything given to them more than any other previous generation. Between 1979 and 1984, the Public Relations Society of America conducted a series of surveys on the American public to determine whether or not there was a growing trend of entitlement being spread throughout popular opinion. The results showed that indeed a trend had sprouted within society that more and more citizens were beginning to expect institutions to provide for them rather than providing for themselves. The reports detailed that “expectations beginning to surface at the time might have a moderating influence on entitlement attitudes [in the future].” This was a scary idea for the American people (Detweiler, 1986).

 

So do you think things have gotten better? Ha! My grandson just got a participation trophy, I will break it to him that it means nothing… but he will know he is loved and he will learn that things that get done, people that change history, individuals who are successful are graded, judged and held accountable. 

 

With these threats and others facing our children, what is a parent to do? Well, act now 

 

They should have an allowance tied to responsibilities.

You don’t just get an allowance, you get an allowance for doing your job. I understood at an early age my Dad and Mom had to pay the house payment, the car payment, the grocery bill etc… and they would tell me how much it was… they explained to me my job was to pay the garbage bill which was take the garbage out on Mondays, pay the car vacuum bill which was wash and vacuum the car, pay the clean room bill… ok, i think you get it. But I didn’t just get an allowance for being their son… there was no participation allowance. 

 

Teach them how to save and spend.

They should have a job in high school and again buy some of their own things. My parents when I was growing up would match everything I saved in the bank… why? They wanted me to learn to save more than $50 at a time and wanted me to start to understand compound interest. Yes, it was way beyond normal compound interest, but as a teenager it still made sense to me and I got it. In fact I don’t think I would have ever learned to save hundreds of dollars unless my parents matched it… it worked. 

 

last but not least…Purposefully talk with your children about these issues and the threats they pose. Ask them, do you know of friends or kids at school that have this mindset? Do you think it will help or hinder them in the future? Next ask them to do a little research on great people of success and find out if they had a mindset of entitlement? They will quickly find out that most had just the opposite and had the mindset of “responsibility to the highest degree”. 

 

Now is the time to pray for God’s guidance to wisely navigate these threats that your children are sure to face.

3. The Ease of Access to Pornography

Growing up, we might have had a few inappropriate pictures hidden under our mattresses, but porn isn’t hidden today. Soft porn is flaunted as socially acceptable and hard-core porn is more accessible than ever. The average child’s first exposure to porn happens between 8 and 11 years old. We must take this seriously and put protective measures in place. This threat hit close to home for us recently, as one of our boys picked up someone else’s device and inadvertently was exposed to pornography.

 

The affects were first warned to parents regarding their boys. But in todays world porn is addictive and harmful to girls as it is boys.

It is becoming more and more common to have girls as early as middle school sext boys about how masculinity has to do with size, the ability to perform, your body shape, muscularity etc…

Girls tend to stumble on to porn and the curiosity gets the best of them and quickly it becomes addictive due to the fantasy nature of it… rationality goes out the window and reward and risk become their own mental romance novel.

Boys get addicted to it for many reasons, but pure pleasure, dopamine and control are on the leader board.

 

Porn simply destroys the nature of human relationships by making people objects. Simply there to fulfill my wants.

Sexual talk, perverse expectations and pushing the envelope to more extreme sexual behavior becomes the norm. And now it becomes all about consumption and not connection. Porn wants more… and when it gets more, it wants even more and in time it wants even more, then some more and then more. It is voracious it is never satisfied and when your teen becomes addicted to it, they crush their self esteem, they no longer feel comfortable talking to the opposite sex.

 

To an enslaved brain, porn addiction becomes as basic a need as food and water, even all the while shutting down healthy behavior and sucking the life out of healthy relationships.

But why? Simply put just like yesterdays podcast, they want to own their consumer early on and get them addicted so that they can make money off of them and control them.

Bottom line, porn, sexual content, movies etc… they depict sex in a way where the human brain is rehearsing what sex is supposed to be. Their expectations become norms. It is not natural and it is not healthy and more importantly it is not Godly. Thus they are creating a greater and greater hole and void in their lives, minds, psyche and spirits.

The Relational Challenges Associated with Social Media

 

Parents need to decide carefully if, when, and how they will allow their children to participate in social media. 

According to the Pew Research Center, most parents (45%) think it's acceptable for kids to have a phone between the ages of 12 and 14. 

About 28% of parents wait until ages 15 to 17, 

and 16% think it's fine to let kids as young as 9 have their own phones.

But here is the kicker - of 12 year old’s with a phone, 50% start social media pages like Facebook, Instagram and Tik tok. 

 

Did you know that even Bill Gates did not let any of his kids have phones until age 14.

 

One of the major problems with phones, social media etc.. is that it trains our childrens brains to be interrupted and to interrupt. Chain of command in due brain processing becomes altered for life. Teenagers cannot stay focused because they can’t. I mean their brains have literally lost much of that ability. The long term repercussions of this have yet to be fully understood or felt… but it can’t be good. 

 

Yeah it can help in some ways to build relationships, but it also can be a trap, drawing them into unhealthy habits of drama, poor self-image, the need for approval from others, cyberbullying, and many other threats.

 

Did you know that when a kid is cyberbullied they are 11.5 times more likely to think of and idealize suicide? 

 

I love the story of the father who saw on his daughters phone that a boy in school said send me a bra pic… also known as a titpic. The Dad took out his wife’s bra, put it on, put his 9mm Barretta in the cleavage and took a picture and sent it to him… captioned “now my dad wants one from you”. Love it! 

You have heard the saying “Barbarians are at the gate? Well they are actually at the keypad - and they are merciless.

We covered self esteem yesterday, but lets not forget that many times self esteem shots come from so called friends at school who are quick to point out you have flawed sizes and shapes of body parts, that you are stupid and that you really have no friends.

 

Children may be exposed to:

• Violence and risk-taking behaviors
• Videos of stunts or challenges that may inspire unsafe behavior
• Sexual content
• Negative stereotypes
• Substance use
• Cyberbullies and predators
• Advertising aimed at your child
• Misleading or inaccurate information

Too much screen time may lead to:

• Sleep problems
• Lower grades in school
• Reading fewer books
• Less time with family and friends
• Not enough outdoor or physical activity
• Weight problems
• Mood problems
• Poor self-image and body image issues
• Fear of missing out
• Less time learning other ways to relax and have fun

 

Here is the real overall problem when we are talking about relationships and technology. It stifles the teens relationship with themselves. They never find out who they really are due to all the comparisons. They are too busy looking at the phone trying to figure out who they are rather than being molded by a God centered home, Godly parents and their own devotional time.

When you kid dies, he is not going to be asked why they weren’t more like the social media influencer who has 3 million followers… rather they are going to be asked “why didn’t you become who I created you to be”.

Don’t let the media create your child or their future.

1. The Saturation of Media and Technology

Most of our children don’t know of a pre-iPhone world. And while this comes with advantages, it comes with even more concerns. Never before have kids spent as much time in front of screens or had as much access to the entire world at their fingertips. The average time on the phone for a teenager is 9 hours a day… what the Phone?

Let me read you something: Dancing in the Dark

From the 1950's to the present, the media have continuously reformulated the youth culture according to the latest trends in clothing, language, leisure activities, technology, and especially electronic media consumption, which has added to its own influence. The entertainment industry has attempted to read the tea leaves of social and cultural change in order to capitalize on the hungers and discontents of youth. Its sense of nascent trends has dictated its investment in a potential box-office smash, a promising radio format, a likely high-rated broadcast or cable-TV show, and a probable gold recording. In the dynamic interplay between the entertainment industry and youth, the media have learned how to appeal to young consumers, and in turn, American youth have learned how to live a hyped-up, Hollywood version of teen life.

This is talking about the 1950’s on up… not just today! 

 

It’s ultimately about owning your kids so they can make money off of them. But in the meantime… these dangers persist… actually are rampant due to the media’s influence. So what are the consequences? 

 

 

The threats created range from (here are 4) 

laziness - I don’t have to study I can google, I don’t have to work I can just build a social media following, I don’t have to go to my friends I can just face time them, 

Did you know that teenagers today are only as active as those over 65…. Hello? That is not a compliment. 

And now we have renamed it… its not called lazy…It is now called a physical dysfunction… no you are just lazy. 

 

Obesity, - Our nation is sick for one major reason. We eat too much. PERIOD. More than any other symptom of technology is that it makes us sedentary… We lack movement and we overeat. Put the phones down and run. There was a father I read about who had his kids earn electricity to charge their phones by riding on a bike… a little extreme, but not a bad idea. Let me shoot straight - your kid is fat and getting fatter!

 

Worldview implications - I never heard of being Gay until I was in Middle school. And even then I never had to choose or even think about wether I was gay or not until someone challenged my beliefs in College. Today kids at the age of 5 are being TOLD they are gay, lesbian, transgender, bi…. our God view is challenged daily by the worldview media shoves down our throat. How many parents were not ready for the conversation about sex… but now its about sex with the same sex, or even being nonsexual, binary etc…

 

Low self-esteem.

Look your kid already has a hard time fitting in and feeling like they are good enough. It is all a part of normal adolescent development and Even if you are an amazing parent and you love your kid emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually- they are still being told everyday they do not measure up. Media tells your kids how bad they are or how great they are… Jesus simply tells them who they are. 

look girls have it the hardest, they are told to be sweet, kind, hot, sexy, smart, athletic, innocent, worldly… Did you know A psychological study in 1995 found that three minutes spent looking at a fashion magazine caused 70% of girls to feel depressed, guilty, and shameful. What do you think those numbers are today in light of that little phone in your daughters hands.
