III. REPENT
I JOHN 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
Confession and repentance of sin are a constant mark of the person walking in the light of fellowship with God.
When someone begins to talk about repentance we always have
a little lawyer who steps out into our mind and says,
“I OBJECT… MY CLIENT ISN’T SO BAD –
WHY LOOK AT HIM/HER OR THEM”.
He immediately begins to rationalize and defend our actions.
But if we truly want all God has for us we must be willing to ask God to search us and tell us where we are truly at.
Repentance The Romans sometimes compelled a captive to be joined face-to-face with a dead body, and to bear it about until the horrible effluvia destroyed the life of the living victim. Virgil describes this cruel punishment: 'The living and the dead at his command Were coupled face to face, and hand to hand; Till choked with stench, in loathed embraces tied, The lingering wretches pined away and died. Without Christ, we are shackled to a dead corpse -- our sinfulness. Only repentance frees us from certain death, for life and death cannot coexist indefinitely. I. YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR FIRST LOVE – for one another and for Christ

Paul had once commended the church at Ephesus for its love for God and others (Ephesians 1:15),
EPH 1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
Why did they lose their zeal for God?but many of the church founders had died, and many of the second-generation believers had lost their zeal for God.
They were a busy church—
the members did much to benefit themselves and the community—but they were acting out of the wrong motives. Work for God must be motivated by love for God, or it will not last.

II. REMEMBER
Remember what new love is like?
Remember how in love you used to be?
Are you as in love with Jesus as you once were?
Just as when a man and woman fall in love, so also new believers rejoice at their newfound forgiveness. But when we lose sight of the seriousness of sin, we begin to lose the thrill of our forgiveness (see 2 Peter 1:9).
I Peter 1:9 But those who fail to develop these virtues are blind or, at least, very shortsighted. They have already forgotten that God has cleansed them from their old life of sin.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE IN LOVE HEAD OVER HEELS FOR JESUS?
What were you like?
What did you think about?
What were your spiritual disciplines?
Who were your friends?
What was your conversation like?
Mother Theresa was once being followed by a reporter who was doing a story on her. Mother Theresa was more then happy to let the young woman follow her, she was hoping that the coverage would help bring attention to the needs in India! One day the woman was standing on the street corner watching Mother Theresa clean a beggar dieing with AIDS. The reporter was taking pictures and becoming nauseous at the site. She quietly whispered “you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do that”. Mother Theresa without looking up said “you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to do this either!”
Our faith must go beyond what we believe; it must become a dynamic part of all we do, resulting in good fruit and spiritual maturity. Salvation does not depend on good deeds, but it results in good deeds. A person who claims to be saved while remaining unchanged does not understand faith or what God has done for him or her.
Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
In the first steps of your Christian life, you may have had enthusiasm without knowledge.
Do you now have knowledge without enthusiasm? Both are necessary if we are to keep love for God intense and untarnished (see Hebrews 10:32, 35). Do you love God with the same fervor as when you were a new Christian?
Heb.10:32 Don’t ever forget those early days when you first learned about Christ. Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering. 33Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others who were suffering the same things. 34You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail. When all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew you had better things waiting for you in eternity.
35 Do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord, no matter what happens. Remember the great reward it brings you! 36Patient endurance is what you need now, so you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Many times in our lives its not blatant sin that messes us up… but rather certain things that cripple us. We don’t realize it, but we limp in certain areas of our life, we are stunted in others.
These 3 things can cause us to be crippled.
- Disappointment
- Resentment
- Fear of man
Why or how does this happen… well
The truth is only God can create… because satan can’t create he cripples. By that I mean he distorts us, our gifts, how we see ourselves and our weaknesses and others.
Many times the deception is carried further by giving the crippling affect some type of a virtuous name.
This is where the real twisted works of the enemy throw us off our game. We legitimize it or increase its power in our life but defining a crippling defect as a “way of life” or even a positive in our lives.
When we are angry we say things like I can’t stand injustice… no you are just a hothead.
We strike out at others and say “well I tend to overprotect the ones I love”.
Here is a good one… well yes I struggle with porn, but its better than having a real life affair.
Hey skippy- not in the eyes of God. but anyway…
To make things worse (can they get worse? yep!) The fear of man creates an unusual appetite for approval of man.
You see it easier to accept the approval of man then to put in the hard work of accepting God and his redemptive work. We don’t like to admit it, but it is work to serve God, and work is sometimes hard.
So in the end we have our pet sins, we don’t want the world to hate us, or think we are weird or out of touch so we rename them or excuse them and we walk around stunted in our Christian faith.
If you came to my house and I had poisonous snakes all over and my family and grandkids were always getting bit, and in turn getting tragically sick and some even dying… you would call me out on it- right? How stupid would I sound if I said well they are not snakes, they are actually slip and slides and they help keep the mice away.
Call it what you will, but you have crippled not only you but your family.
As my grandpa used to say “you can paint a pig whatever color you want… but it’s still a pig”.

Why Don’t we pray?
A - Feelings
Sometimes we just don’t pray because we just don’t feel like they make any difference. What if i used that excuse in any other relationship…
*I would talk to my wife except it never works… I never get what I want. It is the wrong premise… We should want to talk to our spouse to build a relationship.
I don’t feel like praying… talk to God about it
I don’t think God hears me… talk to God about it
I don’t want to pray… talk to God about it
God never answers my prayers… talk to God about it
I don’t know what to pray… talk to God about it
REMEMBER: God did not recognize the problem (the storm) he recognized the voice calling out to him.
Matthew 8:23-27
The disciples felt like their lives were over… God did not go by feelings, he went by their request. In the same way we should not let our feelings dictate our prayer life, but rather see our prayer life as what it is supposed to be…. a way to connect to God.
B - Jesus waited for the disciples to ask him how to pray before he taught them to pray…
What does this say?
- Maybe he wanted them to get hungry to for prayer first
- Maybe they saw his prayer life take up so much time of his life
- Maybe they were afraid up to this point
*I think it was that at this point the disciples saw that the fruit of his life (ability to teach and blow the minds of people, the ability to heal, raise the dead, the ability to profound the religious teachers, the ability to read minds, have compassion, love his enemies etc…) they came to a point to understanding that it was from his prayer life.
C — Motives
Fundamental question: do you want prayer to know me, or do you want prayer just to get answers.
D - I don’t have time - than you don’t understand how important it is.
A day without prayer is a boast against God.
Prayer is the language of weakness - We need God!
Final thought on this intro:
We are wired in our DNA to pray. I don’t care who you are you pray and want to connect with God. You may pray to another God, or even if you are atheist you may pray to your own philosophy (or pray to God by telling him you don’t believe in him) - but we all want to pray, need to pray and believe in prayer.
Why do we all still have a desire to pray?
We want to crossover into the realm of faith…
Prayer is the stepping into the invisible, the supernatural!

Prayer is not talking to God… it is communicating to God.
How many of you have a spouse who “talks to you” but does not communicate with you?
There are lots of things to look for in communication.
The changing of the subjects
The stare
The rolling of the eyes,
The folding of the hands
The louder voice
The softer voice
The tapping of the finger
2 men talking about religion… the one man challenged the other man “I bet you don’t even know the Lords prayer”.
I sure do
“oh yea, I bet you $20 bucks you don’t”.
The man said “deal”. He cleared his throat and started his prayer “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, if I die before I wake, I pray to God the my soul he take”.
The other man laughed and said “You got me” and paid him $20.
What does the Bible say about prayer?
#1 It is not religious
Matthew 6:7
I chatter, am long-winded, utter empty vain words, stammer, repeat.
If wouldn’t talk to your kids, spouse or boss like you talk to God you are doing it wrong.
#2 it is focused
James 5:16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
Earnest prayer GK = Focused, specific and energetic.
How many of you have a prayer time the same way you sing songs on the radio…

YOU START TO PRAY AND THEN JUST WANDER OFF.
#3 Prayer is communicating with God - but it is still a legal activity!
Prayer = Petition
Prayer is a legal activity.
You make a demand upon an authority based on legal right.
*Petition is has 3 parts:
authority,
document
and right relationship.
Right relationship is one in good standing.
Psalm 66:18 if I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.
If I know of wickedness, trouble or sorrow in my heart (mind, body soul heart) the Lord will not hear (to much static on the line, chatter)
So what to do? We all have sin - right?
SHOULD WE JUST GIVE UP PRAYING?
The insight is in Matthew 5: 5 and when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 6But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Hypocrite - to wear a mask.
If you do not come to God in honesty, in who you are…
“God I come to you as a sinner, saved by your grace… I repent of my sin, help keep me in your perfect will”
NOW PRAY….
No mask in front of others or God

Timing is everything.
You want to bake a cake… here are the ingredients.
2 sticks of unsalted butter
3 cups of all purpose flour
1 table spoon of baking powder
1/2 tsp. of salt
1 1/4 cup of sugar
4 large eggs
1 table spoon of vanilla extract
1 1/4 cup of whole milk or heavy cream
1/2 cup of water
bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees
This is for a basic vanilla cake… no frills, so surprises.
But you come over… and even if I am the best baker in town or the country… you think I can make it immediately because you are in a hurry.
So I say ok, open up. And I start putting ingredients in your mouth… here salt and sugar and flour.. chew this up… now swallow it so I can put some eggs in your mouth.
It doesn’t work that way… not to mention you have to mix it all together and then put it in a hot oven - and you still have to wait… and even after taking it out of the oven the directions say to wait 10 more minutes….
So you want a great life… you seem to have some pretty good ingredients, sugar, milk, cream…
but you also have some boring ingredients in your life… flour, vanilla, water…
And then you have some disgusting ingredients in your life, eggs, salt, raw butter,
How can your life with so many variables end up being good, or even great.
Well… let God do what he wants with your ingredients, let him mix them, let him take the mediocre, the bland, the good the bad etc… and give him time.
You know the greatest mindset in the bible to me was that of Joseph. he was given an incredible dream that some day he would rule the then known world. Here he is just a kid telling his brothers this dream and they are so put off by him and so worn down by his dreams (almost arrogance) they pretend to kill him and sell him off as a slave. He literally goes through hell and back. He has every ingredient in his life, he is sold into slavery, he is one who has found favor, he is accused of rape, he is locked up in jail, he is forgotten about by friends, he serves at the Kings court, he is given power like no other man, he is missing his family… he finally reunites with his family… at the end of this saga, the recipe for a beautiful rich life… with all it’s ups and downs and all its turns… he says the most amazing thing. What you meant for bad, God meant for good.
Joseph is admitting that he knew it would take time, that lots of bad things happened but he still trusted God through all of it.
What if he had given up half way through… what if he said well this is as good as its going to get so I will shag Potiphers wife and get what I can… god has given up on me, so why should I care!
I know men who would do that… unfortunately I know men who have done that.
Where are you right now in life… are you at the sugar stage? The egg stage? The salt stage? The flour stage? Maybe you have made it to the oven… hang on, What has happened in your life- if you still serve God will be used for good.
Let the cake begin!

Negative early life conditioning.
The website the mental guru states this about mental conditioning:
Mental conditioning is a powerful method of training your mind to work in a certain way which is advantageous to you. ... Imagery training develops and strengthens your belief about being capable of achieving your goals. It allows you to create a mindset that no matter what, your dreams will come true.
Proverbs 22:
5Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse; he who guards his soul stays far from them. 6Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. 7The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.…
8He who sows injustice will reap disaster, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed.…
V. 5 Perverse = twisted, a generation that is twisted over time.
V. 5 Gaurds = Keeping charge of a garden, watching over the growth of plants.
V. 6 Train up = each child has a certain bend like each plant has different unique needs.
NOW HERE IS THE KICKER IF YOU DON’T DO THIS… we now see what happens in a persons life.
They are ruled over, they are oppressed, they are slaves to a bad job, a bad boss, they will get taken advantage of, their anger will lead them to despair.
so back to our original thought: negative early childhood conditioning… has had what impact on your life?
Now the good news - We can recondition our lives, our minds and our hearts.
How?
Through Gods word.
Be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds,
Not habits, not friends, not church attendance, not discipline… but by simply renewing your mind with scripture.
I will let you in on a little secret I do… I have one go to verse that I consistently think on and act on. It is this: James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
This helps me in 2 direct ways: one, I have to pause and ask God… time to reflect and wait. Secondly I have to listen. If he freely and generously gives wisdom than I want to hear it when he speaks.
But more importantly he typically speaks and backs it up with his word. I daily put his word into my heart. His word is a light unto my path.
This simple little step keeps me from immediately falling back into my early negative childhood conditioning. It allows me the space to connect with God and not my own natural tendencies.

WHAT ARE YOU FIGHTING FOR
Impatience
(31 August 1995, Egypt) Six people drowned Monday while trying to rescue a chicken that had fallen into a well in southern Egypt. An 18 year old farmer was the first to descend into the 60-foot well. He drowned, apparently after an undercurrent in the water pulled him down, police said his sister and two brothers, none of whom could swim well, went in one by one to help him, but also drowned. Two elderly farmers then came to help. But they apparently were pulled by the same undercurrent. The bodies of the six were later pulled out of the well in the village of Nazlat Imara, 240 miles south of Cairo. The chicken was also pulled out. It survived.
What are you putting so much time and effort into? And why?
I think of it like this… what is YOUR job description…
Your job description is what you have chose to fight over every day….
not the one your boss gave you, or the company or the description they handed you on a piece of paper. But what is YOUR job description. The one YOU gave yourself for your life.
You have a life
You get to create your own job description
Now what is it?
So many of us are fighting for, and living for something that is meaningless and simply leads to dead works. Rather than a job description that leads to life and eternal works.
So I am a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ. A Christ follower, a man of God… right? Ok, so now what is my job description that I am giving myself according to what I see in scripture.
Here I will take a shot at it:
Daily seek God through his scriptures. Spend quality time praying building a deeper relationship with him. Choosing to listen to the Holy Spirit to speak to me daily as to what, who, how, when and why. Daily find people to share Christ with, pray for, give to. Seek to Make God look good in every and all things.
FOR ME- thats about it.

Ever see that child who when he came home you could tell who he was with because he was now trying to imitate them. Even if he didn’t know it consciously it just happened naturally…. Everyone is imitating someone.

11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
IMITATE Gk = high level of self interest… It captures your attention on a regular basis.
Evil GK = what has morally spoiled, it was good but now it has rotted. Sex is good, but the world has spoiled it… made it evil, vile, perverse.
It has made sex so that it appeals specifically to our sin nature.
When was the last time you saw anything on social media that has made a Godly marriage desirable? its rare indeed.
Good Gk = its good wether or not you can see it. It’s good because God calls it good… its of his character. It is also from God and emanates in power inside of you because of Gods power. Understand? its good, but it we don’t activate it to its fullest until God empowers it in us.
Example: we can be generous and giving, but when it is empowered by God we are used in more supernatural ways.
In the natural you can give money to a single mom in need.That is good.
In the Supernatural you may be told to give money to a young girl who looks like she has it all together. But you find out later she is thinking of going into the call girl profession to make some money to put food on the table for her kid. Now not only do you not konw this, but it also speaks to this woman that God is watching her… and you reap a greater reward to your obedience in this act of giving.
Basically its good on steroids.
Does not see God Gk = experience God.
John was Jesus favorite disciple. In fact John himself acknowledges this and says he is the favored disciple.
John is now at the end of his life… so in this letter he gets a little personal and less general.
There is a guy in the church who is sinning and John calls him out!
He is basically challenging his readers with this thought. Who are you imitating?
We imitate one of three things or a little of all…
- Gods perspective of who we are
- Our perspective of who we think we are
c. Others perspective of who they say we are
