37 years of marriage and a total of 40 years together. It was not always easy… hey she married me right?
We have been through massive challenges with adjusting to family history, expectations, money problems even bankruptcy, cancers, broken necks and paralysis, brain tumors, deaths in our immediate families- tragic horrendous deaths, major dealings with our boys, even dealing with jail and police calls and more… drug addiction, health scares with our grandkids, being fired from a church, changing jobs… look life is not easy for anyone - please don’t think it has been easy for us to stay married because we had an easy life. Far from it!
But what have I learned… well relying on Jesus alone, has not been enough. Now you might say… what? But I mean I have to do the work. Like Paul says “Faith without works is dead”. Your marriage is dead in the water… bloating, floating and stinking up the place if you are not willing to work on your marriage… how do you do that?
Well first work on yourself. By that I DON’T MEAN.. working on your physical body getting buff, nor do I mean working on your goals so you are more wealthy, faster car, bigger house, more toys etc… I don’t mean working on your skill set… you know be a better communicator, better boss, more skilled at a hobby or skill or talent…
NOPE NOPE NOPE
I mean working on you! How is your emotional ability to handle anger, conflict, surprises that are not fun.
How is your prayer life with Jesus? Are you more intimate? Does he speak more clearly to you. Are you more obedient?
Do you know your weaknesses better? Are you more accountable to those weaknesses? Do you have others in your life that keep you accountable at being a better husband and father?
Have you taken steps to care for your spouse better emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually?
Can you honestly say you are glad you are not as immature and selfish as you were 5 years ago? 10 years ago? 20 years ago? 35 years ago?
The truth is, the better YOU version you become as a servant, humble, loving, giving the better a spouse you become.
You can have it all, have it made, have it together and still be the worst spouse in the world. If all you live for is to please yourself and gratify yourself- life pretty simple and you don’t really have to grow much. oh you may have to learn new skills, and persevere and push through for your goals… but you can still be a turd to be married to - and that goes for men and women.
You see as a pastor and a counselor everyone talks about what it takes to have a great marriage, or what are the tools, or HOW to have a great marriage.
The truth is no one has a great marriage all the time…
You just choose not to bail
You choose to work on you more than your marriage
You choose to not keep track of others wrongs, but rather your wrongs and your attitude crap and you go to God with it.
Look I found the greatest house in the world. it is absolutely fantastic. it is in Hawaii on the ocean, deep green rich landscape, beautiful vegetation, the sea life and the animals.. it is paradise. Plus the weather and views of the ocean… I cannot believe I landed this house… but there is a problem… sometimes the weather gets bad… and you never know when. There have been times where it has ruined some of the vegetation and even done damage to the house… sometimes it gets so hot that the air conditioner doesn’t even help. And there have been a few times where I have gotten stung by jellyfish in the ocean… and rumor has it there are even sharks out there.
… So I am going to move. Everyone else seems to have a great house and they are not affected by what I am. So I will go find another geographical place to live with a house that is not affected by weather and the outside elements.
Look do you get what I am saying? When I picked out my wife and she said yes… I would have been a fool to think that we would never have problems, issues, heartaches, disagreements and all out fights… but if I work on me and not just move- I can live there for ever.
Working on your marriage is overrated…work on yourself and watch the magic happen!

So how do we recover from the fall?
To the church of Ephesus
Rev. 2:4-5 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
I. REMEMBER
Remember what new love is like?
Remember how in love you used to be?
Are you as in love with Jesus as you once were?
Just as when a man and woman fall in love, so also new believers rejoice at their newfound forgiveness. But when we lose sight of the seriousness of sin, we begin to lose the thrill of our forgiveness (see 2 Peter 1:9).
I Peter 1:9 But those who fail to develop these virtues are blind or, at least, very shortsighted. They have already forgotten that God has cleansed them from their old life of sin.
II. REPENT
I JOHN 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.
Mathew 6 The Lords prayer
Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors….
Confession and repentance of sin are a constant mark of the person walking in the light of fellowship with God.
III. REPEAT
IF A FRIEND ASKED YOU WHAT THEY SHOULD DO TO GET THE FIRE BACK IN THEIR LIFE - WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO DO? - You would probably tell them to do what you used to do when you were on fire for God.
Jesus does not say to read your bible more, go to church more, give more, sacrifice more, serve more… AND THOSE MIGHT BE A PART OF WHAT YOU REPEAT - But the point he makes is go back to being obedient to the voice of God - like you were when you first believed.

Romans 1:18-31
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth (Kahteko - hold back the truth, You know it, you just simply choose not to live it anymore) in unrighteousness OR WICKEDNESS (Adakia - not living in Gods way in heart or life), 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.
Warning signs that you might start to wane in your walk:
Lack of joy
Feel like your Xn walk is based solely on discipline
Lack of compassion for the lost
Misplaced anger towards God

I have quoted this for a long time… the best thing to ever happen to David was Goliath… David chose to fight an impossible battle… except God stepped in.
in this story When David chose not to fight… it was him choosing to lose the ultimate battle.
Even though the prophet Nathaniel comes and rebukes him… he still sowed destruction into his family… and his family was never without strife or division from that day forward.

WE BETTER BE WILLING TO FIGHT FOR OUR KIDS.
It is hard and painful and tiring to keep taking a stand for Jesus in this world… but we must choose to seek Gods purpose over peace with mankind.

Lawlessness - utter disregard of Gods law, written and living word
I still have a love… but it no longer has the power to do what it is supposed to do.
*Its like being cold and someone hands you a blanket that is frozen in ice… You can argue with me all day long that it is a blanket and it has kept you warm, and it is supposed to keep you warm… but it won’t keep your warm.

I grew up with a razor sharp tongue, sarcastic to the core. You could not stick with me when it came to cutdowns or defending yourself. If social media would have been around when I was in Middle school or high school… it would have been magic and tragic… but not anymore… so what changed?
So where it todays podcast coming from? I made 2 posts this last week on the Roe vs. Wade decision and the world blew up at me. LOL what is truly funny, and I mean it when I say this - I was laughing because most of the haters were my own cousins and nephews and nieces etc…
But I am used to this. I honestly don’t try to post things that are flagrant… because I really want to always keep an open door to the thousands of my followers on Social media about Jesus… but anyway. It has happened time and time again and what amazes me most is that people will message me privately and ask “why don’t you hit back? I know you can put them in their place - why do you just sit silently and let them rail on you”.
Honestly…. Its love.
Prov. 12:16 Fools show their annoyance at once,
but the prudent overlook an insult.
Captious : marked by an often ill-natured inclination to stress faults and raise petty objections, Major on the minor to mark overblown criticisms: calculated to confuse, entrap, or entangle in argument
Prov. 18:2 Fools find no pleasure in understanding
but delight in airing their own opinions.
2 Cor. 11:19 For you, being so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly.
What do you do when people attack you. Snide, harsh remarks, untrue general statements or even blatant lies stated as facts about you as a whole.
Stop and ask yourself why?
People attack out of anger stemming from wounds. What has happened to them that they feel the need to use a platform pretending to stand up for that issue only to use it as a way to attack you. You know the kind right? (stupid example)
I love meat, and you gotta kill cows to eat meat.
And then the comments role in…
Did you know that 6 people die a year in farming accidents, and over 40 people die a year in meat plants and more then 100 people lose a finger in butcher shops a year. How can you be so cold hearted… you just want to fill your stomach and your wants over Gods given creatures of this world. You call yourself a Christian.
AND THEN SOMEONE CHIMES IN: Well he lifts weights and they think they need red meat for proper protein… we all know weightlifters are not the brightest in the world….
So I stop and ask myself… how hurt must you feel to attack someone else. How much have you been disappointed, poisoned or just unhappy with life.
2 Cor. 11:19 For you, being so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly.
This is Paul being very facetious even sarcastic about how people who attack others also defend other fools who attack them.
Rather Scripture is clear that we are to bless those who curse us. Luke 6:28 bless those who curse you
Rom. 12:14 bless those who persecute you
Just remember love always wins… you don’t have to defend yourself. Jesus didn’t, He was silent among his accusers. Just love.
The donkey told the tiger, "The grass is blue."
The tiger replied, "No, the grass is green ."
The discussion became heated, and the two decided to submit the issue to arbitration, so they approached the lion.
As they approached the lion on his throne, the donkey started screaming: ′′Your Highness, isn't it true that the grass is blue?"
The lion replied: "If you believe it is true, the grass is blue."
The donkey rushed forward and continued: ′′The tiger disagrees with me, contradicts me and annoys me. Please punish him."
The king then declared: ′′The tiger will be punished with 3 days of silence."
The donkey jumped with joy and went on his way, content and repeating ′′The grass is blue, the grass is blue..."
The tiger asked the lion, "Your Majesty, why have you punished me, after all, the grass is green?"
The lion replied, ′′You've known and seen the grass is green."
The tiger asked, ′′So why do you punish me?"
The lion replied, "That has nothing to do with the question of whether the grass is blue or green. The punishment is because it is degrading for a brave, intelligent creature like you to waste time arguing with an ass, and on top of that, you came and bothered me with that question just to validate something you already knew was true!”
The biggest waste of time is arguing with the fool and fanatic who doesn't care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions. Never waste time on discussions that make no sense. There are people who, for all the evidence presented to them, do not have the ability to understand. Others who are blinded by ego, hatred and resentment, and the only thing that they want is to be right even if they aren’t.
When IGNORANCE SCREAMS, intelligence moves on.
And Jesus calls us to choose love!

Robin Sharma a few months back shot out an email about taking careful analysis of our talent and how to keep an eye out for things that may rob it. It got me thinking about how our spiritual lives can erode over time and become less effective or on fire for God… And its tricky because we can become more fervent for the things of God and less on fire for God - yea thats right, we can become more in love with Gods attributes than with God himself. Or we can become more in love with his… shall we say “causes” then again with God himself. So I wanted to take a look at these 7 things Robin shared but in a spiritual light.
7 Threats to world class performance and success
The threat of talent erosion
The threat of energetic diversion
The threat of lifestyle complexity
The threat of success fed hubris
The threat of reaching good enough
The threat of reputation deterioration
The threat of human mortality
Now lets look at them if we were talking about threats to our Spiritual walk with God.
7 Threats to world class intimacy and power
The threat of talent erosion
If you quit pushing yourself to be used by God, you will lose that ability more and more. I have seen some pretty cool miracles in my life and from my hands… but still praying for some to come back to life, to have full health even though their body is wracked with cancer… I will not let my spiritual intimacy erode by lack of trying.
The threat of energetic diversion
If I focus my energy on other things, I will have little if any energy left for pursuing greater intimacy with God. When I was planting a church and having to work at a roofing company to pay the bills I knew that for the church to have the right foundation I had to keep my quiet time with Jesus #1, so I had to do it first thing in the morning at 5am.
The threat of lifestyle complexity
Don’t try to do everything, but rather find your gift, talent and abilities and focus growing spiritually in those. The more busy you are, the more hobbies you have the more you travel, speak, socialize etc… the more complex your life becomes. I am pretty simple - and I like that. Because I want to focus on Gods priorities first.
The threat of success fed hubris
How many big name pastors, or just pastors of successful churches have let their success eat them alive. Sex, money, arrogance, - you name it. My success is my greatest threat to my intimacy with Jesus. The sooner you understand that, the sooner you can keep it in check.
The threat of reaching good enough
You go to church more than most, you pray some times, you have read your bible and somewhat habitually - you even attend a bible study and are involved in a ministry… you are good… the problem is if you think you are good enough. Jesus said be ye perfect even as I am perfect…. uh, I guess there is room for growth.
The threat of reputation deterioration
Franklin D Roosevelt said “judge me by the enemies I have made”. You can lose your reputation to the world… thats ok. Jesus said “remember they will hate you, but they hated me first”.
But if you lose your reputation to the church… in time it will resonate so loudly that your walk will be hindered… and might I add I mean the church that still believes in the word of God and the power of his word and spirit. If you feel like people are starting to question your reputation… maybe check on your time with Jesus and your intimacy.
The threat of human mortality
We all get old. I am thankful after all this body has been through I still have lots of energy. I am up at 5am, I go to bed at 11 and I pretty much try to kill it every day. I eat right, I exercise daily, I drink coffee by the gallon… ok, Im not perfect. But I know now is the time to make hay, to do more for God…. because the truth is that I am getting older, I am getting slower, I am getting a little more dull mentally… it just happens. I can’t seek God if I am falling asleep during my quiet time. At the same time age is no excuse - push in and get older and bolder, not older and colder.
What was your GPA in high school and college? Whatever it was, you can’t change it now… but that doesn’t mean you still can’t get smarter, and more knowledgeable - now what is your GPA in your spiritual life? The goal is to be able to answer that honestly… every day and then push harder! (Garth Heckman)
