Every day the world is asking you if you are a coward. It asks you through your friendships your boss your problems your financial difficulties relationships even through your mood swings and your emotions. are you going to be a coward? Are you going to shrink back? Are you going to let fear motivate you?
If strength and courage does not answer the call then you live a life of regret and shame and self loathing. Not only that, but you become a miserable person to be around because you’re always captious in how you see others.
In my brief life here on earth there is no more miserable person to be around than someone who is insecure and lives in fear because of it. They constantly are trying to prove they are not fearful by picking on issues, they try to prove they are valuable and boost their self esteem by prancing around in their feeble and holier than thou attacks on others.
Here is the truth about those people who yell and scream the loudest and try to manipulate you and control you… they hate themselves. They fear what others think the most. And the fact that you don’t drives them nuts… they are thinking “hey you should bow to peer pressure just like I do… what makes you so special that you think you don’t have to fear peoples opinions like I do?”
The bible says fear not 365 times in the bible. One for each day… but we gotta have fear, its normal and without it we don’t have courage. No fear, no courage. There has to be a hill to climb in order to achieve a new height in life.
Let me explain in John
14:27
the word there for Fear is Day-Lee-ah-o
It means do not cower, to be timid, to shrink back.
Understand it this way… you are moving forward in an area of life. A goal, maybe actions based upon your beliefs, things you desire for your family… regardless you are moving in that direction daily. You have a plan and when things or people come against your beliefs, or goals or plans you are called to not be afraid - i.e. do not move backward, do not cower or shrink back from what you want or believe in.
So when you choose not to be afraid “again… shrink back” you are now exhibiting courage. You must be faced with the choice of fear or courage. You do not have to act on fear… you can feel fear and by not acting on it exhibit courage.
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Its interesting when you look at the word dismayed here in the hebrew… it literally means don’t lay down. We’ve heard that saying before right? What happened in the fight… oh well he just laid down.
Kaw-thath to be prostrate…
Don’t be the guy that folds.
When get asked this week if you are a coward… in any circumstance? Answer the call by not backing down… as Joshua 1:9 says “The Lord your God is with you… he is walking with you… so walk the talk and answer the call!

Just yesterday I had a couple who had been coming to my church the last 4 weeks reach out to me stating they wanted to meet with me one on one to ask me some questions. Well we started out with some fun banter, and a few social question and answer and then they went into their background One was Lutheran, one was Catholic, they had been married for 10 years and had been high school sweethearts. They were both looking for a church they could attend together and enjoy… but they had some questions to ask me before they become members. they loved the church, the music, they loved my preaching but needed clarification on some topics. So what where the topics… Abortion, Homosexuality, infant baptism and if I actually thought scripture was Gods holy word and was inherent.
So I told them what the bible said on each of these topics and with each answer they just stared, quietly… I pretty much figured they stumbled into this UMC thinking we were still UMC and we are not and now I burst their bubble with biblical answers… I even wondered if they had kids that were gay or cats… or whatever… but as it turns out when I was finished the woman sighed a sigh of relief and said that is soooo good to hear. We left our other churches because they don’t agree with scripture.
In todays world having a biblical opinion is not popular and in fact its not even popular with Christians. But I have learned something over the years…
When you truly want Jesus and all he has for you- when the hunger is so great that you beg God giving him permission to do whatever it takes to make you more like Jesus.. when that’s your pulse then you not only no longer have time for watered down scripture and perverted theology but it actually causes your soul and spirit to wretch - almost as if your soul is going to throw up. You become so hungry for God that your heart mind and soul demand the pure unadulterated word of God free from mans carnal consciousness and opinions.
We ended last weeks podcast with the verse in Galatians 1:17 (I believe) am I still trying to please man or am I trying to please God. You know It does not bother me when non Christians don’t believe what I believe. They are not supposed to… but when professing Christians speak the opposite of scripture… then I must call them out… Look
First they don’t understand you, then they don’t like you, but over time they respect you, and finally they want to be like you! (though they may never tell you) Not only is this true in the world of Christianity, but this is many times the road a person travels when they live truly according to Gods vision for their life.
ITS NUTS RIGHT? You choose Christ and his so called followers choose to hate you.
Have you ever heard of the Hate poem by Julie Sheehan?
I will read just a snippet of it.
The blue-green jewel of sock lint I’m digging
from under my third toenail, left foot, hates you.
The history of this keychain hates you.
My sigh in the background as you explain relational databases
hates you.
The goldfish of my genius hates you.
My aorta hates you. Also my ancestors.
A closed window is both a closed window and an obvious
symbol of how I hate you.
As one literary critic explains regarding this poem…
It isn’t until the end of the poem when we grasp the fact that this guy that she hates is her significant other. Then we realize that her “hatred” for her boyfriend or husband may be confused for love or has replaced love temporarily. “Hate Poem” is a deep and highly clever work of art that demonstrates the similarities between both the intense emotions of love and hate.
Understand in todays world more than ever… if someone hates you, it means they actually in a twisted way love you, they love that you stand for truth in the face of a world gone looney tunes… but hey express it as hate because they don’t have the backbone to stand up to others they way you do.
So enjoy the hate… your on to something great!

Have you ever heard of an NDE? What about an ESM?
They both are brutal and beautiful all at the same time.
Near death experience changed his life forever and his ultimate death.
ESM Eat Shit Moment… you are forced to go through something you would never choose for yourself. Cancer, divorce, a spouse having and affair, Child in prison,
They can change us. And I don’t just mean change us in ways that are outside of our control… but also You get to stop, take account, perceive into the future and realize you CAN rebuild and you can move forward. Yes Pain, yes time, yes cost… but you can overcome it.
NDE’s and ESM’s also share the ability to push us to live our ultimate life. One of the things I have enjoyed about cancer so many times is that I know first hand that tomorrow is not promised. Now is the time to act… Now is the time to take that chance… now is the time to risk, now is the time to believe, move and have your being.
My wife absolutely loves me, but she will admit i drive her nuts. I have a speaking company, I have a clothing line, I have a personal training business, I am finishing my 14th book, I have a coaster company for weddings parties sports events women events… I take guitar and drums lessons and I give guitar and drum lessons, I am starting another clothing line, I have a daily podcast (bet you didn’t know that) I have been working on an app that is set to launch globally in about a month (working on that for 3 years) I am working on starting another gym after previously owning one that was voted #1 in the country, I am launching a new podcast and Patreon channel oh… yea, Im also a pastor and traveling speaker.
So you say why and how? This is not about me, but for a second I will tell you how - first thing is I take care of myself so I have lots of energy, secondly I don’t waste time in front of TV… if its on I am watching a football game but my computer is on and I am almost always working. Third, I read - A lot. It feeds everything else I do and makes things easier. Reading is my fuel to spiritual fire, to business ideas and know how and my mental library for continued speaking and writing.
But here is the why… why not? Why not go for all you feel like you were created for. Most people will tell you they feel like they were created for more, that there has got to be more… but they never act on it… We all have talents, untapped dreams, potential and secret goals/hopes. They don’t just happen, you gotta go after them. Life might be over for you in 2 days… just last week outside our church we had a head on collision - two women in their 40’s. One tried to pass and ran head long into the other woman driving. Game over, times up. It is tragic… but so is living to a 100 and not tapping your potential… not at least trying. Remember the movie 3 o’clock high… the bully stares into the kids face and says “you didn’t even try”. Ohh that gets me every time.
Ecc. 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
So you have your day job… sewing seed, and you have your free hours in the evening… what are your hands doing? Are they idle… by that I mean are you on your phone, computer, TV, is all your time on hobbies that will not really produce anything… and look, some people are made to just work enough to pay the bills and they want to just hang out at home… thats cool. But what also about your spiritual walk? Are you stagnant in that as well?
Ecclesiastes 9:10
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
One more sage piece of advice from the wisest man on earth. Get better. Want to make things easier- get better. When I was learning how to play guitar a long time ago… I think 33 years ago, I was having a hard time playing bar chords… and I was complaining to my good friend Scott Miller who is a MONSTAH guitar player. he said well did anyone ever tell you the secret to playing great bar chords? I was shocked… no, no one has what is it… he leans into me as if to whisper quietly so the Russians don’t hear… and he says “practice”. Funny, but it also hit me between the eyes. Get better.
My advice to you today? If you are not doing it- try it. And if you are doing it- get better at it!
As solomon said “you never know what will grow when you sow”.

Some of the most famous words in all of comic book lore are those of the Hulk.
Don’t make me angry… you wouldn’t like me when Im angry… Or maybe, just maybe we might like you more…
What do you do when you are damned?
I don’t mean damned and going to hell… Yes we are all born sinners and heading to hell unless we reach out for Gods forgiveness and relationship… but I am talking about when we have all these emotions bubbling up and we want to lash out or explode. We have all been treated unfairly to some degree. Someone judges us unfairly, someone speaks lies about us or even someone maligns our character so they get the raise and the new promotion, or look like the better parent.
What do you do with those emotions?
Arthur Ashe one of the greatest tennis players to walk the face of the earth stood out not only because he was a monster on the court, but also because he was a young black man playing as early as the 1960’s. He paved the way for many other players of color… and it wasn’t easy… there were lots of inequalities, lots of bogus calls, lots of favoritism and a good share of racist banter behind doors… many times on part by other white players working against Arthur. But he did not respond, he did not blow up, he did not rant and rave much unlike many of his white counter parts. He couldn’t… not only that he knew it would only work harder against him… Could you imagine as he climbed up the ranks entering the pro’s in 1969 if he threw tantrums like John McEnroe? What it would cost him and what it would cost other players of color in the future?
so what did he do? We will get there in a minute…
In Karate Kid 2 Daniel sees a poster of Mr. Myagi’s nemesis breaking a log in half with a karate chop. He asks Mr. Myagi if he could do that… he responded “I don’t know, I never been attacked by a tree”. What is he saying in reality… there are better ways to spend ones energy.
Eph. 4:26,27 26“Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun set upon your anger, 27and do not give the devil a foothold.
Notice it does not say DON’T BE ANGRY….
That seems weird right? Shouldn’t the bible say no to anger? Well we know God got angry. Jesus flipped tables in the temple. Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees with some pretty strong language and even called them out.. saying do not pray like these hypocrites.
Interesting thing about this word Angry - be provoked, be moved to action
But it has 2 outcomes. Scripture says when we are provoked by anger to act in the flesh it is sin. But if we are provoked in anger to act in the spirit we are in line with God.
v. 27 This is what verse 27 says, do not give the devil a foothold. on your anger.
Foothold is an opportunity… for satan.
so you take that opportunity that is there due to anger and you use it in a Godly way.
How can you pour that energy/anger/passion into a better version of yourself. Or into a Godly product or passion?
Arthur Ash took his anger and used it to play each match like it was a ballet but he danced like he was on fire… he played a hard game with a soft heart. He let it fuel him to prove his haters wrong… Did you catch that? He didn’t hate back, he just simply used it to prove to those who hated him that he deserved to be there, to be that man, to be that good and in fact to be that great.
Are you feeling a little angry? Ask God how he wants to use it in order to make him look good… you might be surprised just how good it feels to be angry.

Goals Suck... Systems Better

My highest downloaded podcast this year was on systems… so I thought I would hit that topic again.
Where am I going today with it?
Well, Some call it the technique of systemization. Systemization is the skill of developing a process around a set of common tasks or goals.
Goals are great, but they are limited in how much you can improve them… however systems are the key.
Goals have a tendency to have a start and immediately an end… and the middle is messy and very little attention is given to it. But that middle part is the system… its the guts, it what’s cuts through the ifs and or butts… its a must.
This was more or less popularized by Dr. Edward W. dimming after WW2 in Japan. You can study much of it by looking into him and the concept Constant and never ending improvement Or Kaizen. But for the sake of argument it rebuilt Japan into a business juggernaut.
How much can you improve a system to achieve your goals. Lets say you have a goal to read more… that is not enough. Even if you say, lets read 10 pages a day… still not a system. You say, ok, lets read 5 pages in the morning and 5 in the evening. Still not a system.
You must understand it is extremely important to build the system with the right framework because once you do it - it will function correctly 99% of the time.
And again, goals for the sake of goals lead to haphazard random results.
You say ok Garth what is the system for reading 10 pages a day (or to do anything for that matter) First you need a why for what you are trying to do?
Why you ask do you need a why? Because the why is the source of power behind the system you are creating. Look- to just read 10 pages in order to say at parties I read about 10 pages a day… is pointless. You might as well just say I pick my nose 10 times a day. But the power is in the WHY I read.
So lets say your why is so that you can do better in business.
Ok, now what is the system.
Now that we have the why we can start with the What? What should you read, are there particular books, magazines, in your field of business? I would bet yes.
Next is How should you read? Read alone, with a pad of paper to take notes, read in good lighting.
Where? Maybe in your office, coffee shop, in your car during coffee breaks and lunch.
Who… who should you be reading. Are there authors that are more valuable to read than others.
Now here is where the mindset of systems comes into place… you can now improve all of these by doing more homework. Ask other people in your field, what and who they read. look at your calendar and see if you can find a few more minutes to read a few more pages. Figure out a better way to take notes on what you read… is there an app that allows you to capture your notes or html text? (BTW try camscanner its my favorite for this) Can you listen to books on tape, are there youtube pages covering in depth what you are reading…
Now is the system done? Not even close. Remember systems are built on never ending improvement.
so keep pushing forward… Who can you discuss with regarding the books and articles you read. Can you teach it to someone in order to even better understand it? Could you write a book? Can you meet any of the authors or at least reach out to them on social media. Is there a conference with any of the authors or topics you are studying up on?
Always focus on the system. You can add just one little extra detail every few days and it will pay off big time.
Remember your why? it was so that you could do better in business.
If you started a goal 6 months ago… with no system… where would you be.
But if you started a system for a WHY… where would you be?
The amazing thing about having a system mindset is that you begin to practice it in every area of your life.
So again your why was “so that I can do better in business”. What is your guess as to how much farther you would be in 6 months working a system rather than just working a goal?
This is the difference between people who achieve more in life… its not just prayer, and fasting and reading your bible more and hoping God gives you favor or you earn his blessing- its knowing how to build a system around these things.
James 2:17So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead. 18But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.…
That word deed in the greek ‘er-gon has a strong meaning of work with intention… again always intending to improve my work… a system if you will.
And you could easily insert the word goal with the word faith for even greater clarity. How does it sound? Lets read it again…
So too Goals by itself if it does not result in action is dead. But I will show you my life goals with a system/action.
Paul is throwing down with a put up or shut up.. he is calling them out. Show me your goals, i will show you my action my system.
So get your SYS-tem together, get it going and make life happen!

It was one of those moments that I just needed a fresh experience from God… and high if you will. I was worn out, tired and thought to myself - I need to go somewhere that is in the middle of a revival. Somewhere that God is just pouring and moving and filling people… and then God spoke to me.
Create your own revival…
it hit me so hard I wrote it down on a 3/5 card and put it on my prayer board.
Create your own revival.
So we all want to hear from God, feel God and be used by God… We all want to have and live in that moment… that spiritual high if you will. Now I know it is not always possible, and maybe not advisable, but how do you get there. How does one build their faith to step into that.
Stages of faith seen in the scriptures.
You ask Jesus "if you can”
You ask Jesus “if you are willing”
If I can only touch him
If he touches me
If he says the word
If I read his word
If I hear his word - Rhema word, You hear him speak to you.
Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
Nothing is from 2 words. No and Rehma.
Rhema - word spoken by God
It means no freshly spoken word of God will be impossible. No freshly spoken word of God will come to you that does not contain its own ability to fulfill the will of God (to perform) itself.
So where am I going with this. Over the years I have learned that I don’t need a high, I just need to know that I am living in his presence… and I know that by knowing that I am hearing his voice on a regular basis.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God. Rom. 10:17
As we hear God speak to us, and as we act on it - we see God move and we have our faith built. In that moment I am on a little bit of a high… more like a confidence builder.
If i want to live from confidence to confidence I need to only seek to hear his voice and act on it.
As paul Said in 2 Cor. 3:18 We live from Glory to Glory. We live like Christ and move into being more like Christ as we obey him.
Do do you want to live on a high today? Don’t forget to listen and obey!

The band Capone has a song out called Oh no… the chorus is kind of catchy it is just oh no, oh no, oh no no no no no… but on Youtube they have a 1 hour loop of the song just going over and over that part of the song… maybe you should listen to it in the morning getting ready for work, just to get it driven deep into your head… NO.
MTT. 5:37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. ( the evil one)
pain-ridden, emphasizing the inevitable agonies (misery) that always go with evil.
DAY 2
Why it’s important to say no
Let’s go through a couple of reasons why it’s so important to say no.
- Do less to deliver more. Focus on one thing at a time, and do it well. You can produce much higher quality work.
- Saying no can benefit your performance your career and your spiritual life. Being assertive pays off in the extra time it gives you for what is important.
- It’s important for your mental well-being.
Healthy people say NO a lot more than unhealthy people.
- Prevent burnout. both mental and physical health.
- Build and maintain strong and healthy relationships.
You will add greater depth to a relationship saying no, then by saying yes.
- Be realistic about your capabilities. Sometimes, willingness is not the issue. You may not have the right skills and abilities for what is being asked of you at work. This alone is a valid reason to decline a request.
Maybe you have the time, you want to do the job, you are willing to do the job… but if you don’t have the skill - then say no and protect your emotional wellbeing.
When it comes down to it, the reason saying no is so important is because it protects our best interests - and that is us. It has been said many times before, if we don’t take care of ourselves no one else will.
So what are some practical ways to say no.
10 different ways to say no
First of all you can’t beat just saying NO. It is easily understandable, you don’t have to explain it, and it cuts right to the point… but here are some others.
- 1.Sadly, I have something else going on.
- 2.I have another commitment.
- 3.I wish I were able to, but Im just not able
- 4.I’m afraid I can’t.
- 5.I don't have the bandwidth for that right now.
- 6.I’m honored you asked me, but I simply can’t.
- 7.Thanks for thinking of me. However, I’m not able to.
- 8.I’m sorry, I’m not able to fit this in.
- 9.Unfortunately, I already have plans. Maybe next time!
- 10.No, thank you, but it sounds lovely.
- 11.I just can’t give you the best of me, so I will have to pass.
- 12.So sorry but my calendar is booked.

Def Leppard high and dry… (not as good as on through the night) But the song No No No… on cassette
MTT. 5:37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. ( the evil one)
pain-ridden, emphasizing the inevitable agonies (misery) that always go with evil.
2 Tim. 1;7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
It takes self control to say no.
Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (all things does not mean everything)
When should you say no?
These five thoughts
1. If you feel uncomfortable
Nobody knows your limits better than you do. If you are asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable, it could be a sign that you need to say no. Take a moment to do some mindful breathing and listen to your intuition.
2. You feel guilty or obligated
Look at work, it can be particularly difficult to say no. Your job may require you to do what superiors delegate tasks to you. But there are times when it might be right to question wether to say yes or no.
And outside of work… never say yes due to guilt or obligation.
3. When you’re overloaded
Look some of us can do 10 things at once and still take on more. Some of us set a list of 25 goals for the year. There are others of us who need to limit their day to 3 things. Their goals may only be 2 for the year. But only you know when you are overloaded… when you feel that way, say no.
4. If the request crosses your personal boundaries, your moral compass or questions your morals… say no.
Its not worth living with that regret for the rest of your week or even life.
5. If you are only saying yes to please someone else - Then first please yourself and say NO.

Lesbians at the Michaels Frozen Custard.. I don’t do guilt.
The bible does not really have a word it uses for guilt as a feeling… and that is where we typically struggle- right? We feel guilty because of something we did, but the truth is we don’t feel guilt over the act of sinning… but rather the consequences… let me explain.
“This word and its many derivatives focus our attention on the full impact of guilt, which always involves three distinct aspects: (1) there is an act that brings guilt, We did something (2) there is the condition of guilt that results from the act - we are now guilty, and (3) there is the punishment that is appropriate to the act.” We must not face the cause and effect of being guilty. (Encyclopedia of Bible Words, 322)
In the Old Testament the concept is quite relational. An action puts a breach within a relationship and amends must be made. This is the judicial component of guilt. it is now our obligation to someone, as well as our being answerable for our wrongdoing and liable for punishment.
So what???
The overarching concept of guilt, then, is that humanity has acted in such a way that brought a breach to relationship with God, self, and others, as well as transgressed a moral code which places us in debt to another. The feelings of guilt, then, are but one of the results of this breach. We feel guilty because we are guilty.
Or we feel guilty because we feel the negative affects on the relationship. Guilt always is worse in a relationship… Now you might say… I felt guilty eating a piece of cake… I would argue that this is self guilt - between you and you, by breaking a promise or standard you held. And or, it is guilt by how you think others see you in relationships and you now feel like you have let them down in the relationship by eating cake… I mean really… they would like me and I would have a better relationship with them if I had not eaten the cake.
i know this is nit picky… but understand this as we look to David in Psalm 32
In Psalm 32 David speaks of his experience of “keeping silent” and as a result his “bones wasted away.” But then he says “I acknowledged my sin to you and I did not cover my iniquity” and as a result he walked in forgiveness and it is implied that this “heaviness” was removed from his spirit.
His actions caused guilt between he and God… that is the relationship effect right there. but what we sometimes miss is the beauty of guilt… right here in this verse.
Guilt was like a beeping truck backing up… warning, warning… guilt is a gift in that is warns us of relationships what are starting to go off rail. So when feeling guilty, thank God for that feeling and then confess your guilt to God and ask him to restore your relationship with him or others… and he will! It is amazing the beauty of guilt when you see it that way.
