Romans 5
1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God (so things should be good now… we got peace - Right?) because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
In 1983, Australia hosted its ultramarathon, a 573.7 mile foot race from Sydney to Melbourne. This is a race that takes days to run, and professionals from all over the world came to participate. Shortly before the race began, a 61-year-old farmer named Cliff Young, wearing overalls and goulashes over his boots, walked up to the registration table and requested a number to enter the race. The people at the registration table thought it was a joke—that somebody was setting them up—so they laughed. But Cliff Young said, "No, I'd really like to run." So they gave him a number and pinned it on his old overalls.
Cliff Young walked over to the start of the race. All the other professional runners, who were decked out in all their running regalia, looked at him like he was crazy. The crowd snickered. They laughed even more when the gun went off and the race began, because all those professional runners had sculpted bodies and beautiful strides, but not Cliff Young. He didn't even run like a runner. Cliff Young ran with an awkward, goofy-looking shuffle. All through the crowd people were laughing, and finally, someone called out, "Get that old fool off the track!"
Five days, 14 hours, and four minutes later, at 1:25 in the morning, Cliff Young shuffled across the finish line of the 573.7 mile ultramarathon. He had won the race. And he didn't win by a matter of minutes or even an hour or two. The second place runner was nine hours and 56 minutes behind him. Cliff Young had set a new world record for the ultramarathon. The press mobbed him wondering what kind of special running shoes he must have had, and they rummaged through his backpack wondering what he'd survived on—he'd lived primarily on pumpkin seeds and water—and then they discovered the secret to his success: - HE NEVER STOPPED RUNNING! Cliff Young had shuffled his way to victory without ever sleeping. The other runners would run for 18 hours straight, and then stop and sleep for three or four hours. He endured running five days, 14 hours, and four minutes at the age of 61.

Here are some verses about perseverance in the Bible:
- Matthew 10:22 (NIV): "You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.”
They will ask: WHY WOULD YOU PERSEVERE FOR CHRIST? - THEY WILL BE MAD, ASHAMED, CONVICTED
- 2 Corinthians 12:10 (NIV): "Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, with insults, with hardships, with persecutions, and with difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
PAUL STATES THESE HARDSHIPS BRING WEAKNESS AND THEN GOD TAKES OVER…
LIFEGUARD WAITING TILL THE GUY GOES UNDER A 3RD TIME - JUST WAITING FOR THE FIGHT TO GET OUT OF HIM.
- Hebrews 12:11 (NIV): "No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it's always painful. But afterward, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace.”
HARVEST - Perseverance while going through it seems like a lot of manure… the harvest is worth it.
- James 1:2-4 (NIV): "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of various kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
TRIALS OF VARIOUS KINDS - GK GREATLY DIVERSE GROWING IN INTENSITY.

"In the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, a Japanese gymnast, Shun Fujimoro, was competing in the team competition. Somehow. during the floor exercises, he broke his right knee.
His mindset was not that I came to compete, nor was it that I came to win… it was I came to complete or what I would add persevere until I am done.
I came to prove myself…
NO SLEEPING - STAY AWAKE - RUN FOR THE PRIZE
2 Tim. 2:3 Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. 5 And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor.
Paul uses 3 individuals in regards to serving God… but ask yourself what do they have to persevere against?
Farmer has to persevere elements of the world
Warrior persevere over others
Athlete must persevere over himself

Afflictions = (i.e pain, problems, suffering, lack)
Do you know how biologists evaluate life? It is in terms of the capacity to
experience pain, the more the pain, the higher the life form. The highest life form not only feels pain the most, but can also feel others pain as well.
**When we deny pain we deny being human and how God has created us to be and learn.
Society wants you to avoid pain.. yellow teeth, single, overweight, wrinkles, financial lack, loss,
The sophistication to avoid pain in todays world has become world class.
Here is how most of us deal and avoid pain.
Deal with it - “its your fault”
Avoid - anything that distracts the purpose of pain (spending, bitterness, money, overeating, joining a cause, exercise, hobbies….)
C.S. Lewis - pain is Gods megaphone to a deaf world… but we learn to put in earplugs.
Pain forces you to face your deepest issues keeping you from being like Christ.
So God tells us rather than avoid, blame or run we should rejoice.

9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
V. 11 Make every effort to rest… (this sounds like work LOL)
You want to rest, so you make every effort. You close the blinds, you turn off the lights, you turn on your sound machine, put on the fan, you get your favorite pillow and blanky, you drink some warm milk with some melatonin… that is making every effort to rest.
Application: I will chew on Gods word for every area of my life to find rest.
In the spiritual… God what area might I not be trusting you. Show me, I will confess it and then trust you and rest in you.
Heb. 4:12
V. 12 the word of God is active, alive, powerful double edge sword…
***What this means is that the word not activating in you and causing rest is not the words fault… its yours.
This word that you chew on… that you meditate on will bring great rest, great blessing, great insight,
“Active” in GK full of energy to produce a work.
Chew on it and suck the energy out of it… and you will have change.
WHY?
It will uncover areas of your life you have not yet yielded to the Father.
“JUDGES’ It has a critical eye that catches all the little details. A “judging skill”
V. 13 God sees all things… so if we are not entering his rest by accepting his word with faith… he can tell us. HE SEES IT!
The first 3 verses speak of the children of Israel who did not listen to the word of the Lord and did not enter his rest - into the promise land.
12 spies came back and gave an evil report -
Joshua and Caleb -
The report was accurate and truthful but it was evil… because they did not accept it in faith.
ONLY JOSHUA AND CALEB DID…
They would enter the land of rest by waring with their enemies… but God would give them the victory!
*in fact Caleb so believed the word he came back to Joshua and said give me my mountain 45 years later… at 85 years of age, he had Gods word resting in him… believed it, trusted it, rested in it…

Rest - its not enough to just hear the word. Heb. 4:2 Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but the word they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united with those who listened with faith. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,
“As I swore in My anger,
They certainly shall not enter My rest,”
although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this passage, “They certainly shall not enter My rest.” 6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, NASB
Hear the word with Faith = Rest
V. 2 not being mixed with faith…
Mixed GK - the process of chewing food and it gets mixed with your saliva, masticated, digestible and usable for the body.
Meditate: a picture of growling the words… a deep guttural
The woman in the store who’s child is throwing a hissy fit. The woman keeps calm and is quietly looking at the child saying… Hold it together Ashley, Calm down Ashley, relax Ashley…
Another older woman comes up to her and says… kids can be a challenge, but I admire the way you handle it…. Quietly telling your sweet little Ashley to stay calm…
The woman looked up at here and said “IM ASHLEY!”
Quiet deep meditation.
COW
Meditating on Gods word… the word is reminiscent of the word we use when we say a cow chews its cud.
When a cow chews its cud:
- gets more nutrients out of it
- Helps produce more milk
- reduces stress in the animal
- a cow chews its cud 8 hours out of each day
When we chew on Gods word… we see the same results
- we get more spiritual nutrition
- We produce more of our purpose (milk)
- Reduces stress/ experience peace
- We should have his word in our mouth all day long.

Ps. 51:10-12

Psalm 106
24 The people refused to enter the pleasant land,
for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them. 25 Instead, they grumbled in their tents
and refused to obey the Lord.
34 Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land,
as the Lord had commanded them.
35 Instead, they mingled among the pagans
and adopted their evil customs.
36 They worshiped their idols,
which led to their downfall.
37 They even sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons.
38 They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters.
By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan,
they polluted the land with murder.
39 They defiled themselves by their evil deeds,
and their love of idols was adultery in the Lord’s sight.
Whatever you don’t kill will grow up to destroy you, your children, your future and your eternal impact.
Here are some real-life examples of how small things can escalate when neglected:
Personal Health
- A small cut: If not cleaned and bandaged, it can become infected, leading to more serious health problems.
- Ignoring a toothache: Can result in cavities, gum disease, and potentially tooth loss if not addressed.
- Skipping exercise: Over time, this can lead to weight gain, decreased fitness, and increased risk of chronic diseases.
Home and Maintenance
- A leaky faucet: Can lead to water damage, mold growth, and increased water bills.
- A small crack in the wall: If not repaired, it can worsen over time, compromising the structural integrity of the wall.
- Neglecting yard work: Can result in overgrown weeds, attracting pests, and potentially damaging the lawn.
Finances
- Ignoring small debts: Can accumulate interest and late fees, making them harder to pay off.
- Not budgeting: Can lead to overspending, difficulty saving, and potential financial instability.
- Impulse purchases: Can add up and strain your budget if not kept in check.
Relationships
- Unresolved minor conflicts: Can build resentment and create distance between people.
- Neglecting to show appreciation: Can make others feel undervalued and lead to strained relationships.
- Lack of communication: Can result in misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
Workplace
- Procrastinating on small tasks: Can lead to a backlog of work and increased stress.
- Ignoring minor errors: Can result in larger problems and decreased productivity.
- Lack of attention to detail: Can lead to mistakes that impact the quality of work.
General Life
- Clutter: Can create a sense of chaos and make it difficult to find things.
- Disorganization: Can lead to missed appointments, lost items, and decreased efficiency.
- Poor time management: Can result in missed deadlines, increased stress, and a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Lets get personal… yes teach your kids how to love, and how to deal with difficult people.. but also teach them what a bully is, and how to defend themselves, teach them that if they do defend themselves you will celebrate them and not discipline them. Rather than have your child deal with long lasting depression, suicidal thoughts and buried anger and bitterness.
And then of course there is your spiritual life… ignore that at your own peril.
Ignore that small tiny voice inside you
Ignore doing Gods word
Ignore praying, reading scripture and attending worship on a regular basis.
Fail to deal with these and watch your life crumble… or deal with them head on, destroy them and live in Gods victory for yourself and your family and your future.

ACTS
28 When they had been brought safely through, then we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The natives showed us extraordinary kindness; for because of the rain that had set in and because of the cold, they kindled a fire and received us all. 3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, “Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 However he shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 But they were expecting that he was about to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.
UP TO THIS POINT IN PAULS LIFE
Snuck out over a wall in Damascus
Stone and left for Dead in Lystra
Beaten and arrested Phillipi
Chased out of Thessalonica by Gangs
Mocked and laughed in Athens philosophers
Almost torn to pieces in Jerusalem
2 Cor. 11 he states….
He was in far more labors
Far more pain and imprisonments
Beaten times without number
In Danger of death numerous times
Five times whipped 39 lashes
Three times beaten with rods
Stoned dead once
Shipwrecked 3 times
Spent a day and night in the ocean
Has been in dangers of rivers, robbers, countrymen, gentiles, danger in the city in the wilderness, in the sea, among false brethren, has been in hard labor and hardship, sleepless nights, hungry and thirsty for days in the in the cold
TRIGGERED…Why does Paul not get
Triggered, angered, flooded, explosive, panic, give up, run away, fight or flight…
You would think at this point… after everything I just read- Paul would get bit by this snake and just lose it!
WHATS YOUR RESPONSE in the natural
SHRIEK
PANIC
SHAKE IT OFF?
SHAKE - not what you think!
apotinassó: To shake off, to shake away
Original Word: ἀποτινάσσω
Transliteration: apotinassó
Pronunciation: ah-po-tee-NAS-so
TO MOVE TO AND FRO…
TO SEPARATE ONESELF FROM
“Flick the lint off ones collar”
*you are not a part of this… give no thought.
PAUL HAD A CAUSE THAT WOULD
IMMOBILIZE ANY CIRCUMSTANCE
The cause supersedes the cost
The cause makes everything else insignificant
The cause is focus and everything else is mist
WHAT IS YOUR CAUSE…
Yes Jesus, Yes the gospel, but what is the cause deep within that in which God calls you to brush everything else off.
WHAT HAS HE CALLED/CAUSED YOU TO DO?
PAULS GOT A MISSION
He is seized in Jerusalem - He’s got a mission
He is falsely accused and beaten - He’s got a mission
He is chained and sent to Festus, Felix, Agrippa and now Caesar… he’s got a mission
He is in a storm - He’s got a mission
He is shipwrecked - He’s got a mission
He is bit by a snake - He’s got a mission
PAUL IS IN BAD CIRCUMSTANCES
* NOTE: He does not let circumstances dictate what God has spoken to him about. Or how he sees his mission. - an angel spoke to Paul and said you will not die in the shipwreck and storm… but he does’t mention the snake.
YOU EVER GET A WORD FROM GOD AND THEN A CIRCUMSTANCE PUSHES BACK IN THE OTHER DIRECTION?
PAUL GETS BIT - no excuses, no why me, no mind talk of sin, death, what will people think
PAUL GETS JUDGED
Paul was a murderer… he killed Christians.
*I wonder how many of Todays Christians would have looked at the snake and said “well, I had it coming to me… I am the reason many Christians died”.
