GREATNESS -
and all your left with is a stack of books and a huge debt.
A medical student goes to college, study’s reads buys books and spends all this time becoming a doctor…. but if they never “practice medicine” they are only a “DOCTOR” in title and not really practice.
You “practice medicine”
You practice Christianity… you live it.
You will only be as great as your library!
2 Tim. 2:15
Study to show thyself approved unto God, workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
“Rightly dividing the word of truth” = applying it to your life.
If you know it - great, many people don’t even know it.
BUT….
the best practice is …. PRACTICE. YOU GOTTA DO IT.
This means study Gods word for every area of your life. Not just your spiritual life.

Gods grace
We speed we deserve a ticket- that is the law
We speed and the cop lets us off - that is mercy
We speed and the cop pays our ticket, and gives us $1000 for our next ticket- Gods grace.
By this we want to honor God and love him, so living righteously is easy when you understand his grace.
Ephesians 2:8,9
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
While we were yet sinners he died for us… against him, hating him… pushing him away and he still died for us.
It’s not grace until we abuse it.
God’s grace allows us to live sinlessly, over come sin!

I took the red pill

Matrix:After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I'm offering is the truth.
Brushing my teeth in grade school… then chew the red pill… YIKES!
Lord show me my heart, my wicked ways… why is he asking… because he knows he can’t trust himself and his own mind… he is jaded.
We are all jaded to some degree. We must ask God to give us his vision, his heart.
God is like a calculator, no matter what data you enter you will always get the right answer, if you get the wrong answer - it means you got the right answer, your mistake was that entered the wrong data or you don’t want to accept the right answer.
Psalm 139:23, 24
23
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

What would you do for a Snapple?
Thursday Dec 13, 2018

Your appetites are your destruction… 12-13
In Leonia, New Jersey, back in 1995, a man was arrested for stealing a truck full of Snapple. It turns out he had previously worked for Snapple, and had been fired from his job for stealing and drinking the beverages. Undaunted, he dressed up as a Snapple delivery driver and made off with a whole truckload of it. The police officer who reported on the crime made the statement: “He just has an uncontrollable appetite for Snapple beverages.”
Its not “NOT WANTING GOD IN YOUR LIFE” that is the problem. Its wanting something more than wanting God in your life.
i.e. if wanting God is at a 4 and wanting money is at 1, then you got a problem.
GLUTTONY
the three edwards
Thomas Costain's history, The Three Edwards, described the life of Raynald Ill, a fourteenth-century duke in what is now Belgium. Grossly overweight, Raynald was commonly called by his Latin nickname, Crassus, which means "fat."
After a violent quarrel, Raynald's younger brother Edward led a successful revolt against him. Edward captured Raynald but did not kill him. Instead, he built a room around Raynald in the Nieuwkerk castle and promised him he could regain his title and property as soon as he was able to leave the room.
This would not have been difficult for most people since the room had several windows and a door of near-normal size, and none was locked or barred. The problem was Raynald's size. To regain his freedom, he needed to lose weight. But Edward knew his older brother, and each day he sent a variety of delicious foods. Instead of dieting his way out of prison, Raynald grew fatter.
When Duke Edward was accused of cruelty, he had a ready answer: "My brother is not a prisoner. He may leave when he so wills." Raynald stayed in that room for ten years and wasn't released until after Edward died in battle. By then his health was so ruined he died within a year. . . a prisoner of his own appetite.
Raynalds job was to be a duke. to rule and reign. to enjoy the finest things in life, but his lust for food prevented him from a life of fulfillment.
I. The Ungodly Appetite is for More
Habakkuk 2: Verse 5 describes the uncontrolled appetite: “Furthermore, wine betrays the haughty man, so that he does not stay at home. He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, and he is like death, never satisfied. He also gathers to himself many nations and collects to himself all peoples.”
These words describe the Babylonians, and the appetite for more that controlled them.
Fleshly appetites are never satisfied and in fact only grow… voracious!

It's not about the wrapping
Wednesday Dec 12, 2018

No one gets excited about the wrapping… 12-12
So you don’t like church… thats just the wrapping, its whats inside (getting involved) that is the true gift of church.
I don’t need church… “Maybe that’s not the question”. Maybe the question is “how does the church need you?”
How does God want to use you? Starts with your giftedness.
Denying your giftedness is a sin. Failure to express your gift weakens the church (weakens the body of Christ). If your wondering if something you like to do is a gift or not- ask yourself does it build up the body of Christ. If yes is the answer, it is most likely a gift. Garth Heckman
You will grow more in God through using your giftedness then by holding back - even if you go to church, you limit Gods transformational power in your life by not being used by him in your giftedness.
Heb. 10:24, 25 24And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. 25Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
A good pastor friend of mine “Ben Bolin” said, it’s almost impossible to apply the bible to your life outside a life in the church” a life involved in the church!

Fuel Faith Fruit

Tuesday Dec 11, 2018
Years ago in the Macy’s thanksgiving parade a float ran out of gas and was stuck there in the center of the city… the irony was it was the Exxon mobile float.
The guy at the airport plugging all his stuff into his power strip, but didn’t realize someone had tripped over it and now nothing was being charged. *we are no longer being powered to sin, we are being powered to live righteously in Christ.
I am firmly rooted in Christ and am now being built up in Him. (Col. 2:7)
What ever you root yourself in will fruit- root = fruit.
Everything in my life is now being charged by his spirit. All things are now according to his word and his spirit.
the sin consciousness is trying not to sin… the grace consciousness is simply living for God, what does he want you to do today. It’s is understanding my power comes from being aware of his presence in my life.
Attention is the fuel to the spiritual life.
Everything starts between your ears… get your mind right, your heart follows and your actions will act!

Sin is Bold... but I know someone BOLDER!
Monday Dec 10, 2018
Monday Dec 10, 2018
1- Someone crapped on my windshield - footprints on my windshield… squatted down and just hammered my windshield…
The audacity, the boldness…
Thats sin! Why do we let it be so brazen…
why do we shrink from letting Gods grace and power be just as bold and brazen!
Galatians 5:16-18
16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.
THE PASSION TRANSLATION
16 As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self - life. 17 For your self - life craves the things that offend the Holy Spirit and hinder him from living free within you! And the Holy Spirit’s intense cravings hinder your old self - life from dominating you! So then, the two incompatible and conflicting forces within you are your self - life of the flesh and the new creation life of the Spirit.
The boldness of the Holy Spirit should overwhelm the boldness of the sin nature.
Ever just have a crazy evil thought: Murder your spouse, hold up a bank, cheat on your spouse, root for the cleveland browns…
Don’t beat yourself up for those, that is satan and his bold temptation….
But have a Holy Spirit grenade ready to pull the pin on…
I WILL NOT BOW!
Share Christ immediately or pray for someone!
Ask yourself “what would the crazy passionate jesus freak GARTH HECKMAN do?” and do it!

Everything is a test/ temptation
TEMPTATION
Middle age is having a choice of two temptations and choosing the one that
will get you home earlier.
He had finally got his chance to make the Really Big Sale. He was going into
the final interview on the biggest contract he had ever written. As he was
ushered into the office of the executive buyer, an assistant brought her
coffee and left. The atmosphere was cordial, and he knew he was giving his
best presentation ever.
Then the assistant tapped on the door, re-entered the office and spoke
briefly with the executive. She stood and said, "I apologize, but I have to
tend to a matter. I'll just be a minute or two." And she followed her
assistant out of the room.
The sales representative looked around the beautifully appointed office. He
saw her family pictures on her desk. Then he noticed a contract on her
desk. She had evidently been studying a bid from a competitor. Leaning
forward, he could see the column of figures, but it was obscured by a diet
soda can.
He was tempted to move the can and see the bottom line of his competitor's
bid. What harm possibly could there be in reading her private information?
After all, she had left it out in plain sight, almost. After wrestling with
himself a while, he finally decided to take a peek.
As he lifted the soda can, he discovered that the can wasn't filled with
soda at all. Instead it was a bottomless can filled with 1,000 BBs which
gushed out, and ran all over the desk and cascaded onto the carpet. His
attempt to short cut the competition was exposed.
Not every temptation is so obvious. Not every failure is so embarrassing.
But every temptation is a challenge. Not even Jesus was spared the
choosing.

Secret weapon.

When Anastasia got in trouble and said “you can’t help me” I said, yes I can, I have a secret weapon.
An out-of-towner drove his car into a ditch in a desolated area. Luckily, a
local farmer came to help with his big strong horse,
named Buddy. He hitched Buddy up to the car and yelled, "Pull, Nellie, pull!"
Buddy didn't move.
Then the farmer hollered, "Pull, Buster, pull!" Buddy didn't respond.
Once more the farmer commanded, "Pull, Coco, pull!"
Nothing.
Then the farmer nonchalantly said, "Pull, Buddy, pull!" And the horse easily
dragged the car out of the ditch.
The motorist was most appreciative and very curious. He asked the farmer why he
called his horse by the wrong name three times.
The farmer said, "Oh, Buddy is blind and if he thought he was the only one
pulling, he wouldn't even try."
What I see in this story...
We're not going through life alone. But the minute we think we're doing it
without God's powerful hand helping us, we give up. Those
are the times when we need to be reminded that we're not going through life
alone. Then, we are not just able, but thrilled to do
our part as we go through life together with our God.
John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

When Opportunity rocks.

The power of opportunity
The movie Rocky was awesome… but most people miss the reason why. It was not a good vs. evil. it was not a “he overcame all odds and won” It wasn’t rich vs. poor or champion verses loser…
The power behind the movie was simply “he got a shot at the title” he got an opportunity.
Ephesians 5:16 make the most of every opportunity…
We typically think of this as our own challenge. We look for opportunities for ourselves…But today I want to challenge you to look for ways to open doors for others and give other opportunities. And believe that God will pay you back in full.
