A young man has a father-in-law that he just can’t ever impress or please. They both like hunting, so one day the man takes his father in law out duck hunting. The young man spent a fortune on his dog for hunting and he knows for sure that it will impress his father in law. Finally one of them shoots a duck and the dog jumps out of the boat and WALKS ON WATER TO THE DUCK… brings it back and sets it in the boat. The father in law looks at his son in law and says “well look at that, you spent all that money on a dog that can’t even swim”.
Matthew 12 is an interesting chapter in the bible. WE don’t have time to read the whole chapter… but it is one where the Pharisees are so jealous, hateful and spiteful they just can’t see any good in Jesus.
All this falls on the sabbath (a day of rest)
Jesus and his disciples are out in the fields and his disciples eat some grain on the sabbath…
First off- what are the Pharisees doing out of the city??? Just simply trying to catch Jesus doing something wrong.
Then in the temple is a man with a shriveled hand and the Pharisees are trying to get him to heal the man so they can arrest him for working on the sabbath - Really? Jesus jukes them out of their socks with a series of questions and makes them look utterly foolish and heals the man.
The Pharisees are ticked… wanting to kill Jesus.
Then Jesus casts out a demon from a man. The Pharisees say it is because Jesus is filled with satan that he can drive out satan. Jesus again calls them on their stupidity and makes them look like a bunch of idiots.
Matthew 12:33-37
33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
v. 36 empty word = GK = Blameworthy and not seeking to find the good.
You might call them: "detractor". "Disparager", "vilifier", "belittler", "deprecator", "discreditor", "nay-sayer"
The psychologist will tell you they have a poor value of themselves… not just low self esteem, but they value themselves below others so they must devalue others to increase their value. We call this construals… the lens by which we see the world.
When you don’t see yourself through Gods eyes you create your own lens… which let’s just say is extremely lacking.
SO YOU ALSO BEGIN TO DEVALUE OTHERS TO TRY TO BOLSTER YOUR GRADING SYSTEM FOR YOURSELF.
You don’t have to be a blamer, a condemner or a whiner, or negative, hateful etc… to have a heart mouth problem. If you are unwilling to find the good in people and their actions to you probably don’t see yourself the way God sees you.
My superior in a construction company that I worked for used to belittle me. The good was that I used to teach him how to talk to me and used it as a chance to always thank him for the criticism and tell him how much I love him for caring about my job.
Your kids are always playing video games and not doing their homework. The good is they are home, not out vandalizing the neighborhood. They know how to be committed to something and you gotta love their desire to master something.
Your boss is always overlooking you for promotions. You can understand that he wants the best fit for his company… you wouldn’t want to work for a company where the boss didn’t care…
Look there is always good in something… your job is to find it. Even satan has his good points… he’s consistent, devoted and knows how to build a team.
Don’t be a Pharisee- look for the good!

Justin Bieber had an instagram post yesterday that blew up… it was even on Good morning America.
Basically it talked about how a few years ago it seemed like he had everything he could ever want but in reality he was in a very dark place and empty and void… until he gave his life to Jesus.
FIRST OFF: Kudos to you Mr. Bieber for being so brutally honest.
Here is a thought… How many of you find yourself wanting to trade places with someone? Maybe they are rich or have a beautiful wife, Maybe they are built like a tank, maybe they are a professional athlete with incredible skill… but regardless you are being tricked into thinking that if you had “that” whatever “that” is… you would be happier, fulfilled, life would be better!
I had a young girl who had started having sex at an early age in High school. At one point she finally gave her life to Christ and is an incredible woman of God now… but she shared a story that when she gave her virginity away it was not at all what she thought it would be…so she lied to herself and to others about it. She told lots of girls that they didn’t know what they were missing and it makes you a woman etc… etc…
But in her loneliness at home she would think, I could never tell anyone I made the biggest mistake of my life… so I just have to keep pretending and playing the game.
WHATS THE POINT? We see men who seem to have it all and yet I know that in their deepest darkest secret they can’t figure out why they don’t feel fulfilled… and they are to afraid to admit it… who would believe them? They have it all…
Many take their own life, many keep searching for the right formula… is it more money? More women? More trophies? More family? More business? More accolades?
And many come to Christ and fess up saying… everyone thought I had it… I didn’t have it at all. In fact I could name hundreds of such people… Justin Bieber is just one of them.

I just happened to write this in my journal a few days ago…
Social media has made many seem like experts to those who are insecure and feeling inadequate - when in reality all the “expert” has proven is that they can take a picture and type. And my guess is that most of these experts themselves are also insecure and feeling inadequate trying to fill a void only God can fill.
So what have we learned today? Quit worrying about why you are not someone else… they are struggling with the same issues you are… trying to fill the void… but you have the secret formula. A relationship with God. Push into him, lean into him… ask him for all he has for you, ask him to help you know his love more then ever before. Trust that he wants to reveal himself to you more every day. That is the key!
Luke 12:16-21
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
*Don’t try to be the man who is building bigger barns… getting ready to eat drink and be merry…
Because not even YOU know when you will stand before God.
And this world is not your final destination and this life is just a dress rehearsal for eternity.
Prepare for eternity! That is what brings fulfillment!
Being rich toward God is understanding that the only things you can take to heaven are the lives you changed!

Did you miss me? Labor day… 231 podcasts in a row… and I honored my wife and hung out with her.
1 Thess. 4:11-13
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
The light keeper - his job was to light the lanterns in the city square down the street when night came. He felt under appreciated and like no one cared about what he did. His wife knowing he was hard of hearing told him that what he should do when he is at the end of main street and ready to walk out of town back home… stop and look behind him back down mainstreet.
There all the way back he saw people coming out now that there was light. The older woman were sitting at tables drinking tea, the men were standing around smoking their pipes. Children were playing with their dogs, parents were now out walking their young families and talking, boys were courting girls and holding hands… and as many of them caught the old man looking back, they waved, smiled and said thank you.
You need to look back and understand you have impacted peoples lives. You also need to let others know they have impact your life.
Take time today to share this podcast with men who have impacted your life and let them know they helped form you and encourage you into who you are today.

Just a couple of days until the NFL… my favorite time of the year. So in honor of that I am giving you a few NFL highlights and tying in some spiritual truths.
The defensive player with the highest total is Darrell Green, who played in 295 games.
Your Christian walk is as much about defense as it is offense. What do I mean? Yes we should read and pray and obey…. but we should also be careful where we put our eyes, what we think, where we go, who we hang with. Be on the defense and protect yourself for compromising your Christian virtues. Sin starts with a thought and a bad choice.
The highest score in a National Football League (NFL) game occurred on November 27, 1966, when the Washington Redskins and New York Giants combined for 113 points in a 72-41 victory for the Redskins.
John G Lake said to truly grow in Christ one must Read his bible, pray, share his faith and step out in faith through pursuing the supernatural on a daily basis.
Talk about going on the offensive! Thats a full day… every day, that is a full week. That makes an amazing life!
Eph. 6:13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the breast plate of righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
THESE ARE ALL OFFENSIVE… DUH- WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE OFFENSIVE. Maybe your Xn walk is so hard because you simply play the Christian game to tie.
There have been 217 sets of fathers and sons to play in the NFL.
Set the example for your kids and or for those around you if you are not a father. People are watching!
Would you want your kids to have your spiritual disciplines? Your eating habits? Your viewing habits on the computer or tv?
The very first televised football game was back in 1939 and the total audience who tuned in was 500 large
Do you feel like your faith walk is little in comparison to others? Just keep practicing the basics (Read, pray and obey) and in time you will be surprised at great your faith will become.
- Contrary to popular belief, the 1972 Miami Dolphins ARE NOT the only team to go through the regular season undefeated.
In fact, there 1934 Chicago Bears, 1942 Chicago Bears went undefeated.
Don’t worry about wether or not you are noticed for your faith walk- or if anyone notices the sacrifices you make or the choices you make or the life you live… God sees you and God rewards you in time. Keep swinging!

Prov. 6:
23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light;
And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
24
To keep you from the evil woman,
From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
25
Do not desire her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her capture you with her eyelids.
26
For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,
And an adulteress hunts for the precious life.
27
Can a man take fire in his bosom
And his clothes not be burned?
28
Or can a man walk on hot coals
And his feet not be scorched?
29
So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.
30
Men do not despise a thief if he steals
To satisfy himself when he is hungry;
31
But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold;
He must give all the substance of his house.
32
The one who commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense;
He who would destroy himself does it.
33
Wounds and disgrace he will find,
And his reproach will not be blotted out.
34
For jealousy enrages a man,
And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35
He will not accept any ransom,
Nor will he be satisfied though you give many gifts.
Women today more then ever are being the pursuers of men in sexual relationships.
Affairs, adultery, sex outside of marriage etc… are becoming a way of life for women. There are many thoughts and guesses on why this is… some say women are now doing this to feel empowered. Some say the rise in women watching pornography, and some say it is just the slow acceptance that men had is now accepted for women… the playing field is now “even”. And of course the rise of women having sex at earlier and earlier ages adds to this problem.
I know first hand - any given week I will have women point blank hit on me and it’s not subtle.
When I owned my gym it was a regular occurrence… and yes they knew I loved Jesus and was a pastor… didn’t matter.
THE WAR IS REAL.
Here are my thoughts.
*Everyone is a target… You don’t want to be a target. Don’t fall into the lie that its flattering to get hit on. There is something wrong with that women inside that she feels like she needs you to fulfill her. SHE NEEDS JESUS.
*Don’t be THAT GUY. Look, there are times when I run away from temptation simply because I don’t want to be that guy. The guy like my other friends who threw away their marriage, ministry, family etc… Ask yourself- do you really want to be that guy?
*You will NEVER get rid of that stigma of being an adulterer.
v. 33 you will be taunted forever by your own mind, satan and by others opinions. Does God forgive? YES… but remember it’s like walking on hot coals… You may be forgiven but you will always wear those scars. You will always walk differently.
*If you lose everything from an affair- God warned you right here it can happen. Don’t get mad at God for your stupidity. Is a few seconds in bed worth the pain?
*If a woman’s husband or the father of a young lady comes after you for having sex with them… you better understand that God knows the heart of Jealousy and rage in a mans heart who has been cheated on. He will not spare his rage and anger… I am not saying God condones it, but he is warning you- it will get ugly.
***I walked outside to where my wife was standing talking to my neighbor. She had a bikini top on and shorts watching our kids when they were young. I saw from the window he was talking to her only so he could look at her cleavage… yeah, us guys know this stuff. So I walked out there and told him to quit looking at my wives chest… he laughed it off and my wife was so mad she was winded. BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE… I AM A JEALOUS HUSBAND… AND YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
*The penalty back in Christ day for adultery was for the man and woman to be stoned… I say this only to warn all of us men that as much as I am jealous of another man making the moves on my wife… I better be just as upset when my mind takes me there with another woman. If I allow lust in my heart and mind… I am no better than the guy I want to throw stones at.
When Joseph was pursued by Potiphars wife… he said “I can’t do this, its against the 10 commandments”. NO they were not even around yet. What he said was “I can’t do this to my master/my friend and I can’t do this to my God”.
He had such a respect for this man that he could not allow himself to be “that guy” in the eye of Potiphar. And he LOVED God so much he could not even allow the thought of tarnishing his walk with God to even enter his mind.

Holy healing healthy habits

Duffy Daughtery was the football coach for the Michigan State Spartans from 1954 to 1972. At the end of one game, Daughtery sent in his kicker to win the game. As the kick sailed through the uprights, the kicker looked at the referee. Why? Because he had forgotten his contact lens and couldn't see! Though he couldn't see the goalposts, he'd practiced the kick so many times, it was routine. This story might work great in a message on spiritual disciplines, Bible reading, consistent community or parenting
Scriptures about habits? All of scripture is about how we live so in a sense its all about habits. But they do all start in the head first. Renew your mind… renew your habits.
you must replace bad habits with 1 of these 3 habits
1 Holy habits - What is the secret? Make them the first thing of the day and you will master them easier. Start small and build up. Make one a group holy habit at least twice a month for the super charger to kick in. And spend a week for one Holy Habit a year to impact others.
2. Healing habits - Make it a point to heal people and relationships. Influence people towards health in their lives, boundaries and relationships.
Choose your words wisely. Whats the matter with you… or What is troubling you?
Quit telling people to change (this is a form of rejection) Rather ask them how you can serve them in that area.
3. Healthy habits. These are maybe the hardest to do because they deal with our fleshly appetites. However if you can master these you can master just about anything.
When I train people I tell them to start with the habit of exercise first. Don’t worry about diet. Then when they start to see results the diet is a little easier.
Now one of the keys to healthy life habits is realizing your motive must be rock solid. My motive to stay in shape was always wanting my boys and my wife to be proud of me. Now its having my grandkids proud of me… My grandpa can still play football with me, skateboard with me etc…
Heres a key: Look at it this way… exercising, losing weight and eating right is not a good enough why. But if you have motives built into future relationships they can push you. Your kids, your wife, your grandkids etc…
You may know me.
I'm your constant companion.
I'm your greatest helper; I'm your heaviest burden
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am at your command.
Half the tasks you do might as well be turned over to me. I'm able to do them quickly, and I'm able to do them the same every time,
if that's what you want.
I'm easily managed; all you've got to do is be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want it done; after a few lessons I'll do it automatically.
I am the servant of all great men and women; of course,
I'm the servant of all the failures as well.
I've made all the winners who have ever lived.
And, I've made all the losers too.
But I work with all the precision of a marvelous computer
with the intelligence of a human being.
You may run me for profit, or you may run me to ruin;
it makes no difference to me.
Take me. Be easy with me, and I will destroy you.
Be firm with me, and I'll put the world at your feet.
Who am I?
I'm Habit!

Mark 5
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
what do you do when things die?
Things we see here when things seem dead in our life.
#1 She was dead. Make no bones about it, she was indeed dead. The people did not misdiagnose this situation.
#2 Jesus was late and she died.
Jesus never seems to be on time… but he is never late. Do you think the man blamed the woman with the issue of blood for interrupting Jesus on the way?
#3 The callousness of people. Hey she’s dead, quit bothering Jesus about it. Quit thinking about it, quit worrying about it, quit grieving it, quit wasting everyones time. Its over, it was never meant to be… let it go!
But not to Jesus. This girl was very much alive.
Your dream might seem dead to you and everyone around you… but maybe you just can’t let it go because God wants to bring it back to life in his time.
#4 False compassion and mercy
38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him.
*They go from crying to laughing.
You will have people in your life who will act as if your dead dream is a huge deal to them and they are so sorry for your dead dream… and it’s just an act. It’s false compassion - and it’s appalling. They actually are glad your dream died, because their dreams died and why SHOULDN’T YOUR dream die as well.
As seen by them laughing at Jesus when he says “she is not dead only sleeping.”
Your dream isn’t dead, it’s only sleeping. When you tell people about your dead dream and how you still believe in it… you will get those who laugh.
AND WHAT DID JESUS DO?
Those who did not believe in this were asked to leave.
Sometimes you gotta get rid of those who do not believe in your dream. In fact, it’s essential.
