Be your own joy
Tuesday Nov 19, 2019
Tuesday Nov 19, 2019
If you cant enjoy your life you are burden to someone. The less you know how to enjoy your life, the more you are a burden to those around you. The more you like your life, and you must learn to like your life, the less of a burden you are on others.
God’s presence brings joy!
joy is God’s character! Its who he is.
1 Chronicles 16:27 says that “strength and joy fill his dwelling.” Psalm 16:11 reminds us that joy and “eternal pleasures” are found in God’s presence.
Want more joy? Spend more time with God in his presence.
There is nothing I would choose over spending time with God… he is my source for life, power, grace, joy!
Grow joy by spending time in Gods word.
Psalm 1:1-3 promises that if we “delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night,” then we will be filled with joy and we will be prosperous because we will bear fruit in every life season.
My favorite illustration - you move down south and you will start to speak with a southern drawl. You move to the east coast you will start to sound arrogant… ok, just kidding, you will pick up that nasal tone…
You spend time in the word of god and you will start to talk like Jesus… and thats a good thing. It will fill your mouth with joy.
Trust brings joy and peace.
Trust in god brings joy because you simply realize I don’t know how he is going to take care of this… but he is. I am excited to see how he does this.
EVER SEE A WORLD CLASS MAGICIAN/ESCAPE ARTIST? I find myself laughing as they handcuff him, tie him up, put duct tape around his mouth, put a bag over his head, lock him in a box, put it in a crate, drop it in the water…. and why do I laugh? Because I do not know how he will get out of this… but I do know he will and I will be awed.
Thats like God when we trust him…
Confidence and joy draw people!
“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).
1 Peter 1:6-8
6 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
Praise Glory and honor… not just from God but from others. People want to know why you are different.
I have had many people numerous times ask why I am so happy, or why I am so positive… or my favorite… Why is my aura so blueish green and glowing.

Matthew 27
32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
Why did Jesus refuse this…
Was it to kill the pain and be merciful?
Was it to kill him? - No because they break the legs
Most likely to prolong his life so they could continue to mock him and show him off as a spectacle…
BUT REGARDLESS… Jesus did not take it so that he could fully suffer and experience every ounce of agony given to him by the father.
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses (our mortality), but we have one who has been tempted (test, tempt or prove) in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
He had to absorb the pain.
The pain of rejection from his disciples while praying in the garden.
The pain of sleeplessness
The pain of every temptation known to man
The pain of being spit on (you are contaminated)
The pain of betrayal by Judas.
The pain of abandonment by all the disciples
The pain of denial by Peter
The mental anguish pain in the garden (the pain of what’s coming)
The pain of thirst and hunger
The pain of ridicule and humiliation
The pain of carrying the sins of the world
The pain of the Pharisees seeking to kill him
The Pain of misunderstanding between two thieves
**If Jesus would’n’t make excuses to deter and excuse the pain, then why would you make excuses to continue to experience it.

Everyone wants to walk in victory… walk like a boss… but sometimes we miss the obvious.
Ephesians
Chp. 1 Our riches in Christ
Our possessions in Christ
our position in Christ
Our responsibilities in Christ
A Walk in unity
A walk in purity
A walk in Harmony
(Before) a walk in Victory
I have met so many Christian men (and women) who are all out for Jesus and have lousy families… their missing the point.
They walk in everyone of these points until you get to family unity.
You have to have all these things in place to truly have victory in Christ. If your family, marriage and relationships with your kids is poor… you can forget about truly walking in Victory in Christ.
Any relationship (especially home relationships) are like personal hygiene. You must care for every area. You don’t just wash your hands and think everything else is ok. You can’t get away with just saying “hey I provided for the family”- that is not good enough. Garth Heckman

Lead yourself
I truly believe in the idea that the best leaders first lead themselves.
1 Corinthians 9:25-27, he writes, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” In other words, Paul worked hard at leading himself so that he could effectively lead others.
He was willing to go through the pain to better himself for the sake of others.
- Learn to get up early and enjoy it.
Make it a routine you enjoy.
Automatic coffee pot that will have a fresh pot ready at 5am. Have your favorite podcast ready to play to help you wake up. Have a bible and journal out to read and pray.
Look at your calendar and plan your day- who you will see, what you will do and how you will respond in each situations.
2. Learn to work out for the sake of working out when you don’t want to.
Sure you can work out to get bigger, stronger, faster and or thinner…
but the truth is- is that learning how to discipline your body when you don’t want to discipline your body is a key to success in every area of your life. When you don’t want to work out- discipline yourself to work out.
*also, it is the best way to fight stress, depression and anxiety.
3. Keep your spiritual disciplines no matter what and stay accountable. i.e. When you read, what you read, what you thought about what you read, take notes of what you read…
Meet regularly to discuss and motivate each other. But Keep Jesus time a priority and one worth staying accountable to.
4. Post it notes: but not just cool slogans and interesting and motivating quotes… but your values.
Sure you can put up things that say:
A wolf doesn’t care what the sheep are thinking…
We either make ourself miserable or make ourselves strong, the work is the same- you choose.
OK THOSE ARE COOL… BUT VALUES ARE MORE GUIDING AND MORE LIFE ALTERING WHEN THEY SOAK IN.
one of mine is: No defense, No attack, no regrets. (That was Jesus life in a nutshell)
You don’t have Jesus until he is all you got. C.S Lewis
I like putting them on my mirrors… why? Because I can read them and then look directly at myself to keep myself accountable.
5. You must keep improving yourself. Books, videos, Youtube, audible, podcasts.
Not for entertainment but for growth and advantage.
Craig Randall drives a garbage truck in Peabody, Massachusetts. in a garbage container one day, he noticed a Wendy's soft drink cup bearing a contest sticker. Having won a chicken sandwich the week before, Randall checked it, hoping for some french fries or a soft drink.
Instead, he peeled a sticker worth $200,000 toward the construction of a new home, reports U.S. News and World Report (11/6/95).
What we get out of life depends a lot on what we look for… Meaning you must teach yourself to learn at all times. When standing in the bank, when watching your kids t ball game, when on the bus or plane…

It’s to late…

The time has come and gone

The Formula: The Universal Laws of Success, Northeastern University professor of network science Albert-László Barabási
Your chance of success has little to do with your age. It’s shaped by your willingness to try repeatedly for a breakthrough. Realizing this was transformative for me. I started seeing Fenns everywhere.
Theres Alan Rickman whose first movie role came at 46, Ray Krock who joined the McDonalds franchise at 53, Nelson Mandela who emerged after 27 years in prison. Grandma moses was in her 60’s when she started painting, Sylvester Stallone started acting in his early 30’s. Julia Child who was 50 when she hosted her first cooking show. And Colonel Sanders of KFC was 65 when he started his business. The guy who started Grey goose vodka was 72, Sam Walton started Walmart at 42.
Whats your excuse? Its not good enough.
at age 75 he was given the promise… then he had to wait 25 more years…
God gave Abraham his promised child at the age of 100.
Gods promises have no expiration date.
Gods word and his work and his promises only fail when you give up on them. His plan for your life only expires when you give up on it.
You are only to old when you are dead.
How old will I be when I finally raise someone from the dead? The same age I will be if haven’t tried to raise someone from the dead.
How old will I be when I learn to lead worship at my church? The same age I will be when I don’t know how to lead worship at my church.
How old will I be when I finally get used by God in prophetic ways? The same age I will be if I don’t let God use me in prophetic ways.
How old will I be when I finally humble myself and serve my wife and have a happy marriage? The same age i will be if I don’t humble myself and serve my wife.
DUH…
When I was 25 I told my co worker Joe Steinke I had always wanted to learn guitar but now I was to old to really take it seriously or to try to learn it. He asked me “do you think you will always have wished you would have learned how to play guitar?” - I said yes… and he said then why not learn how to play it so in 10 years you don’t have the same regret.
*I learned it, I taught it, I wrote books about it, I made money from it!
What is something you have always wanted God to do, learn, experience, make happen - start now and don’t let anything get in your way.
Whats stopping you? You think time is the enemy… it’s not, it is a gift. You have lots of time ahead of you to live your dreams and go for God!
Your only enemy is refusing to start and believing you can’t.

1517… and 6
Integrity
Scientists now say that a series of slits, not a giant gash, sank the Titanic. The opulent, 900-foot cruise ship sank in 1912 on its first voyage, from England to New York. Fifteen hundred people died in the worst maritime disaster of the time.
The most widely held theory was that the ship hit an iceberg, which opened a huge gash in the side of the liner. But an international team of divers and scientists recently used sound waves to probe the wreckage, buried in the mud under two-and-a-half miles of water. Their discovery? The damage was surprisingly small. Instead of the huge gash, they found six relatively narrow slits across the six watertight holds.
Small damage, invisible to most, can sink not only a great ship but a great reputation.
USA Today, April 9, 1997.
It was basically a 6 square feet of space that caused the titanic to sink. Most men on average are about 6 square feet of space…
Your space matters.
You are here for a purpose that only you can fulfill.
What if you had not been born… what might this world be missing?
Now that you understand the you can understand how important you are to your future and the future God has planned for you.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, discovered the futility of life when it is lived only for this world. He gives these concluding remarks in the book of Ecclesiastes: "Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil" (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Solomon says that life is all about honoring God with our thoughts and lives and thus keeping His commandments, for one day we will stand before Him in judgment. This is our purpose.
Where might your 6 feet be missing?
Church?
Your kids sports events?
Your marriage?
Foster care?
Missions?

I love to laugh…
If you have ever heard me preach you know I love to make people laugh.
Joy is an energizer… it can propel you through your week.
I don’t know if you have seen the tonight show episode with Jimmy Fallon and Bradley Cooper… if you have not you should youtube it. It gets me everytime.
One of my own favorite memories is as a teenager singing in church- bind us together.
The bible actually says a lot about laughter and joy
Ecc. 3:4 a time to weep and a time to laugh
Job. 8:21 he will fill your mouth with laughter
Prov. 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine
Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.
Luke 15:10 the parables show explicitly that the angels and God rejoice and and express exceeding delight
LAUGHTER
The material for this list comes from 2 sources. The first is the book "Health Healing and the Amuse System" by Paul E. McGhee and the other from "Roundup" a newsletter from Canyon Ranch, a health resort (www.canyonranch.com).
1. Laughter reduces stress hormone levels so you feel less stressed.
2. Laughter enhances your immunity by improving your mood.
Your immune system is stronger on your "up" days and you are less prone to upper respiratory infections.
3. Laughter causes you to breathe more fully, bringing in more oxygen and releasing toxins.
4. After a good laugh your blood pressure drops, heart rate and breathing slow down and muscle tension decreases.
5. Humor helps you find joy in life, even in stressful times.
6. Laughter increases productivity and creativity.
7. Laughter helps your muscles to relax.
This natural relaxation effect not only helps to reduce stress but it also has been shown to alleviate heart disease, headaches, chronic anxiety and other problems.
8. Laughter alleviates pain in the chronically ill.
Norman Cousins in his book "Head First: The Biology of Hope" noticed that 10 minutes of belly laughter often gave him 2 hours of pain-free sleep.
9. A good belly laugh is cardiac exercise and is referred to by some as internal jogging!
10. Laughter can help to shorten a hospital stay.
Patients say that humor and shared laughter helped to raise their spirits and take their minds off their illnesses. Laughter feels good and it is good for you!
What happened to joy and laughter?
Was there a law passed recently that made it impossible or illegal to laugh?
political correctness has stolen a lot from our society and it has creeped into the church.
Look life is set up to steal our joy.
Family problems and stress: kids, job, marriage, sex life, money, health etc…
Not to mention all the other people out there who want to steal your joy and laughter.
So we have to protect it and go after it and relish it.
Did you know that most adults are at the peak of their laughter at age 4… unless you learn to preserve and nourish it.
Here is your prescription for laughter,
- Call an old friend who makes you laugh: Mitch Alexander, Mike Isbell, Donny Hunt, David Payas, Greg and Gary Schneider…
- Listen to a great comedian (Nate Bargatze)
- Tell a friend or spouse about one of the funniest times you have ever experienced…
- Rejoice and laugh in faith at all that God is doing in your life!
God I don’t know how this will all work out… LOL, but I am waiting to see. I trust you.

What’s your downfall?
Oreos? Lays potato chips… you can’t eat just one, Hershey kisses? Maybe its mini donuts… or fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies?
so when you take a hard look at men in scripture and why they fell to sin… it had very little to do with the bad and the ugly and the wicked. Godly men in scripture typically fell into sin due to good reasons.
Abraham sold out his wife Sara 2 times to save his skin… but he was probably thinking…how can we have a child and build the nation of Israel if we die… so this makes sense. I love my wife and I love God and his plan for my life… so I will justify my actions.
Look at Samson… the strongest man alive. He could lift up a Gate of a few thousand pounds, He ripped a lion apart with his bare hands… he killed a 1000 men with the jawbone of an ass… he was impenetrable - he could not lose!
But why did he fall?
Drugs?
Evil practices of witchery?
Serving other Gods?
Porn?
Money?
Apathy?
NO- he fell from Gods grace because of what he was in love with. He was in love with Delilah. I am sure she was some smoking hot, trashy, sleazy ex porn star… but he loved her. He was willing to do anything for her.
Hey here is a question? What do you love? Could it possibly be the one thing that leads you away from Christ?
Maybe you love hunting, cars, your job, your kids, your family, your hobby, your cabin….
The danger is falling away without recognition because you are in love with that which is leading you away from your first love?
Remember Revelations 3:15-17 you have fallen away from your first love.
So we need to be careful what we allow our selves to fall in love with. Have you ever found yourself attracted to another woman then your wife? I have… what did I do? I avoided her like the plague and focused more time on my wife. I was not about to let that which I COULD fall in love with destroy what I am supposed to BE in love with.
We also need to realize most of us will not fall away from God due to some major huge sin… to begin with. We will start to slowly slide away ever so slowly toward something we like, love and then can’t live without. Catch it now! I will not fall away from God due to murdering someone, or drug addiction or worshiping satan… aint gonna happen, but I could fall away from God wanting to provide more for my family… and getting more money and job security and raises, and promotions and …. see where this is going?
Kev and his wife… celebrating 20 years of marriage - one glass of champagne (they loved champagne) only to fall into addiction again. for 3 years straight!
Philippians 3:3 put no confidence in the flesh… especially if you think you flesh might like it!

Embrace the suck! Teach your kids how to do hard things. Teach ourselves how to do hard things.
Somethings you get to choose - somethings you don’t… but the person who chooses the hard things has the advantage.
Jesus Tempted in the wilderness for 40 days and tempted in every way… he went out in order to be tempted, he chose to go out in the wilderness knowing he would be alone, in the heat, with out food, and tempted by Satan himself.
The suck means we are in the middle of 2 options.
The first option is satans plan for us. To fudge, to squirm out of Gods perfect will, to justify quitting or giving up. That is the first option. The second option is Gods plan which is for us to learn something in order to have a greater faith. To be perfected as he would tell us in scripture. It is ultimately to make us more like Jesus… and who doesn’t want to be like their hero! So embrace the suck.
Embrace the suck…
Embrace the suck of temptation
Embrace the suck of health problems
Embrace the suck of financial problems
Embrace the suck of relationship problems
Embrace the suck of job hassles
Embrace the suck of children issues
There must be a greater reward you see in order to go through the fight. You must understand that to embrace the suck is seeing the greater reward on the other side.
When the shit hits the fan… came from the 1930’s from a military background. It was meant to speak of that which was hidden or secret now gets found out.
When I feel like I am getting tested I like to think of this phrase, but I change one word in the sentence.
When I embrace the suck… is When the spirit hits the fan…
When you embrace the suck… hang on because the spirit will hit the fan. God will break out in a new and unusual way and I have seen first hand that this is when Gods power shows up in powerful ways.
Remember what happened to Jesus after he embraced the suck of temptation…
First he had angels come and attend to him, pep talk, gatorade, ice pack… Im not sure, but I am sure it was pretty powerful. Then he went out into his ministry… the most powerful years of his life.
Embrace the suck… and expect the spirit to hit the fan, expect to be strengthened and moved into a greater more powerful ministry.

Psalm 91
1
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3
Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8
You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9
If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10
no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13
You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15
He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
We never like to think that there are rewards from God… we like to think he treats everyone equal… he gives out trophies to everyone - even if you were 129th place.
And while his grace is sufficient for all of us to be saved, he is very open about how those who fully commit to following him will have a different experience in their walk then those who only half heartedly follow him.
Look at the story of the talents… he gives 5, 3 and 1. The guy who does nothing with God’s talents gets punished and his talent is given to the one who invested his.
This Psalm clearly illustrates that God loves to show his favor on those who claim to love him and then actually love him and in fact tell of his love to others.
The truth is we have everything we need to overcome the enemy, to walk like a boss and to live victoriously and never fear the devil… we have everything we need… if we do it. We have everything we need… if we live it.
3 things:
V. 9We make him our dwelling place.
The commitment to stay with him no matter what life may bring… do you commit until life gets hard? Then he is not your dwelling place he is your pit stop, your rest area.
A story about a professor who started out his class every year saying “I don’t give out A’s. I never give out A’s, no one in this class will ever get an A. My standards are way to high for anyone to get an A… so if you were looking for an easy class and an easy A- you should leave now and drop this class. And yes, usually about 10 students would get up and leave. He would then close the door and look at those left and say… now that we’ve separated the wannabes from those that are the real deal… lets have some fun…. and yes many of them ended up getting A’s.
Is God truly your dwelling place? Or are you just a wanna be?
We love him.
Love is an action, it is a verb. It is something you do not feel. Is your love simply a feeling? if so, you will never find God to be your personal savior. Oh, he may in fact be your savior… but not on the level you would like because you never sought to truly love him. It is not enough to have Jesus be your savior, he must be your lord. You must LOVE HIM. It is an action.
No one says I feel jogging. You can say I feel like jogging… but you can’t feel jogging because Jogging is verb. Some men confuse Loving God with a feeling… when Loving God is an action!
We acknowledge him.
Ever wish you were so famous or rich that wherever you went a person would go ahead of you and announce to the whole room, party or audience…. “May I introduce Mr. and Mrs. Garth Heckman”
Cool right?
When God talks about protecting us and rescuing us… he says its to those who acknowledge him. That word there literally means that where’ve you go people say to themselves “well looks like God got here”. You represent God and because of that people know it.
I have had a few jobs where I will walk in and people will say “well the preacher is here”. It was their sincere way to poke fun at me that all I do is talk about God…. I took it as a huge compliment. I acknowledge God…
Someone has a problem? A blessing? A good day, a bad day, a need??? I acknowledge God to them in that situation.
