Luke 9
who is the greatest…
you are asking this within spitting distance of Jesus… what?
And this is right after Jesus gets done telling them he is going to die for the world… crucified… yea but a who is the greatest?
The truth is we are all as great as Jesus in light of our power and authority…
However we only hold rank by how and if we use it.
Luke 10 - I have given you all power and authority… but rejoice that your names are in the book of life.
Are we running after the wrong things in our Christian walk?
We want rank, when Jesus wants servants.
We want notoriety when Jesus wants us to be nothing.
Rather than asking who is the greatest we should be asking who is the least.
Revel in the fact that God has given you all authority and Power- it’s yours- take it and go be a servant and change the world.

Grandpa tells a story of years ago his church put on one of the first big Christmas programs with animals, lights, live orchestra it was off the hook… it started of with a man being lowered down on a wire from the balcony to the front of the stage as an angel to give the good news to the Shepherds… the cable broke, the man hit the wall and cussed up a blue streak even using the Lords name in vain. That was it- that was all that mattered - it defined the whole 2 hours by one lousy moment.
The little boy yells yuck at the wedding after all the food, clothing, lights, band, etc… but when they kiss he says Yuck and defines the moment with his mouth.
define the moment with powerful speech!
why do we call Thomas “doubting Thomas”. He defined a moment with words that followed him into history. Now I am not saying he wasn’t a great disciple. He was actually murdered for his faith in India by a hindu priest.
Proverbs 12:18
The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
In the beginning was the word… the world, the beginning was defined by the word. Jesus is the word.
We hear a lot about actions speak louder than words and to some degree that is true… but we have all been crushed by words, we have all been given life through words.
Actions are powerful - no doubt.
But words have an even more profound way of defining moments and people.

Belief in Belief

What is belief. UFOs, bigfoot, love at first sight, Jesus is coming back… MJ is the greatest…
There's little difference in ethical behavior between the churched and the unchurched. There's as much pilferage and dishonesty among the churched as the unchurched. And I'm afraid that applies pretty much across the board: Religion, per se, is not really life changing. People cite it as important, for instance, in overcoming depression--but it doesn't have primacy in determining behavior.
In his book I Surrender, Patrick Morley writes that the church's integrity problem is in the misconception "that we can add Christ to our lives, but not subtract sin. It is a change in belief without a change in behavior." He goes on to say, "It is revival without reformation, without repentance."
Belief
When we believe God, it changes who we are, what we believe and what we do. Danny Dodge.
Belief
You believe in God, but the real question is "do you believe God". Belief is action!
Your true beliefs, the bottom line of what you really really believe (cut the bull this is really the way it is) your inner gut beliefs are always proven by your actions, every time.

“Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can do in a month. We overestimate what we can do in a year, and underestimate what we can accomplish in a decade." by Matthew Kelly from the book The Long View”
Here are 6 little things that you can do that can transform not only your day but your life.
- 1 Meditate on one verse for more than a few seconds… check in on it all day.
Yesterday my verse was “I am the Lord your God who heals you” EX. 15:26
- I got I am
- I got this is pre-cross, he has already healed me
- I got the understanding that there is a difference between being my God and being my Lord.
- 2 Pray for one person today more than just once.
-3 Serve one person today when it might seem inconvenient.
- 4 Say I love you to someone you wouldn’t necessarily say it to… and mean it.
-5 Stop and enjoy the moment.
-6 Challenge yourself to be thankful for 20 things everyday.
Today I drove to church and tried to complete a list of 100 things I was thankful for… I only got to about 80 because I would get so caught up in the great memories and feelings associated with my thankfulness.
My wife and I both collect change in jars… actually hers is a box. But every time we cash them out we underestimate how much is in there. It doesn’t seem like much but the value always astounds us. My change jar last time I was guessing had $40-$75… it had almost $175.

The formula for assumptions

2 Neighbors talking. One is a heart surgeon and one is a world famous mechanic who works on some of the fastest cars on earth. Why do you make so much?
We as humans have a strange obsession with thinking we know more than the other person… Now we may not know as much as a heart surgeon, yet we will second guess why they do what they do, how they do it, when they did it… We assume that if we knew as much as him we would do it differently.
Have you been president? No? then shut up.
People have become experts because they can type, fact check on the internet and hit enter.
Pressures no one knows.
My father from a large church talked about the pressures no one really understood.
130 plus staff members.
Trying to keep them all focused and in healthy relationships.
Dealing with Money
Dealing with the expectations of EVERYONE IN THE CHURCH
Keeping the church on track with the vision
THE RECIPE
What does it take to make an assumption?
Incomplete information
Others opinions
Your past experiences and expectations
Your own sense of self righteousness
Others skewed assumptions shared with you
Plus a lack of empathy and self awareness
We are so arrogant- myself included when we assume and second guess others. Jesus was judged by the pharisees on just about every move he made, word he said and deed he did.
But you know what the pharisees never did… they never took time to know him. Its so much easier to judge then to jaw with them.
Believe it or not it was the Fonz (Henry Winkler) who said assumptions are the termites of relationships.
Here is your test, get to know those who you don’t like. Pray for those you don’t like, ask God to bless those you don’t like. IF you have an assumption about someone- stop right there and get to know them.
You want to assume something… assume that satan loves to plant seeds of judgement and assumptions because they grow into hate and apathy and they multiply at an incredible rate - did you just hear that?
Why? Because lies multiply and thats all assumptions are… they are lies we tell ourselves.
The truth rests on a solid foundation… Assumptions are like tribbles…
And finally You no longer care about the persons soul… you only care about their faults.
You know the saying “when you assume you make an ass out of you and me”. Well thats the real problem- we have no fear whatsoever if we malign someone else’s reputation… we don’t mind making someone else look like an ass.
Would Jesus?

You asked for the best, you got the best. The hottest band in the world…. KISS!
KISS - Keep it simple stupid
Victor Marx - how to block a punch.
You ever hear the saying “he doesn’t have 30 years of experience, he just has one year of experience that he has repeated for 30 years. Many Christians are like that. Christians for years… but only a few years of growth under their belt.
2 Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Grow - You gotta do the basics to grow. Plant, water harvest. Read pray and obey.
Grace and knowledge - The greek is not decisive here in this context. It does not render the coupling of the subjective and the objective together… whuh?
What I am trying to say is the literal translation says grow in grace knowledge.
Grace here means being governed by the power of the Holy Spirit. The empowerment to live free of sin and not just the grace that saves us.
Working knowledge from experience.
You work out, you build muscle and you learn how to train your body better, you learn nutrition, you learn new exercises… and ultimately everyone notices. “wow that dude is built, wow he is strong, wow he knows how to train”. This is the same way for us spiritually.
Glorify him - MGLG
We as men want to look good. We know how to posture…
I went to the store today… oh yea? I stored up Gods word in my heart.
Until eternity - its never ending, the rest of your life.
Peter started his letter saying the same thing 1:5
Our Christian walk is about the basics.
It starts and ends with the basics.
But let me throw you one more curve ball. The verse just before 18 (yes that would be verse 17… I know Im pretty smart) says this.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.
This is saying it is not just about the basics, but it is about knowing (being forwarded) about what areas you may be attacked)
Its a simple question we need to ask our selves on a regular basis. If satan was going to attack me, where would his best shot be taken…i.e. where am I most weak.
Marriage, porn, money, Relationships, fatherhood, discipline,
Start your basics there.

There will be Blood... and bones

Bone marrow fights infections, heals wounds
- Bone marrow is rich in stem cells that can grow into other specific cells for healing all areas of the body.
- Bone marrow produces the blood
Luke 22: 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
A blood covenant
Hebrews 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Gods blood covenant
Proverbs 3:8 (verses 1-7 about listening to Gods word)
It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
*Refreshment GK - marrow to your bones
You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bones shall flourish like the grass; and the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants, and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.
Again this chapter is talking about hearing and doing Gods word
A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
Again hearing and doing Gods word
The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the bones.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The word of God gets into your bones and strengthens you.
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
When Christ was on the cross they did not break his bones… as prophesied.
prophetically in Psalms 34:20: “He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.”
Our bones are the source of our blood physically,
But it strikes me as almost a spiritual picture as well of God saying… The source of my sons blood will never be interfered with.
It will always flow freely spiritually to cleanse, forgive, heal, set free, release and enter into his kingdom
- Practice communion - you don’t need to have church to have communion
- Read scripture - feast on it
- Speak life into your heart, mind, body and spirit.

What makes you happy?
It depends on what happens… thus the word Happy coming from the word happenstance.
Money does not make you happy…
Many of the most miserable people are wealthy beyond measure.
Happiness is so important to us as Americans that it is actually in our Declaration of Independence. As you know, it states that among other things, we as Americans are "endowed by [our] Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
6 happiness tools - “what happy people know, by Dan Baker PHD
1. Appreciation is the first and most powerful tool at being happy. Can you learn to appreciate.
2. Choice, it is the father of freedom and the voice of choice. Having no choices leads to depression loneliness and ultimately learned helplessness.
3. Personal power. This is the most indefinable proactive force similar to character that gives you power over your feeling and over fate. Personal power has two components a. taking personal responsibility by taking action.
4. Lead with your strengths. Most people when pressured focus on their weakness, which cycles out of control.
5. The power of language and stories. We don’t describe the world we see, we see the world we describe. Language as the single most fundamental force of the human intellect has the power to alter perception. We think in words and these words have the power to limit us or to set us free. They can frighten us or evoke our courage. Similarly the stories we tell ourselves eventually become our life. We can tell healthy or horror stories the choice is ours.
6. Multi dimensional living. There are three primary components of life relationships health and purpose. Most people focus on only one of these. The 5 happiness traps are: trying to buy it, trying to find it in pleasure, by trying to resolve the past, by trying to over come weakness, trying to force it. “what happy people know, by Dan Baker PHD
But here is the real secret…
The Body can experience Pleasure
The Soul can experience Happiness
The Spirit can experience Joy
Don’t confuse these.

1 or 1000 you're still lonely

One is the loneliest number…
One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody. Mother Theresa
Loneliness almost seems impossible today even in a world were we are told right now to be isolated and protect our health. We can be surrounded by dozens of people daily, and even come home to family and still feel lonely. IN fact with social media we can have thousands of friends and interact with hundreds daily and still be lonely. In fact with all the ways we should seemingly be over friended and over appreciated and known, it actually makes it seem worse. The idea of “how could I be lonely with all the people around me in my life”. The truth is we are lonely when we don’t feel like people really take the time to get to know us.
And the same goes for us not taking time to get to know others.
WE can become lonely for many reasons. We may grow up distancing ourselves from others for protection (having been hurt earlier in our lives) and so it is safe, and we are in control and then we just learn how to let people know only our front page… and we hide the 15 chapters behind the our front cover.
The truth is that the people who can self adjust and realign to a healthy balance are the ones who have the most healthy relationships around them. Some are deep, some are friendly, some are casual but they are all healthy.
But today it’s not about your loneliness it is about those you come in contact with daily. How can you be one of those healthy relationships that others count on for stability and balance.
Practice vulnerability.
Don’t be afraid that some people might look at you differently due to your own failures, foibles and fears. That is what makes you memorable and endearing. I don’t want a friend that seemingly has it all together and no struggles. I want angst, pain and some questions -at least from their past so they can relate to me.
*don’t hesitate to share your stories, they will strengthen others around you.
Practice listening.
I would challenge you to go into the next 4 conversations and only ask questions. Try to feel what the other person is saying and continue to use your body language to express to them that you are listening. I can’t tell you how many times I simply listen to others and they tell me what a great conversation we had. Well… WE didn’t speak- They spoke, but because I listened they felt like they were important -so important that they felt like I said a lot in my attempt to care by listening.
There is a young man at a store where they have greeters. I met him walking in about 2 years ago. I always made it a habit to talk to him. He has MS and his speech is a little hard to pick up on- and his body looks like the gymnast who lands and then bobbles the landing and twerks a little… except his body does it constantly. But over time we have had some great conversations- in fact we have become friends. I will sit in the front and talk to him for 10-20 minutes. He loves music and so do I. He goes to a lot of concerts… I go to concerts and we talk. A few months ago it was a slow day and we were talking a long time … in the middle of nowhere he says “I want to thank you for treating me like a real person, like a friend”.
Heres a guy who sits at a door and has maybe a 1000 people walk by him daily and in his own words admits he is lonely.
Let us as men change the culture of loneliness by reaching out to those around us.
Jesus cried out “Father Father why have you forsaken me… He knew the ultimate loneliness. He more than anyone understands how important it is that we never leave anyone alone no matter how many friends they may have.

A farmer asked the owner of a local restaurant if he would be able to use a million frog legs. The proprietor asked where he could find so many frog legs. "There's a pond at home just full of them," he replied. "They drive me crazy night and day." After they had made an agreement for several hundred frogs, the farmer returned home. He came back a week later with two scrawny frogs and a foolish look on his face. "I guess I was wrong," he stammered. There were just two frogs in the pond, but they sure we're making a lot of noise." Next time you hear a lot of noise, remember, it may just be a couple of croakers.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
If you tried to pass off a letter to me saying it was my wife’s… I would be able to tell. If you tried to fake her voice over the phone I would be able to tell immediately. I have spent almost 40 years with this woman… I know her, her vocabulary, her intentions, her inflections, her attitude towards me…
The more time you spend with God the more you can cut through the voices that are not his- and then you just focus on his voice and ignore the rest.
As a kid we had a ventriloquist come and perform at our Kids church. I was mesmerized. I couldn’t believe this puppet could talk. After the service I went up and held the puppet, just waiting for it to talk to me… not a word. Where were the voices coming from? It’s a great question to ask yourself in todays world.
