HAPPINESS
Income, Poverty, Wealth, Happiness, Money
Economists and psychologists have spent decades studying the relation between wealth and happiness, and they have generally concluded that wealth increases human happiness when it lifts people out of abject poverty and into the middle class but that it does little to increase happiness thereafter. Americans who earn $50,000 per year are much happier than those who earn $10,000 per year, but Americans who earn $5 million per year are not much happier than those who earn $100,000 per year. People who live in poor nations are much less happy than people who live in moderately wealthy nations, but people who live in moderately wealthy nations are not much less happy than people who live in extremely wealthy nations. Economists explain that wealth has “declining marginal utility,” which is a fancy way of saying that it hurts to be hungry, cold, sick, tired, and scared, but once you’ve bought your way out of these burdens, the rest of your money is an increasingly useless pile of paper.
Stumbling on Happiness, Daniel Gilbert, pg. 239
So if its not about money what is life about? I will give you 3 takeaways for today that if you can latch onto will steer you well. None of these are earth shattering… unless you don’t practice them… then it can definitely rattle your world.
What happens if today you find out you have heart disease? You have cancer? You have MS, you are obese? You realize in seconds how fragile life is and how much our health determines the quality of life. Not the length … but definitely the quality.
HEALTH
THE WORLD BELONGS TO THE ENERGETIC... Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am happier when i am healthy… aren’t you? I plan on being around for another 60 years so I need to take care of my body in order to be of value.
What are you doing to invest in your health?
Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Whats your temple look like? How you keeping it?
Speaking of health… Humor is great health.
Scripture tells us the a merry heart doth good like a medicine. Prov. 17:22
Medicine: the cure. It takes care of what ails you. Every get stressed out and and after hanging out with your buddies life is just better?
When I had my first colonoscopy… they found some polyps and a few seconds later found a huge tumor… My humor got me through this.
When I had liver cancer my doctor said I have about 5 years to live 50/50… my good friend said thats awesome… that means you have a 100% chance to be alive for the next 2 1/2.
Do you wait for humor? Do you wait for laughter? Don’t - make it happen. Get around the people who make you laugh, watch comedies, tell jokes etc… don’t wait to laugh it is too important in your life.
Holiness
Holiness means set apart. What that means is not perfect, but rather we see the true state of our heart and our nature and we realize how much we need God. We need him to set us apart.
It is incredibly freeing and life giving to know you are set a part for God for a purpose for eternity. You can live life free… set a part, holy as you were meant to be. Ever have a ball and chain? Imagine carrying that for years… and than having yourself set apart from it. Aahhh life is like this?
Danger in the Christian walk is when we forget the feeling of being set a part. When we feel like we fit in… that is not a good thing. God help me stand out and be set a part.
The people I have seen with the best attitudes, the most amount of joy and the biggest love for life have these 3 qualities.
I can name a hundred people right now who don’t have a lot of money, they are not famous, they are not talented, they are not super Christians, they may not even have the best families… but they are happy because they have health, humor and holiness.

It’s not the big things you do that change your life, it’s not the little things you do that change your life… its the things you do consistently that change your life.
Phil and I had traveled together and spoken as a team for over 20 years… People have called us great, we have won some awards, we have gained some national attention… But in that time we have seen hundreds of people come and go in the arena of motivational speaking (especially in the area of speaking to students) We came to realize that we may not actually be the best, but we are consistent and that makes us stand out more than being the best.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
God never changes… maybe that is his biggest secret of success.
I have spent a lot of time interviewing the top people of the world, and truthfully, most of them are not that much more impressive than many of their peers. they are just a little bit better, but they’ve been just a little bit better year after year after year for quite a while. That gives them more than a little edge on the competition!
B. Eugene Griessman
The power behind consistency is that you are consistently doing the right thing.
So first is to analyze what you are doing… will it be the best in the long run?
One of my favorite quotes is simply this: if your consequences were immediate would you do that?
Eat a twinkie… overweight
Look at porn… divorce
Smoke a cigarette… cancer
It would sure clear up some bad choices in a hurry wouldn’t it!
So ask yourself “what am I doing?”
Define, refine and align
Define your choices
Refine your choices
Align your choices with the outcome you want
AND STAY CONSISTENT!

Bench Squat Jump Discipleship

Lets say you have a gym and you put some new equipment in it. Then even more equipment, and more cool stuff, and then better stuff etc… pretty soon you no longer have a gym- you have a warehouse.
What if you went back to just a squat rack, bench and a jumprope.
The basics.
The main thing is keeping the main thing the main thing.
You have goals, passions, pursuits, family… they are all good BUT THEY ARE NOT THE MAIN THING.
The relationship with God is the main thing…
If you are good with God he fuels the rest. Family- he gives you that advice and patience when you want to throw you kid across the room.
The job? God gives you insight in how to handle the new project.
The Passion… God says wait on that new boat… and you are given one later in the year.
The basics are fundamental to long term success and should never be taken for granted.
Vince Lombardi expounded on the basics… every year he would start his speech to his team by saying this is a football… he hammered basics to the point of saying even if the other team knows what we are doing, we will be so good at it, they still will not be able to stop us.
John Wooden again the greatest basketball coach in the history of the game expounded the basics… to the point of getting his guys on the floor of the court and teaching them how to tie their shoes.
But what are the basics to the main thing: What are the bench, squat rack and jump rope in discipleship?
READ, PRAY and OBEY.
CHURCH LIFE IS important… but when you can’t meet at church, bible study, classrooms, prayer groups etc…
You stick to the basics.
This quarantine has truly left me with just a bench, squat rack and a jump rope. It has cut out the riffraff and the non essentials. Which has been good.
So here you are: your bible, a notebook and some time to pray. Take advantage of it, listen to God and obey his voice!

The Formula for Success does not equal the formula for success.

Shout out to Uncle Rog my tattoo guy at Guns’N Needles tattoo in Minneapolis. My wife makes a cinnamon cake that is madly delicious and it is her own secret formula. I gave it to Rog and he wanted it… BAD! For his mama. So he talked to her and we cut a deal on sharing secret formulas/recipes with each other. Sweet and sour Hawaiian chicken.
What is your secret sauce? Your secret formula for success?
When do you fire at your highest level of achievement?
What gets you there?
It is a tricky question because if and when I answer it you will want to copy it if you don’t already have one.
I have a friend who needs lots of time alone, he needs heady theological books, he bikes long distance, his wife and he spend hours making candles and crafts, he loves to listen to the bible on his iPod and he works out stuff on paper. He is great on a team but not as the leader. He can spend hours talking things through and thinks everyone should have a say. He loves to work from 1pm till 11pm… AND HE IS VERY SUCCESSFUL, his motto is it will all work out.
*if I tried to live his life? I would fail miserably and I would go crazy… first off what man makes candles… and rides a bike? My bike is a motorcycle.
But we do it right? We hear a sermon on giving and a guy says God told me to give my whole check to the missions in Africa and God blessed me and I received 5x’s as much the next month. AND WE WANT TO COPY THE FORMULA.
Look, life is not like making coke a’cola. That has a secret formula… but you have to find out your own secret formula for success.
Here is how I make sure I have created the environment to accomplish life at its highest degree for me.
Here are the things that go into my secret formula. I have to read books on leadership, psychology, business and entrepreneurship. I don’t read hardly if any spiritual books. But I read a ton of the Bible every day.
I pray on average 2 hours a day.
I need people and lots of activity.
I get more done being busy than having time on my hands.
I need to work out because it challenges me.
I need to talk things out to myself and not write them out.
I am most creative alone and you will only slow me down.
I know what I do best with my wife and it is 1-2 hours a day just hanging out on our computers, reading or watching a movie.
I have to be the leader, I work best early in the morning until 11am and late at night like 10pm-1am. and I am worthless from 2-4pm which is why I work out sometime during that spot.
I keep tons of lists all over the place and I journal a lot.
My Mantra is Make God Look Good.
Look there is no shortage on how to be a success articles and books and podcasts… they are all probably good and usable to some degree… but they are not YOUR formula for success. Because only you can know it, tweak it and work it.
Years ago I was asked to come and be a part of a conference for youth workers from around the country. It was put on by a pretty famous psychiatrist and she was looking for all of us to come together and learn and work through her material called “The 12 things your student doesn’t know and needs to”. After the first full day she would ask all of us to get into groups and write out ways to bring life to the presentation, ideas, stories, games and etc… I sat in a group for about 10 minutes and about lost my mind. I just simply excused myself and went and sat alone. The Good doctor came up to me sweetly and assumed I was just simply working on my own stuff and not hers. I explained to her I work best in these scenarios alone. She challenged me and I said “why don’t you let me work today alone and if is not up to your standards I will gladly work with a group the rest of the week”. That week everyone after the meeting wanted to go out and eat, see a movie, just chill… I didn’t. I knew I had to keep my environment in order to stay at a high level of production. At the end of the week she came up to me and said “I have looked over your input and I am using all of it exclusively for the book and I would like you to help me with an audio version”.
WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD TRIED TO KEEP OTHERS SUCCESS PLAN?
If you read as much as I do you will quickly learn that every successful leader has principles they live by and they are all very similar but the application is always different than others and they have tailor made it for themselves.
An interview of over 5000 successful business leaders revealed some major characteristics.
- They all knew they had a greater calling than most
- They all knew they needed to be rich
- They all read lots of books
- They all believed they were different from others
- They all had huge dreams and goals
- The all had no fear of failure
but the one thing the survey showed beyond a doubt… they all lived these out in their daily lives dramatically different.
3 John 1:2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
any and of every kind that will create the whole/success. Find out what ways work best for you.

Have you ever had a hero let you down?
You not only see him fail you,
but you watch his slow demise…
**We see it all the time in sports… incredible talent, maybe even gives shout out to God… and you watch him become a baseless carnal human being. Selfish and a shell of who you thought he would be.
WORSE YET… WHEN ITS A PASTOR.
A very big influence on my life… a pastor who I listened to all the time… THE MEGA CHURCH… and you find out and hear about the slow fall… the descending debacle.
1 Sam. 10: 6 At that time the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person.
- 9 As Saul turned and started to leave, God gave him a new heart, and all Samuel’s signs were fulfilled that day.
- 27 But there were some scoundrels who complained, “How can this man save us?” And they scorned him and refused to bring him gifts. But Saul ignored them.
But he held his peace.--Literally, he was a deaf man, acting as though he had not heard the murmurs.
1 Samual 11
12 Then the people exclaimed to Samuel, “Now where are those men who said, ‘Why should Saul rule over us?’ Bring them here, and we will kill them!”
13 But Saul replied, “No one will be executed today, for today the Lord has rescued Israel!”
Saul gives God the credit…
*Later we see the insecurity in Saul - had to know what everyone was saying about him.
The wheels fall off to the point where he disobeys god, lies to the prophet and builds his own statue!
You want to talk about a rise and fall… it was more like a ricochet than a curve. 2
Notice how Saul and David start out
Saul - head and shoulders above everyone
David - a boy, a runt
Saul - good looking
David - a Red head kid
Saul - humble quiet
David - Loud and brash
Saul - insecure at the core
David - empowered at the core
Saul - did not want the office
David - did want the office
Saul - Fought to keep the throne
David - waited on God to give him the throne.
So How did Saul fall?
Being followers of X should be confirmed by our obedience to his word and voice.
SELF RELIANCE arrogance
As Saul grows more desperate to hold on to power
*He takes things into his own hands (without Gods direction… that is the difference)
Of all the human failings that can destroy a person
or a business,
OR A FAMILY
or a future
arrogance/self reliance is the deadliest.
It is the most readily acquired,
the easiest to justify
and the hardest to recognize in ourselves. Arrogance can infect all FAMILY -
company and employees
A SPORTS TEAM
AND EVEN CHURCH - with the silent destructiveness of a computer virus.
WE HEAR STORIES ABOUT BLOCKBUSTER…
bankrupt - netflix 28 Billion
Arrogance….
But how many relationships are bankrupt because someone does not see their arrogance?
GODS WORK MUST BE GOVERNED
Saul had been given a new heart… but it turned from a heart for God to a selfish Unbelief, self reliance, disobedience = his fatal flaw.
Matt. 6:33 seek ye first the kingdom of God
SEEK YE
The man with the garden given to him…
“you are absolutely right… but just between you and me-you should have seen it when it was just Gods”.

Whats the most important thing in life?
Your mind.
Did you know that just by thinking of eating a piece of delicious apple pie you can spike your insulin, your mouth can begin to water and you can actually taste sweetness in your mouth.
Charles Swindoll, the highly acclaimed teacher and author, put it this way:
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do... I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you... We are in charge of our attitudes.
My son who had anxiety issues early on in life…
Think of the lottery…
Its hard to have a positive attitude when your inner dialogue is negative.
So how do you have a positive attitude?
Quite simple: you don’t change your mindset to everything is going to be great…
You change it to hope… hope in God, hope in Christs word, You build hope from what you have seen God do in the past.
A hopeful mindset is a positive mindset
You speak hope to those you meet.
You take time daily to note good things.
If things don’t go well then you always chalk it up to a learning experience.
Hang with positive people
Read inspiring stories
Walk in to every room building situation with a huge smile like you own the place.
Choose humor when things don’t work out
Choose joy
Choose perseverance
Choose your attitude… don’t let the weather choose it, your bank account, your friends, your marriage,
Is your negative attitude making life better or worse?
You work and save and buy an amazing sports car… would you let anyone drive it?
Your mind is even more valuable… don’t let anyone crappy mindset drive it.
Phil. 4:8 Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.
Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”
The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”
Im to busy
I don’t have the talent
I don’t have the resources
I don’t have the intelligence
The problem is too big
The problem is our excuses are based on faulty thinking. What do I mean? Well changing peoples lives or at least influencing them happens in powerful ways… but very subtle. We confuse powerful with big, loud, massive colossal magical moments… These are so rare they should not even be considered. The greatest influence is subtle.
You have heard me say this before, but you don’t learn a southern accent, you slowly align to it from a subtle influence. The same holds true by how you change someones life. Be around them and love Jesus and love them.
Think of Jesus… his goal was to change the whole world. So what did he do? He chose 12 men, one which was a traitor. He spent only 3.5 years with them. He left them confused, wondering and in doubt….
What was the difference? He empowered them with the Holy Spirit and taught them the power of focusing on one at a time.
Even when Jesus ministered in the crowds, he focused mostly on the single individual. What if Jesus said “I can do this miracle, but there is not a big enough crowd”. Or I can do this miracle but it won’t really mean much to this person - they are not of influence. Or I could do this miracle or serve this person, but it is a minor little thing that will have no difference on history.
You sir - yes you who is listening has the chance to change one persons life… you may not know who, you may not know when, you may not know how - but you keep serving people and loving Jesus and watch what happens.
I had a conversation with a traveling evangelist about a time he came and spoke at our camp…. he said I was getting ready to leave and quit the ministry, until you spoke into my life!
Can you change everyones life? NOPE, but can you change 1? Absolutely. Go for it.

RACE
Several years ago (1979 we believe), as a hundred thousand fans watched, Richard Petty ended his 45-race losing streak and picked up stockcar racing's biggest purse-$73,900. It all happened at the Daytona 500. Petty's win, however, was a complete surprise. Going into the last lap, he was running 30 seconds behind the two leaders (Allison and Yarbourgh). All at once the car in second place tried to pass the No. 1 man on the final stretch. This caused the first car to drift inside and force the challenger onto the infield grass, and slightly out of control. What happened next was incredible. The offended
driver pulled his car back onto the track, caught up with the leader, and forced him into the outside wall. Both vehicles came to a screeching halt. The two drivers jumped out and quickly got into an old-fashioned slugging match. In the meantime, third-place Petty cruised by for the win. Petty wasn’t even supposed to be racing… against Doctors orders he had just had part of his stomach removed from an ulcer… but you don’t give up, you don’t quit - good things will happen.
When Jesus said the first shall be last…
Matthew 20:16 The parable of the farmer who hires some laborers and late in the day finds some more laborers standing around… He asks why are you standing here? Because no one has hired us. Jesus hires them and they only work a few hours…. but they all get payed. The ones who worked the full day get mad. Jesus straightens out the mess but then says this…In the same way the first shall be last the the last shall be first.
**maybe the last will be first only because they just kept persevering. When no one hired them in the morning, they hung around waiting, not giving up… Jesus is saying in the long run I will honor those who don’t give up.
A woman was showing a friend her new baby The friend said ”she’s beautiful “ the mother exclaimed “this is nothing you should see her picture”.
Victory, success, spiritual depth, winning, anointing whatever you want to call it in life and the Christian walk- it can very easily seem like it supposed to be easy.
Social media makes it look easy…
Mark 5:24 Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. 25 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. 26 She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
You know what I see in this story? Yes Jesus is powerful and merciful and heals the woman… but I see a woman who never gave up. Who had a need and kept trying everything until she came in contact with Jesus. Keep doing whatever you need to do in order to come into contact with Jesus.
I was in prayer a few years ago and felt like I was praying to the wall. I kept pushing in and saying God send a revival… and he spoke so clear and said “create your own revival” I asked how… he said “just keep pushing in”. And I did… and nothing happened… but I kept pushing in and in just a few short weeks I had one of the greatest moves of God in my life ever.

What do you do when you are bored? Read, watch tv, Netflix, exercise, cook, mess around in the garage, work in the yard, sit at your computer…
I know something even better… no not sex. I know one thing that makes everything better… but its also the one thing that most people don’t want you to do.
webstix.com Tony Herman - the coolest cat on the net
I want to be practical today. We are all quarantined and maybe bored (I am not- lots of books to read and write) but I hear about it from many.
What makes everything better? Creativity.
Gods creativity: God created us a new creation.
We are in the image of God: which means we have his creative gene. It is in our DNA
we tend to think that creativity is details and complex and multiple thoughts and ideas multiplied and mixed…
The most creative ideas are simple.
The most creative people keep it simple.
Now that doesn’t mean there won’t be a lot of steps to make it happen, but the idea itself and the creativity itself is simple. You want to be thought of as creative? Make things simple. The upside down ketchup bottle… why did that take 100 years to invent. I always open up my protein jug and wonder why they don’t just put a little scooper clip/sleeve on the inside of the cap. So the scoop is always right where you want it. Simple, easy, probably some steps to take to reset the molds to do that - so yes there are some details, but a great idea and simple. And yes its my idea!
IDEAS
How to Kill Ideas
(In 7 words or less)
1. Don't be ridiculous
2. It costs too much
3. That's beyond our responsibility
4. We don't have the time
5. We're too small for it
6. We've never done it before
7. We'll be the laughing stock
8. You're 2 years ahead of your time
9. Can't teach an old dog new tricks
10. We're doing the best we can
11. Has anyone else ever tried it?
12. We tried that before
13. It can't be done.
14. It's too radical a change
15. That's not our problem
16. It isn't in the budget
17. We did all right without it
18. We're not ready for that
19. Too hard to sell
20. Let's get back to reality
21. It won't work in our industry
22. If it was good - we'd already be doing it
My favorite: people will never go for it
How do I know God not only made us creative but also trusts our creativity? He gave Adam and Eve the right to name the animals. Creation starts with creativity in the hands of man… and Not just a few, but all of them… and they nailed it.

My pillow guy lights it up for Jesus. Michael Lindell
Flyte nutrition - Vita California, great taste great sales, great mission and vision. If you own a company and want to see how someone does it right using their platform for Jesus, just order something from them just to experience the presentation.
I had a group of kids driving to a inner city missions trip. Before we got down into the city we were in a very wealthy neighborhood. We stopped at a convenient store and as I was walking out, I stopped to put a receipt in my fanny pack (it was the 80’s bro) and I put my big gulp cup on the roof of the car next to me… I didn’t see what kind of car it was I was just trying to get some extra hands free. A man and his wife came out and he storms up to me swearing a blue streak… get your blankety blank cup off my car - I quickly apologized but he wouldn’t let up… so I finally spoke up quite loudly… I thought you owned this car… he was confused and with a wince said “I do own this car”. I replied “funny…it seems to own you”. His wife about lost it… he fumed into his car and sped off.
Mark 10
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[d]”
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
Did you give up everything? I didn’t…
Can you imagine you go to church, you like it, you become a member and on Monday morning the pastor shows up to take all your stuff?
But actually thats not what it’s really asking. What it is asking is are you willing to give everything to God: dreams, hopes, aspirations, your job, your talents, your giftings, your expectations, your goals, Your marriage, your future
I heard a very wealthy business man who loved God preach a sermon at CFNI where I first went to Bible college. He said he had given everything to God but always wanted to drive a Mercedes. Money was not the problem… he could buy a 100 Mercedes… but he wanted to make sure it didn’t offend God. So he prayed about it and God said you can buy it as long as you keep a for sale sign in the glove box. he understood immediately what God meant.
…
tool or idol
If it’s gods its a tool, if its mine it is an idol.
How many times personal CD player, an expensive larave guitar, musical equipment, my car etc… I tell people you can borrow it, it’s not mine. Whuh??? It’s Gods.
So verse 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
WHAT DOES THIS REALLY MEAN? Jesus is saying the rich have a lot more to give up then the poor… that makes it harder for them to be completely committed to Christ- but thats the goal.
Think of your stuff as anchors. The more stuff you have the more anchors you have locking you into a mindset that is tied up on the earths values and not the Fathers heart.
One last thought… if you live in the US, you are rich!
