When I was a kid my sisters tried to convince me I was adopted… It almost worked. Whats the hardest thing you have had to believe about your family?
Jesus is the Messiah… and thousands of people are following him… but not his family.
How hard was that for him? For his family?
John 7:5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Don’t give up believing and praying for those closest to you that have a hard time believing in who Christ is. You are not in charge of finishing the story.

Lets talk about the weather!
Gods word is quoted from the OT over 855 times from almost every book in the NT from almost every author. Because they all believed in the power of Gods word.
Everyone of them said “it is written…
Matthew 4:4 Jesus said it is written… when being tempted… he said it in faith trusting Gods word.
Gods word has immense power. If you know it, believe it and use it.
Here is the ultimate example.
But did you know Satan said it in false… the opposite of faith is not fear it is false. It is trusting in the power of Gods word but using it in the wrong context- in a false context. Why? Because even satan understood the power of Gods word.
Matthew 4: and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
So if you trust the weatherman…
And the apostles trusted Gods word
and Jesus trusted Gods word
And even satan trusted in the authority of Gods word EVEN WHEN USED OUT OF CONTEXT…
Don’t you thing you should be able to trust Gods word?

THERE ARE LOTS OF HEARERS…
The ones who church shop
The ones who listen to all the Xn podcasts
The ones who listen to all the worship music
The ones who go to all the conferences
The ones who hope to move in the supernatural
The ones who run to hear prophetic words
The ones who want to argue their theology
Where are the Doers?
We all know the armchair quarterbacks in all areas of life.
sports. Politics. Relationships. Money. Business. Spiritual life.
**IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK THIS IS HOW THIS VERSE BREAKS DOWN.
This verse is bursting with meaning in the greek.
Jesus says - this one hearer is the best.
The one who listens - ever listen and not hear
Hears - seeks to understand it
You get on a plane and they give you the run down on the oxygen mask… but what if they flight before they were employed and you are now using the same plane… You will listen to the detail.
Exercises care with it - How can I apply this to my life
Observes it - am I doing it in every area of my life?
Again getting on a plane - CIA friend asks me if I would help on a flight if they needed me? I got on the plane and with intense observation checked everyone out.
Obeys it - am I doing it when it is hard
Does not violate it - am I changing the meaning to make it easier for me?

DEMONS… EVERYONE LIKES A GOOD DEMON STORY… OH I HAVE A FEW GOOD ONES… BUT HOW DO YOU HANDLE DEMONS… HEY GARTH IS THIS WHERE WE ARE GOING TODAY?…. NOPE NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Part uno
Luke 11:
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Jesus has got them in the palm of his hand.
He is performing miracles. He casts out a demon and a possessed man is free and talking.
We are talking about demon possession in this chapter. Christ is revealing some amazing insights to what happens when someone becomes demon possessed and what happens when you cast a demon out of someone. People are riveted to every word. They are for sure definitely thinking of people they know who have been possessed and set free and then they become worse…
AND WITH THAT A WOMAN CRIES OUT…
“Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.
Invited to a meal by a friend who is raving about their cooking skills. After 45 minutes of waiting he brings out whip cream…
Where is the steak? Asparagus, red potatoes, duck, lamb, veal, little wax beans and peppers, hey even a frozen pizza…
BUT YOU ALL EXCITED ABOUT WHIP CREAM.
WHIP CREAM?
Not a meal… but whip cream.
“Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.
LUKE 10:18 I SAW SATAN FALL LIKE LIGHTENING…
BETTER TO HAVE YOUR NAME IN THE BOOK OF LIFE
Blessed are those who “know how to obey Gods word and keep this from happening”.
*This is a mild and loving rebuke.
There is a business man who was raised in a Christian home. He loves God and has a soft spot for Church and worship. He raised his kids to love God and go to church and he even has a daughter in missions. Now in his late 50’s he still wonders why he has never felt like he has true depth in his walk. He still occasionally looks at porn, still has some hard times with his attitude and being the husband and father he knows he should be, has a temper and still sarcastic. and has felt left behind by many of his friends who now seem to be deeper in their walk with Christ.
Sermons are great - but they are no better than diet books if you don’t eat right.
Sermons are great - but they are no better than audio books on relationships if you still argue and quarrel with your spouse
Sermons are great - but they are no better than reading up on the newest and best stocks if you can’t save enough money to invest.

LAZARUS
Undeniably, Reliably Dead!
In the musical, The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s house is swept up by a monstrous
tornado. When her house finally sets down, we discover it has landed on the
wicked witch of the west who has been terrorizing the residents of Munchkin
City. The witch looks dead, but before the celebration of their good
fortune can begin, death must be verified beyond any shadow of doubt. The
mayor of the city says to Dorothy, “As the mayor of Munchkin City, in the
county of the land of Oz, I welcome you most regally. But we’ve got to
verify it legally, to see if she is morally, ethically, spiritually,
physically, absolutely, positively, undeniably, and reliably dead!”
When Martha goes out to meet Jesus, there is no doubt. Lazarus is morally,
ethically, spiritually, physically, absolutely, positively, undeniably, and
reliably dead.
Jef Olson. "Resurrection Rehearsal: The Lazarus Story"
I don’t know how Lazarus died, but I know why. He died because Jesus wanted him to die… what?
More importantly and more accurately he died because Jesus wanted the credit.
Lets read. John 11:41-44
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
What do you have that is dead… Why not make sure its absolutely dead. i.e. there is no way you can in any way shape or form bring it back to life. Now ask Jesus to do what only he can do!
Lazarus was not only dead, he was wrapped up, bound and in a hardshell of caked on perfume and lard. He was dead and gone and hardened like a clot of blood.
What is dead in your life, not just dead, but dead and gone. Dead, wrapped up, over with, gone and never to be raised again? Why not let Jesus have control over it and ask him to take all the credit!
You will be amazed at what comes back to life if you are willing to give God the credit.

Marketing, branding and relationships

Ever buy something due to a commercial, you know some slick marketing and a cool jingle and then you get it and you hate it.
branding/marketing became necessary following the urban revolution in ancient Mesopotamia in the 4th century BCE, when large-scale economies started mass-producing commodities such as alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and textiles. These ancient societies imposed strict forms of quality control over commodities, and also needed to convey value to the consumer through branding. The idea was that you would only dare market if you had the highest of standards… WOW - a lot has changed.
I had a person come into my office years ago and he was pushing a multi level sales /marketing business (I could have my own business) he tried to really impress me by how much he respected me and cared for me - by telling me those exact words. He got my name wrong right off the start, so I would correct him each time. He said “Garett”…. I said my name is Gareth… then he would say Listen Garen… I would correct him with a different name “my name is Garen it is Garf… he was to busy respecting and caring for me to even catch on… pun intended. He tried so hard to market me he turned me off.
The book Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinmeier Hanson (Newest book It doesn’t have to be crazy at work I will provide the link)

A great little chapter on marketing is not a department.
Marketing is not a department
Do you have a marketing department? If not, good. If
you do, don't think these are the only people responsible
for marketing.
Accounting is a department. Marketing isn’t.
Marketing is something everyone in your company
is doing 24/7/365.
Just as you cannot not communicate, you cannot
not market:
Every time you answer the phone, it's marketing.
Every time you send an e-mail, it's marketing.
Every time someone uses your product, it's marketing.
Every word you write on your Web site is marketing.
If you build software, every error message
is marketing.
If you're in the restaurant business, the
after-dinner mint is marketing.
If you're in the retail business, the checkout counter
is marketing.
·If you're in a service business, your invoice
is marketing.
Recognize that all of these little things are more
important than choosing which piece of swag to throw
Into a conference goodie bag.Marketing isn't just a few individual events. its is the sum total of everything you do.
Your Christian walk isn’t just your Sunday church attendance, or just your attendance and your giving. It’s not just your attendance, giving and your small group bible study and your political view. It goes beyond your attendance, giving small group and beyond your reading and praying and memorization. Beyond your Christian music and christian bumper stickers.
Your Christian walk is (to steal their line) the sum total of everything you do. and in fact it is not a walk it is a lifestyle… maybe even more pointedly it is your life.
I was accused as a kid of being consumed with Barefoot waterskiing. I had a friend who said if you ask Garth his name he will say “Barefoot… barefoot waterskiing”. I loved it more than girls - truth. When My wife and I were dating and getting serious about the future, I wrote in a card I love you more than waterskiing and she knew at that moment this was getting serious.
Fast forward 34 years. I am hoping my life to those who do not have a relationship with Jesus is seen much like my waterskiing in the past. He is my life, it is not something I do.
*And isn’t that the problem - when it’s not who you are it’s a religion and that is the number one turn off. But when it’s your life… well that is a relationship with.
When I was 16 years old I got a job at Intervarsity Christian fellowship press. I was taught how to run a printing press. A big old huge monstrosity of a machine.
(my finger prints were around the world)
People should see Gods finger prints all over you life. How you respond to the clerk at the convenient store, your driving, your willingness to listen, your love for those you disagree with, the other political party, the games you play, the hobbies you keep the patience you have… your life should be Jesus, and Jesus should be your life.
I would hate to have to tell people about religion… but I love telling people about my relationship with Jesus.
John 13:34A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
The irony of this… do you catch it. Jesus came and despised the religious leaders of the day. They took the simple 10 commandments and turned them into over 600 additional commands - that is the heart of religion. Jesus hated religion.
and now he says “here is a new command… wait I thought commands were bad… Love one another… oh this is a command the disciples quickly realize can only be achieved by allowing Gods love to flow through you… it has to be a relationship to do this- not simply a command.

What is the purpose of meaning?
Tuesday May 19, 2020

Do you like philosophy?
To Crush, to annihilate a man utterly, to inflict on him the most terrible of punishment- so that the most ferocious murderer would shudder at it and dread it beforehand, one need only give him work of an absolutely, completely useless and irrational character.
A classic Garth Heckman moment… I recorded yesterdays podcast on distractions… I did it late the night before… I then ran up to my living room to post the podcast and social media but got distracted by the last episode of “The last Dance”.
I think once a man has a grasp on what his purpose is, is there a purpose to life and what is the purpose of life he is much more willing to push himself, work harder and take chances.
The most basic question in philosophy is “what is the purpose of life?”
But as Alber Camus points out there is even a more basic question than that. And that is…is there a purpose to life. You can’t answer what is the purpose of life until you for sure know there is a purpose to life.
In this quandary you must also then ask what is YOUR purpose in life.
So if there purpose to life? - most of us would agree yes there is: But now lies the litmus test- if yes, then what is it? And then in the microcosm - what is our purpose in light of the purpose of life.
Some say the steam engine was the greatest invention next to the computer in the last 200 years. It allowed a cheap, powerful way to travel all around the world.
So is there a purpose behind the steam engine: yes and that would be to harness huge amounts of power.
What is the purpose to that power? At first it was to travel and then Produce wealth through business applications.
And what was your purpose behind harnessing that power? You could travel as a missionary or business man or you could use it to run a steel mill - literally 1000’s of applications…
So you wrestle with is there purpose to life? What is the purpose of life? What is your purpose in life?
But the final and least obvious question to the purpose of your life is: Does it actually have meaning and not just purpose.
The answer is uniquely different to each and every listener… BUT
I am going to read a verse out of scripture and if you meditate on it and ask God to speak to you through it, you will find the answer. But you gotta really think about it and seek his guidance.
Matthew 6:33, 34
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

*Remember when your TV program was cut into for an emergency broadcast… then after a few minutes they would announce NOW BACK TO YOUR REGULAR SCHEDULED PROGRAM….
I hope you have had some time to unplug, to get somewhat recharged and back in tune with yourself.
BUT WE MIGHT FIND OURSELF THROWN BACK INTO A LIFE OF DISTRACTION!
SOME STATISTICS
- The average worker wastes 60 hours every month due to workplace distractions
- A third of employees are distracted at work for a total of up to three hours a day
- 56 Interruptions a day for the average employee
- 80% of interruptions at work are considered trivial
- 60% or less of work time is actually spent productively. Interruptions cause employees to take 27% more time to complete a task, commit up to twice as many errors and experience twice the anxiety.
lost work is costing American businesses upward of $650 billion per year, and it is leading to vicious cycles of employee dissatisfaction:
Distracted driving in the United States costs approximately $175 billion a year,
Distracted driving on average kills 3500 people a year,
Causing over 400,000 injuries
BUT THE BIGGEST COST OF DISTRACTION MIGHT BE…
*Distracted just by not hearing his voice can cost us eternal consequences and others lives depend on it.
1 Thess. 5:16-18
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
What does this mean truly?
Pray - be in tune with Jesus
In all circumstance - be ready at all times!
For this is the will of God - His will is for us not to live distracted.
Mary and Martha - Luke 10:38-42 – “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (NKJ)
Her distraction was identified by Jesus as anxiety.
- She was worrying about serving.
- Anxious about feeding everyone,
- Anxious about what everyone would think of her and her household if she didn’t do it well.
- Distracted by others expectations
- Distracted by outside influences (people from outside her home were coming)
What was the opposite of Martha? Mary!
She sat at Jesus feet,
She listened
She enjoyed and found rest in his words and company
“First, worry distracts us – When you worry, it keeps you from being fruitful. Worry is revealed by whatever stresses you out. It could be your bills, your health, your kids — whatever you fret about on a regular basis. Worry will keep you from serving God [as] you should because worry keeps you from growing in faith.
The Bible says, ‘Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you” (Psalms 55:2). The antidote to worry is trust. Give your worries to God.
“Second, greed distracts us – Greed can consume our lives and choke out our desire to live for God. I’ve met pastors who let their churches die because they were so busy traveling and speaking just to make more money. The Bible says we do ministry because we’re eager to serve God, not for what we can get out of it (1 Peter 5:2).
“Third, ‘pleasure of life’ can distract us – We need to maintain a balance. God wants us to have times of rest, including a weekly Sabbath; but is there any chance you’re spending too much time on hobbies? Or on pet projects that have become a hobby? Even overwork can become a ‘pleasure of life’ if you’re doing it because it makes you feel good and gets you praise from others. What is your motive? Are you maintaining a balance between work and recreation? Ask your family [members] and see what they have to say about how you spend your time.”
Paul writes about the Corinthian church being distracted about what we should eat and drink.
The focus is on staying in the presence of Jesus and his keeping his mission at the center of our lives.
1. “Our attention often runs to what’s important to us. So distraction can reveal what we love.”

Steve Jobs 10.2 billion, but most of his wealth came from his stock in Pixar not apple. And the surprising things about Steve is that he had by far way more failures than successes in life- and that is where we are headed today
Eccl. 11:5 As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
In the morning sow thy seed. Do not let your ignorance of the future and the inscrutability of God's dealings lead you to indolence and apathy; do your appointed work; be active and diligent in your calling.
And in the evening withhold not thine hand. Labor on untiredly from morn till evening.
2 Corinthians 9:6, "He which soweth sparingly," etc.
Columbus failed in most of the things that he tried for. He made a bad mistake at first in his reckonings. He never knew that he had not reached Asia. He looked for gold and wealth, but he died in poverty. Except that he proved that the earth was round, which had already been satisfactorily proved, everything turned out differently from what he thought. And yet we celebrate him as though he had completely succeeded.
WE don’t know what will be a success or failure in our lives. But sow your seed your good works your ideas your investments your ministry ideas your business plans. do it without hesitation and do it continually.
There is no such a thing as trivial seed in Gods eyes.
