What is the best excuse you have ever heard… I am sorry I am late, they did not have enough Trans Ams to buy so I had to wait until I could find more.
Some sheiks came over to stay in Dallas for a few weeks. One of the boys went out to buy some Trans Ams… as in 20 plus… That is why he was late.
For the most part excuses are simple ways to defer the truth. You know- Make it so I don’t have to own up to my mistakes.
Maybe you have heard of the term scapegoat. It actually comes from Leviticus in the old Testament. The priest would take two goats, one would be sacrificed for the sins of the people and the second one the priest would place his hands on it and speak over it all the problems, atrocities and hidden sins of the people. They would then lead that goat out to the wilderness… where it would most likely get eaten by a wild beast. It was the scapegoat for everyone.
Now thats taking excuses to the next level… blaming a goat!
My Buddy Phil and I have traveled around the world speaking to students. From grade schools, to college and then some… quite a few prisons… every juvey hall, every minimum or maximum prison we have spoken in - quite literally every kid had an excuse as to why they were there.
When studied psychologists have come up with the 3 basic excuses.
#1 Denial. I did not do it. Blatant lying - you are able to separate the truth from the act.
#2 It’s not my fault because… It is always someone else’s fault and you have plenty of reasons to back that up.
#3 I did it but… we then explain why surrounding circumstances made us look bad.
Proverbs 22:13 The fool says there is a lion outside I can’t go out.
Look one thing we know for sure is that excuses expose our character, or lack there of it.
We all know those guys who always have an excuse… you have heard me say “he who has an excuse will always find a philosophy to back it up”. We in the long run we do not like to be around people who make excuses… because honestly we do not like to be around men of lagging character.
In the same way we know men who make no excuses… they except blame and they except fame. They know who they are and they are willing to deal with it.
Here is the deal… we see it in others… don’t think that others don’t see it in you.
But here is the rub, every excuse we hold on to we are keeping ourselves from being worked on by the Holy Spirit. We can’t become more like Christ until we admit our excuses and allow his spirit into that once walled off area of our life. It used to say “only those who buy my excuse can enter here”…. not now it says “anyone can enter here”. That is when Jesus takes over!

Every father wants a better future for their family especially their kids than what they had. Even if you were an exceptional father you want better for your kids.
Prov. 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Eph. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Are you worth modeling?
What are the areas you need more training in?
Are you bringing your child up in the spirit of the law or the letter of the law?

Men have a hard time wrapping their heads around what love is outside of feelings or sexual arousal.
It makes it even more difficult when we as men hear “God loves you”. What does that really mean?
What is love? it is the ultimate perseverance to choosing what is best for the other person.
Gods love is the ultimate perseverance of wanting what is best for you regardless of how you treat him, how you live your life, the choices you make, the foolishness you choose, the lies you have lived, the promises you have broken, the sins you have committed again and again and again… He still perseveres in his love for you… in wanting what is best for you.
How long could you do that for others? Not very long I suppose… maybe a little longer for a son or daughter… but in time you might be one to give up, lose hope, walk away.
Gods Perseverance is Love
Gods Love is perseverance
Think of all the times you have grown the most as a man… I would bet it is because you made some mistakes and God chose to stick with you through it all.
Love is not easy if we think of it is a feeling… but what of it? what if we realize that love is simply persevering and choosing the best for that person all the while they slowly go through the process of learning from mistakes.

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body."Ephesians 5:21-30

Distorted thinking… what is it?
How does it happen to us?
Its like starting out life with a new mirror and you see your reflections clearly… but over time things cause the mirror to become distorted.
Words spoken over you from parents, friends, strangers
Experiences that were traumatic…
Hey man was on the plane when the captain interrupted and said hello my name is Capt. Smith we are flying at 30,000 feet and then all of a sudden he went on a Oh no oh no oh my Go.... He then came back on a minute later and said I'm sorry let me explain what just happened a flight attendant brought me and some coffee and spilled it all over my pants. You should see the mess on my pants. From the back of the plane someone yelled you should see the mess all over my pants!.
Most people learn how to live by watching most people.
James 5:13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

Jesus would never shame someone… really?
Luke 13
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”
15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”
17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
Luke 13:17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.
to curse vehemently
Usage: I shame, disgrace, bring to shame, put to utter confusion, frustrate.
What is Jesus saying here? you are allowing your religious beliefs (i.e. your religion) to rule over your actions, rather than allowing your relationship with God to rule over your actions.
Think of it this way… you are more focused on your spiritual practices than on those hurting around you.
EVER SIT IN CHURCH… caught up in the incredible worship, the spirit of God moving, the amazing preaching and insight into Gods word… the families and relationships you love to connect with… but so focused on those you forget that maybe, just maybe there are those around you hurting, oppressed, broke, lonely… and we don’t realize it because we are practicing our Sunday ritual… and we don’t want anything to get in the way of it.
Or maybe part of it was that this woman was tormented by a demon for years and the religious experts of the day had never picked up on it. they were truly spiritual blind guides as Jesus called them.
And probably more than anything… they were jealous of Jesus power and fame. it got in the way of their egos. They used religion to serve their cause and not the purpose of Christ.
If your focus as a Christian is Pro life, sex trafficking, racial reconciliation, abstinence, Missions… whatever it is - it should never be above the call of the gospel.
I remember reading a story about a successful lawyer. His daughter was in law school and was going to join him in his practice. One summer home from school she went to church with the family (they did this their whole lives) This Sunday the pastor talked about picking up your cross and laying down your life for the sake of Christ. The father was agreement and even said amen a few times. That week he came to the pastors house and said it was an emergency. he told the pastor that he had to talk to his daughter because she had decided to give up her pursuit of her law degree and go feed starving children in Thailand. The pastor said to the man “you seemed in full agreement to the message that was preached Sunday”. the man said yes, but not for my daughter.
This is the breakdown. When the relationship gets in the way of our religion. We realize God wants our hearts to hurt so much for his cause that we pursue others for him regardless of our own plans, ego, popularity or financial loss.

3 things to make life great

2 Cor. 4:16-18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Three things you need to make life its best in the long run.
Health (outwardly we are wasting away… so the goal is to waste away as slowly as possible, fight it
- I don’t post a lot about my physical accomplishments or my physical accolades. Only on my Bday so that I can brag on Jesus and his healing on my body. But it goes without saying that without health you got nothing…
Emerson said “life belongs to the energetic”. I couldn’t agree more.
I have visions of spoiling my grandkids the way my parents did to my kids. Waterskiing with them, bike riding with them, skateboarding with them. Staying up late with them watching movies and driving them across the country to do cool things!
No matter how spiritual you are- if you are unhealthy it does not matter. If you can’t get out, walk, talk, meet and greet with out huffing and puffing or simply you die before your time due to heart, weight, lungs, etc…
My father set an amazing example. You do not have to lift weights like I do… I am not disciplined… I really am not, I love lifting weights and I do not struggle going to the gym. The lesson is find what exercise you love and just start doing it.
God gave you a temple, quit treating it like a slumlord.
Spiritual vibrancy (Our eternal glory)
This past week I had 2 of many amazing opportunities to use my spiritual life in everyday life.
Staples: Demon oppressed girl
CEO: Nutrition company- prophetic word.
I don’t care how healthy you are, or how rich y0u are or how many toys you have… if you can’t use your life for Christ… you will always feel unfulfilled - and there are a lot of Christian men out there who will go to heaven… but will not have lived the Xn walk they were meant to live, You have so many lives to touch… go for it. My highlights in life are family, music, lifting, guns and guitars… but at the top of the list is the spiritual accomplishments Christ has given me to do. Eph. he has prepared Good works for us to do!
I would much rather sit and tell stories of God and his works than anything else in life - even family… but its a close second.
Friends - Paul is writing this to the family of God. The body of Christ.
Yes it leads me into the seasoning in life. Life is bland without great friends. How do you make great friends? By being a great friend.
They say friends are the family you get to choose for yourself- I couldn’t agree more.
I mean think about it: Friends determine your habits, your ideals, your language, your spiritual depth, many times your goals, your marriage and your finances. They are the best thing going for you or the worst thing going for you.
Some day in the near future I am going to go on a cruise with about 10 couples who are best friends to Kim and I… because I can’t think of a better way to go on a cruise. Talk, eat, laugh and repeat! I talked last night to Erik Peacock (you know him, he is on our TDA board and has done some amazing podcasts here on health and fitness) he called to say Happy Bday and we just talked, laughed, thought out loud, listened and enjoyed each others recent victories, we asked questions about health, business, Jesus and family… it was rich - it was good - it was God in and among two friends.
I could talk about so many great friends…
Matt, Pete, Scott, Jon, Erik, Brandon, Daren, Elijah, Tyrone, Phil, Justin, Joe (who else do you call to borrow a bullet proof vest from ??? right joe?)
So lets say you know you will never have tons of money, prestige, power or accolades… anyone can have lots of friends… and trust me- its of more value and it just tastes better.
Remember God does not change us 100%. He changes us 70% and uses our friends to change the other 30%… so make sure they are doing it right!

Pete, Matt, Matt, Ty, Rick
today was an interesting scripture and prayer time.
I finished both books of Samuel… and had these thoughts:
King David… 1st and 2nd Samuel is a tragedy in my eyes. David given it all, set the bar high, kept honoring King Saul even though he wanted to kill him. Fought like a champion of champions and raised up an army that might never be matched. He had at least 6 wives, numerous concubines, riches, position, admiration, talent, power… He had it all and he let his penis make a decision that ruined him. EVERYTHING came crashing down… burned it to the ground. His family is caustic on every front… I am not even sure why he allowed the throne to continue in Davids family…
But God called him a man after Gods own heart. He had it all, threw it away, and God still loved him.
Post Jesus
Then I flipped to my NT portion of scripture and started to read out of Luke 15
The Prodigals son.
As I prayed and meditated over these stories my heart and eyes were opened up. I was playing the part of the prodigals brother in how I viewed Davids life.
When in reality now after the cross we are all allowed to be a prodigal and know that God will welcome us back… am I saying sin and relax because God will forgive you? NO, you will still reap what you sow even though you will still have a relationship with God and go to heaven.
I want to remind you all no mater where you are all at, you are loved by God regardless of what people say or think. So if you have some of those brothers judging you, just simply trust Gods grace.

Everlasting Gobstopper - many colors, many flavors!
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8-9).
But if my thoughts are contrary to God’s, then I must exchange my thinking with God’s and for that process, He has given us His inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word. So what is our need? We are to study the Scripture, but for that to be effective, we also need to develop the art of biblical meditation.
Eastern meditation is to empty your mind and allow any thoughts into it. But biblical meditation is to chew on Gods word and allow his thoughts to permeate your heart and spirit!
What is the benefit of biblical meditation?
Greater insight into his word.
Better understanding of how to apply it to ones life.
Deepens our desire for worship and communion with Christ.
Brings greater life to our daily walk- encouraging.
Transformation of our mind, desires and vision for our life.
Basic steps:
What does the text say?
What did it mean in that context?
What does it mean to me?
What are greater insights God may give me?
Chew on it for a day, a week or even longer.
