When you die… Wow he was so much like ________
We all battle with comparison.
But when you get to heaven God is not going to say “how come you were not more like your brother, your neighbor, the movie star, the people on instagram….
He may in fact say “how come you were not the person I created you to be”.
you know why you can’t compare yourself? Because there is only one of you. There is no Garth 1.0 that can be compared to the Garth 2.0!
My focus should be on Jesus, and when we compare we are not looking at Jesus, but rather others. Thats the danger we take our eyes of Jesus.
Galatians 6:4-5 the Message
Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.
- Don’t let others compare you
THE STORY WAS TOLD…
After her election the first Jewish woman President called her mother to invite her to the inauguration. The mother agreed to come and when the great day arrived she was seated among Supreme Court Justices and Cabinet Members. Just a short time into the solemn ceremony, she nudged the man to her left. “You see that girl with her hand on the Bible?” The mother said with great excitement. “Her brother’s a doctor!”
Parents? Spouse? Instagram?
The Prophet Samuel was even fooled by appearances when he went to Jesses house to find the new King.
Why would I listen to someone else’s comparison of me when they don’t know Gods plan for me?
Compare yourself only to what the Word of God says you are.

Mindjack

In the nineteenth century PRUSSIA pulled off one of the greatest heists of all time… ok it wasn’t a heist as much as it was a mindjack… what’s a mindjack? Well I just made up that term so make sure you quote me when you use it. But the point is Prussia needed to fund its war against France. So the kingdoms royal family pulled the first ever mindjack on its country… now a mindjack can be good or bad… this one was genius. Princess Marianne appealed to all the wealthy aristocrats to turn in their gold jewelry… thats right, bracelets, necklaces, chokers, earrings, Tierra's and all things such and have them remade in iron. The replicas would be stamped with the words “Gold Gab Ich Fure Eisen” Which stood for “I gave gold for iron”. And This gold would fund the war… and women lined up for miles to do so.
Why?
Because the power of perception. It was of far greater status to have iron than gold… It meant you have enough money to trade in your gold… as if you didn’t need it. And you were so important that it doesn’t matter if you wear iron, or gold.
Bottom line: They felt so secure in who they were they didn’t need gold to define them.
Here is the mindjack for men to understand… the greatest attraction to other men - regarding your witness are the things you give up, not the things you have.
You are invited to a NFL game and you turn it down and explain to the individual that you have a praise and worship night at church on that date. To this person it makes no sense… mindjack.
You change jobs and make less money… when your previous co-workers ask you why you say because you have more time to raise your kids and get them more involved in church - mindjack.
You are asked why your son was not at the game on Wednesday… you say “oh that is the night we have church and we believe it’s more important than sports”… mindjack
Your wife blows up at you in front of the neighbors… you walk over to her and calmly tell her how much you love her and the you are sorry for her being upset and hug her… the neighbors don’t understand why you don’t put her in her place… mindjack.
Phil.3:8More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ…
Mindjack… Paul is saying I will give up all, everything in order to make God look good. What does that say to those around me if I choose the same attitude?
It means there must be something to this thing… Others might even think… my religion doesn’t do that for me. Maybe its more than just religion.
Surpassing excellence - Gk far superior. Do you choose to live a life that exemplifies choices and goals that are far superior to what others think. Are you willing to be misunderstood making choices that the world just does not comprehend?
I hope so… Because I believe there are men all around us who are just one mindjack away from checking out what true Christianity is.

Where do we go from here?

But The idea is to equip men to greater influencers in their own world. To influence others closer to Christ.

Picture this.
It’s a stormy night.
Lightning bolts are slashing through the dark sky.
The wind is ferocious, making the water angry.
The air is cold, the type that leaves goosebumps on your arms and chills down your spine...
Amidst this, a boat gets capsized in mother nature’s path of destruction.
So the Coast Guard goes out to rescue it. They load up their men in the helicopter and locate the boat.
But once they hover over the top of the boat, they realize something…
There are more people in the water than there is space in the helicopter.
So what do they do? Who do they save?
Who would you save?
I know, it’s tough to answer.
But realistically, they can’t save everyone. It’s not possible.
So, they decide who to save based on a motto...
Can you guess what it is?
Their motto is - “We can only save the people who swim towards us.”
That makes the nearly impossible decision possible.
Now, I want you to think about this in terms of your TDA. You know I want to serve and help everyone, but it’s not possible.
Just like the Coast Guard, I can only help the people who swim towards me.
The moment you try to help someone and they push you back - you have to stop. If they are flailing around or swimming away from you, you can’t help them.
I Accept it.
They don’t want your help. Maybe they aren’t ready, and that’s okay. Hopefully, they swim toward you at some point. But if they don’t, the helicopter (you) has to leave.
Look I don’t share this much if at all… and I am not a whiner… but there are constantly haters of the podcast and the mens seminar… they point all the things that are wrong, all the things they think are lies or poor theology or they pick on me because of my personality… I get.
BUT Trying to help people that don’t want your help is the quickest way for you to drown.
And if I drown or you drown, what’s going to happen to all the other people swimming towards you that need your help?
Think about it.

And my wife said to me… “you know what, there are plenty of women out there who get breast cancer and they handle life just fine… grow up”. To which I replied, sorry I got colon cancer hopefully next time I get for breast cancer.
Isn’t cancer fun.
Hey I just celebrated 12 years of a cancer journey… it started in 2008 with a tumor the size of a grapefruit and colon cancer… spread through out my lymph nodes, I got c-dif, then liver cancer with a tumor in my anus, and then a brain tumor… yeah I know - some people are just lucky.
So todays podcast I am going to be a little self indulgent and talk about me. And give you some insights that I learned along the way.
First lesson: life is a battle for everyone. I am no hero. You might be going through a bad marriage, a business failure, a kid who is on drugs, or a million other things… but regardless Jesus is still your number one hope. He is your source, your help, your peace and your secret weapon.
But even while you are going through it… the stress is felt by everyone else around you. I opened up with the conversation my wife and I had… she was burned out, worried sick, literally, about me dying, and had to take care of everything during chemo… I didn’t have to have an attitude check… I could be a pain in the butt because I had cancer- but she had to pretend to hold it all together… and when she didn’t - that was ok.
Remember there are others on this journey with you.
Lesson #2: you will panic, you will lose it, you will get ticked at God…. and he can handle it.
Ride home after hearing you have about 2.5 years to live.
Panic, Paralyzed, pissed and prayed up. There are phases and you will get through them if you better understand them.
Lesson #3 Focus.
So in the middle of my chemo for liver cancer I had some tests… they came back saying I would not most likely make it to the next year. I freaked out, went back to my doctors the next day to talk to him about it. I did not have an appointment, but I just waited… he was always walking through the chemo room among the patients and I knew everyone so I just waited. When He came out I jumped on him… he could tell I was freaking out literally over the percentages. He got mad at me… he said there are only 2 choices “Live or Die”, what do you want to do? I said Live - he said “then Fuck percentages and focus on living”.
Focus!
Lesson 4
The one thing I could call on through out this whole ordeal was that I understood (because of the way my father raised me and the example he set) was that I chose to serve God in whatever role he put me in. Did I think it would be the role as a cancer patient? Nope… but that does not change my understanding of what it means to be a Christian. I was reminded by my parents that people come and go in their commitment to Christ… but thats not how it works. You serve him wether life is good, bad or flat… you serve him because he is worthy, he is worth it- PERIOD. Life is not measured in time… time is limited. God sees time as a slice in the middle of eternity. My real role is how I will serve him in heaven. Life is just practice, it is a drill an obstacle course if you will. I get that, I have a deep understanding of that. So I choose to never give up, slide back, get luke warm, change scripture to meet my insecurities or change Gods word to meet my foibles. I will serve God even if he filets me and serves me on a gold plate to satan. He is still worth it, he is worthy.

Matt. 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Eph. 2:10 God has prepared for us in advancer good works.
Good works = employment in the kingdom of God
You want to know why I can’t wait to get to heaven?
Ever go to someones house and maybe its you and a few other couples or people… after dinner the husband wants to take you to where his treasures are. The garage where he has a 67 vette, or his basement where he has his guns or his studio where he has his guitars… or he work shed where he has his tools etc…
THEY CAN’T WAIT TO SHOW YOU THEIR TREASURES
WANT TO KNOW WHY I CAN’T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN?
Thats where my treasures are! MY GOOD WORKS!
People will come up to me and say… hey you did such and such and this and that…. and it changed my life!
V. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
YOUR TREASURES SHOULD BE DOING GODS WORKS!
When that happens a switch is flipped… life has an immense meaning and purpose! YOU ARE ON
OVER TIME
WHAT HAPPENS WITH SEEKING HIS KINGDOM IN ALL THINGS?
FIRST YOU SEE GOOD WORKS IN THE NATURAL YOU CAN DO…. BUT THEN
You start to see things in the spiritual realm…
You see principalities, powers, the warfare, the demonic…
Young man who comes down for prayer… his leg is wrapped in barbed wire and on fire…

When I was in my 20’s I worked out at the Northwestern University gym… a lot of athletes worked out there and a few of the Bears players… including Jim McMahon.
One day I asked a guy if he was a student at the School and he said no I just work out here.. wow how do you get to work out here… he said kind of nonchalantly “im a professional baseball player”.
Wake the faith up…
yes he was a professional baseball player… but it wasn’t as spectacular as I had thought. I found out he was playing for a farm team in Double AA ball… so yeah he was but he wasn’t.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT A CONTRONYM
Words That Are Their Own Opposites
A contronym is a word that is its own antonym.Sound unusual?
You probably use contronyms every day…
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES.
Oversight can mean both"watchful supervision"and"an inadvertent omission."
Left means both"departed"and"remaining."
Dust can mean"to add dust"(to crops)or"to remove dust"(from furniture).
Cleave means either"to cling/adhere"or"to split/sever."
Off means both"deactivated"(turn that off)and
"activated"(the alarm went off).
Here is a contronym for you…
Christian man…
It can mean a nice guy who is religious but powerless
Or it can mean
A man who knows God and walks in his power.
Has anyone ever asked you “are you a believer”. Well what does that mean.
Are YOU a believer?
James 2:19 You say you are a believer… great, even the demons are believers.
So what is a believer?
I am a Believer…. but I act on my belief.
What are you today? Are you a believer or a believer?
Make today a day that you are no longer a contronym!

Bling Bling and the Ghost

I used to work in the inner city of Chicago and Seattle and I lived and hung out in some of the nastiest places in Dallas…. one question that always bothered me…
Why do men wear outlandish expensive Jewelry? Even if you can pull it off and it looks good… what is the real hidden reason behind it.
Wearing expensive jewelry as a man has its many possibilities. But wearing expensive ostentatious loud and bulky bling has a full spectrum of ideals behind it… especially if you wear it down in any rough and tumble inner city. What would cause a person/ even a gangbanger to do this?
Simply enough: You have to have the look to pull it off… You typically know if you have the look- if you are not sure if you have the look… You don’t have the look. Secondly you have to be able to afford it. Wearing that type of bling says you got some type of major side hustle going on. You been spittoon rhymes or selling dimes… but you got something working. But the biggest reason you may wear it is you are telling the world I am just bad enough and mean enough to protect it if you wanna try to come and get it. Its your BA calling card if you will. It is saying, I got the skills and the boys to back this up- so don’t try me.
Think of your spiritual life in those terms. When you walk out the door and you are swagging the Holy Spirit, you know - you are talking about Jesus, praying, giving him glory and making him known. Sharing the gospel, going out of your way to find people to pray for…
What would give you the guts to do that?
You know you got the skills and the ghost to back you up.
What does the Holy spirit do for us as believers?
Well here are just a few from the scriptures.
He is our helper
He is our power
He is our transformer
He is our teacher
He is our gift giver
He is our love giver
He is our built in evangelist
He is our prayer partner
He produces the fruits of the spirit (love joy peace long-suffering, hope, mercy, grace etc…
He give us a prayer language
He gives us power
Why do we as men walk with such confidence in God? Because we got the ghost and the power to back it up!
Walk loud, pray bold, speak plain and live outrageously on fire for God!

SNAKE OIL!
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
Wednesday Sep 09, 2020
webstix.com Tony Herman - the coolest cat on the net
He’s just a snake oil salesman… Gross right?
But what it means today is that a snake oil salesman is commonly used in English to describe a quack, huckster, or charlatan - you know someone who will sell you a piece of equipment that vibrates, and calls it exercise equipment and then claims you will lose tons of weight and gain muscle… and even adds “its like not even working out”.
Well at least they got that right- it’s not working out and it’s not working out.
Hey lets gear up for the election with some extra prayer, some extra conversations with people about getting out and voting in person this November.
My take is this… without getting into a debate…
I believe there is a demonic stronghold over America due to our prochoice/abortion/murder agenda in our country. I vote pro-life. Period!
The term snake oil salesman started all the way back with Clark Stanley, aka The Rattlesnake King. In an 1897.
You see he stirred up quite a ruckus at the worlds exposition in Chicago. He plucked a rattle snake out of a burlap sack, cut it down the middle, threw it in boiling hot water and skimmed the fat off the top and claimed it was snake oil and would heal any ailment. People bought it up like crazy… The only problem- it didn’t actually have any snake oil in it. In fact his real oil that he sold was a mixture of mineral oil, beef fat, red pepper and Turpentine. Now everyone who claimed to sell snake oil was looked at as a fraud.
But what’s the problem? Well the truth is that in the 1800’s hundreds thousands of Chinese came over as indentured servants… serving typically a 5 year run before they were free. Many of them worked on the railroads. One of the things they brought over with them was snake oil… but it was the real deal. It was derived from the Chinese Water snake. It was loaded in omega 3’s, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA and with potent analgesic and anti inflammatory properties. THE BOTTOM LINE- IT WORKED!
They shared it with their white men counter parts and they were amazed… but you can’t find Chinese water snakes in the good old USA. So they faked it and sold it to people who wanted to believe it was real!
1 Kings 22
Ahab the king of Israel says to Jehoshaphat lets go to war against the people of Ramath Gilead… it belongs to us. So Ahab calls on his 400 prophets… what will happen? The prophets say oh you will surely win this war, the Lord has give you victory.
But Jehoshaphat says Don’t you have any prophets that are actually from the Lord? So they get Micaiah… he says to the King if Israel “oh yeah, your gonna win this one, its in the bag, go and get it you knucklehead”. DRIPPING WITH SARCASM… Well it turns out he gets slapped for his sarcasm and says “actually you gonna die”. PERIOD. Jehoshaphat and Ahab go out into battle. Ahab disguises himself and yet an archer on the opposing army shoots a random arrow at the army and strikes down Ahab.
in second Kings chapter one we see the new King do the same thing. he wants to go and check with foreign Gods about his life. Elijah calls him out. The king sends a commander and 50 soldiers to come get him. The commander says “oh man of God, you need to come with me… Elijah says if I am a man of God fire will come down and destroy you and your men BOOOOM! The king sends another commander and 50 men and the same things happens… the king sends another commander and 50 men… this guy treads lightly. Elijah spares he and his mens lives.
Whats the point? We live in a world where we can get our own answers depending on what we want to hear.
The lesson:
There are a lot of snake oil salesmen out there in todays world… and even Gods word can sound like snake oil to many… but the difference? IT WORKS!
Go to God and listen only to him regardless of what YOU want to hear and regardless of what others say.
Secondly, don’t be afraid to speak Gods word even when it flys in the face of the popular priests of our day (or the popular snake oil salesman of today)… you know Oprah, BLM, Politicians, scientists, doctors, actors etc…
Thirdly, know that God will deliver you by you simply speaking the truth. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK THE TRUTH! For in the truth there is power.

In 2000 I was given the chance to candidate for my fathers position at the church he had grown from a handful of people into a mega church, with a daycare of 300 families, a school K-12 of 300 students, a missions and church planting church that was thriving! I immediately said NO Thank you… how did I know to say No so quickly? That is where we are going today.
Hey lets gear up for the election with some extra prayer, some extra conversations with people about getting out and voting in person this November.

Remember the "Maxwell Rule of Timing" --
"The wrong decision at the wrong time is a disaster. The wrong decision at the right time is a mistake. The right decision at the wrong time is unacceptable. The right decision at the right time leads... to success."
Quoted by Elmer Towns in Leaders on Leadership
I May not be in charge of my life, but I am in charge of my choices. Garth Heckman
How to make Godly choices
- Is this a decision that has to be made? (You are offered a new job, a business to buy, a stock to invest in, a conversation with your daughter, a surgery to have done…)
- Does the word of God give specific directions to this choice? Then follow it!
- Talk to other strong Christian men and woman who have been in this decision who have succeeded and failed.
- Whats the worst that could happen if you don’t make this decision?
- Whats the worst that could happen if you do make this decision and it goes terribly wrong?
- Whats the best that can happen?
- How long will this decision take to come to fruition? (Noah waited 120 years)
- Wether it goes good or goes bad, can you Glorify God in it?
Remember all a decision really is, comes down to creating your future. How does it create your future if it goes totally bad or totally good. Can you handle either… Don’t fool yourself, tremendous good can be just as hard to handle as bad.

Jesus goes off!

I spoke at a denominational youth conference about 12 years ago… I did a fun gag about how I could never trust superman because he wore his underwear on the outside of his pants… lets be honest. Tights!
So I egg the kids on (about 1000) would you be able to listen to me and trust me if I was up here with my underwear on over some tights?
So I drop my pants… and I am wearing bright red baggy silk underwear on over blue tights with the red pulled up tube socks… and the kids went nuts.
BUT AFTER THE SERVICE… a bunch of the youth pastors wanted to talk to me. I promise you can’t make this stuff up - they wanted to know how come I was promoting homosexuality WHUH?
I had one particular youth pastor berate me for weeks over social media, emails, texts…
Finally I had it. I said if you are such a super Christian I will fly you here to Minnesota and we can go head to head in our Christian walk. Lets see who tells more people about Jesus, how many people we lead to Jesus, how many people you heal versus I heal, how many prophetic words you give versus how many I give…
I MEAN I HONESTLY LOST IT… I told him his Christianity wasn’t worth the paper his bible was printed on. I CALLED HIM OUT.
You know the rest of that story was that last day at the conference when I spoke I got up and lambasted the youth pastors - I rebuked them for being more passionate and upset about me wearing tights then about people going to hell…
I walked off stage and the head of their denominational youth conference handed me my check, said you should probably just leave right now… and oh yeah… we probably won’t ever have you back.
Have you ever called someone out for a bad Christian walk, life?
It’s pretty ballsy!
You know the only people Jesus ever Got mad at were the Religious people. People who were so full of right and wrong they were no good to the kingdom of heaven.
What do you do when someone calls you out?
We see two distinct sides to how its done in the scriptures.
In John chapter 8 Jesus goes all out on the pharisees. I mean he tears them up one side and down the other.
He calls them liars, children of satan who is the father of lies, he calls them blind and that they do not know God. He says they will die in their sins. You are from hell.
Soooo what happens next?
The Pharisees try to slur and defame Christ by innuendo -
He’s demon possessed
He is illegitimate,
and they throw in a racial slur for good measure
Read verses 41-48
And here is how we should act… Jesus doesn’t even dignify it by comment. He doesn’t even let it resonate with him. He will call them out on their backslidden ways… but he won’t get petty, he won’t attack their attacks. He simply states the truth without rebuttal and without attitude regarding their smear tactics.
This is what I aspire to. I am not saying I am there yet… but may that be what we all aspire to. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
