Winner
Winner
Here is a hard concept for some to understand… if you want to be a winner (and who doesn’t) than simply quit trying to win… and start trying not to lose.
Its not about winning, its about not losing.
More neurons fire in competition i.e. proving I am not a loser, than when at rest… i.e. I am a winner. The mind of the top performers like Michael Jordan were not driven to the highest peak performances because they went into competition thinking they were winners, but rather to prove they were in fact not losers. Your brain works harder and fires at a much higher rate when not relying on your winning mindset but rather your mindset of I am not a loser.
Lets dumb it down a little. Lets say we meet at the locker room and I am seriously and meaningfully telling you what a great player you are. I go over your past victories, over your past top performances and then we go out to the field to actually play. You will tap into your prefrontal cortex and show me how good you are, but it will be limited because you are in a sense resting on your victories. However if we meet in the locker room and I question your talent, I minimize your victories and I challenge your accomplishments and THEN we go out to the field to play… watch out. You are now tapping into your full Lateral Prefrontal cortex and your synapses and dendrites are hyper firing at a much greater degree. STREET TALK: You out to prove you ain’t no punk!
- Watanabe M, Sakagami M (2007) Integration of cognitive and motivational context information in the primate prefrontal cortex. Cereb Cortex 17(Suppl 1):i101–i109.
We were especially interested in the lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC), because competition involves both cognitive (such as rules and strategy) and motivational (desire to obtain a reward) components, and the LPFC is known to be involved in the integration of cognitive and motivational information.
Again, the brain rests when it achieves victory. It fires less when it is perceived as a winner.
Have you heard the interviews of athletes who competed against Michael Jordan. He would play cards against someone until he won. It went beyond just losing, He could not stand being considered a loser or seen as a loser.
Do you want to be a winner? Then set out to see the potential God has give you. Set out to see all the resources you have at your hands. Realize that you are not here to be a loser. You work, strive, create, practice, perform, read, risk etc… no matter how much you lose in the process you do this until you win and in order to prove you are not a loser. And when you win… you realize that you are only as good as your next victory. That is Key!
Listen to these verses:
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Psalm 139:13-15
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I cannot accept being a loser when I see how much God has poured into me.
