Wanker - Definition: Someone excessively and annoyingly pretentious and/or false. At the gym the other day… Now before I get into this let me just say when it comes to the gym I attend, there are a few details one must understand about me. It is a big box gym. I know just about everyone. I am asked daily for training advice and give it freely. I used to own a powerlifting gym that was voted number 1 in the country. I never assume or ask why someone is doing a certain exercise a certain way unless they will hurt themselves. So there is a young kid about 16 training a very pretty girlfriend… I only mention that because this kid had insecure arrogant 4 out of 10 stars all over him. But I walked up to them and kindly and jokingly asked if the old guy could give them advice… from the second the sentence left my mouth this kid explained to my what he was doing, why he was doing it and how I didn’t understand. I kindly said “well, if you want to save your knees you might think about doing this”. He again explained to me why I (and about every other strength coach in the world does not know what they are talking about). I smiled and said as serious as I could “wow, I didn’t know that you knew everything, good for you”. And simply walked away. What a Wanker!
You know why most people and I mean 99.99% of most people succeed? They willingly seek out advice from others who are smarter than themselves. It really is that simple. Perseverance is great unless you are headed the wrong way. Reading and studying the competition is great unless you can actually talk to them and or even hire them… so much better. When I was young I thought it was cool to know everything… but nobody else thought it was cool that I KNEW EVERYTHING. I went to a conference and my brother in law and I went to eat lunch. We got a chance to bump into and eat with one of the most renowned speakers in the world regarding theology. (Im a geek). My brother in law plastered him with questions. At one point he smiled and said “thats all I know now, but I hope to continue to learn from more discussions like this”. Look he could have buried by Bro in seconds. But he was kind, calm, reflective and still seeking to learn from us. I walked away from their thinking, “I am going to buy every book this guy has ever written and read them”. And I did. You can learn a lot from really smart people, and sometimes it is simply that you can learn from anyone if you check your ego at the coat rack.
Take this reality check: fill a note book up with a list of things you do not know. The easier it is, the less of a wanker you are.
Now Read this and do it again:
Psalms 139:23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Search Gk= intimately and deeply penetrate every area of my life in detail.
anxious Gk - Secret thoughts, unknown to me.
now with God telling you what to work on, begin to pray over these. And keep continuing to work on them.
