Lou Gehrig vs. Babe Ruth
Babe Ruth was the most untapped potential and possibly the worst example of an athlete or idol.
Breakfast - had a quart of bourbon and ginger ale in order to wash down the steak, up to a dozen eggs and potatoes he ate every morning.
The Boston Post reported that according to Ruth's wife, almost every day, he ate "two-and-a-half pounds of rare beef steak" with a whole bottle of chili sauce. He would eat two massive dinners with two gigantic snacks in between. Each dinner consisted of two porterhouse steaks, a double-order of cottage-fried potatoes, two heads of lettuce, and two apple pies a la mode. Both "snacks" were made up of four hot dogs and four bottles of Coca-Cola.
His temperament was not much better than his eating habits. He openly bullied and mocked smaller men in stature- making them the butt of jokes. He was a womanizer and more than once had women threaten him and come after him for what he did to them or how he treated them.
He fought with fans, with teammates, with umpires and with the commissioner of baseball.
He never exercised, he ate like a pig and lived life solely off of his pure genetic talent.
Some call him the greatest… but he truly could have been the greatest… of any athlete anywhere in any time of history if he had not insulted his talent with sheer disdain.
people argue over what he could have done if he had eaten right, exercised, learned to control his fury and what could have truly happened to the Yankees if he had learned to encourage and teach his teammates… they could have had a run much like the NBA Bulls with MJ or even longer.
You only have so much time and so much talent. Do you mock it, insult it by not giving your all to what you do and more importantly to who you are?
This of Solomon who much like Babe Ruth had it all. He had all that wisdom, insight, wealth, power, influence and he mocked it by simply using it selfishly for himself. He did amazing things… but only for himself. He could have money to build or buy anything. He could have 2-3 different beautiful women in his bedroom every night - FOR A YEAR - without repeating a single visit from any of them. He had the fear and admonition of the world, he could have harnessed the power of his full capacity and Gods favor to leave an eternal legacy… but he did not. At the end of his life he simply said “vanity vanity what does man gain for all his toil”.
he realizes in this moment what a waste of potential. He had poured out all God had given to him for some cheap applause, a stable of fast horses and even faster women. And at the end of his life he had nothing eternal to show for it.
Everyone has a legacy.
You have a legacy.
Will it be one recorded in Gods diary…
Or will it be used as scratch paper for a to do list in heaven.
