Mark 4:21-25 Wuest Translation
And he was saying to them, the lamp does not come, does it, in order to be placed under the peck measure or under the reclining couch? does it not come in order to be placed upon the lamp stand? for there is not anything which is hidden, expect it be in order that it might be made known, nor has anything become hidden but in order that it might come into full view. assuming that a person has ears to be hearing, let him be hearing. and he was saying to them, keep ever a watchful eye on what you are hearing. in the measure by which you are measuring it will be measured to you. and it will be measured to you not only according to that measure, but there will be some added on top of that. for he who has it shall babe given to him. and he who does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away from him.
Message:
21-22 Jesus went on: “Does anyone bring a lamp home and put it under a bucket or beneath the bed? Don’t you put it up on a table or on the mantel? We’re not keeping secrets, we’re telling them; we’re not hiding things, we’re bringing them out into the open.
23 “Are you listening to this? Really listening?
24-25 “Listen carefully to what I am saying—and be wary of the shrewd advice that tells you how to get ahead in the world on your own. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity. Stinginess impoverishes.”
NASB
21 And He was saying to them, “A lamp is not brought to be put under a [f]basket, or under a bed, is it? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand? 22 For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, [g]let him hear.” 24 And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. [h]By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. 25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
What you listen to will in turn start to show up and feed you more of the same. Many call it a self fulfilling prophecy. Look if you are told blacks are criminals, hispanics are lazy, white people think they are better than others, asians can’t drive, Indians are drunks…
I once read in a book a line that really bothered me.. and in todays world - well, now it really bothers me. The author said this “you can never have enough information”.
That sounds great right?
But what if its wrong information… what if its information that is racist, anti faith, information that is strictly from a secular, worldly fleshly view. What if its information that does not inquire or understand the spiritual world or who God is. Then cut it off.
I can always find information that backs up my opinion… the key is to find information that is biblical.
Look at verse 23-25
23 If anyone has ears to hear, [g]let him hear.” 24 And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. [h]By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. 25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
We have often heard and understood the concept of reaping and sowing. You give money to God, to the poor etc… you will reap that blessing. You plant seeds in an area of your life and you will reap that. If you sow seeds of helping others you will reap a great network of people there for you.
*But this scripture takes it to a new level. What ever you listen to, you will reap more of that information. And here is the catch…
Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
You have heard that right? This is exactly what Christ is saying but breaking it down in a supernatural way. Not only what you think on will ultimately be your destiny… but what you think on will be a catalyst, it will cause a proliferation of thoughts which in turn speed up and put your life on the fast track of that outcome.
i.e. think on scripture, quickly live a life like Jesus, think on Facebook, CNN, twitter, Tik tock, instagram etc… and live that destiny in short order.
Its not the source that is the problem, it is the formula behind it. The formula works regardless of what you plant - just like dirt. But your mind, unlike dirt has a spiritual component to it that can reproduce at light speeds that upon which you are plugging into your ears.
You will begin to hear things and you will interpret them according to what you have been listening to… you know the stupid meme on Facebook. Someone posts I like apples… someone responds “you don’t like oranges, you hate Florida… why don’t you like old people… you careless idiot, I hate you”.
This is what happens in real life when we are not careful what we listen to and compare it to scripture… it ends up all being biased and vile because that is how we will interpret it.
