I don’t want to waste my life… I don’t think anyone does. So I have been on a quest to find out what allows someone to get the most out of their life… What I am talking about is how do I make the biggest impact I can make in my life time.
Have you ever asked yourself what does it take to make an impact on the world, or at least a bigger impact through my own life?
I have learned one thing in my 57 years here on earth, the greater the impact you want to make I must practice these three things… Now I am not saying this the final 3, or that there may not be a few others… but for the most part I think Im on track. What are they?
Number 1…
- To make a greater impact in and through my life I must learn to say No more.
It would seem counter intuitive to do less and expect more… but trust me its not. There is a power in saying no that allows you the time, effort and energy to say yes to the things you are passionate about. The things you know God has called you to do.
I would imagine one of the curses of having lots of money is that everyone has a cause they want you to get behind… well guess what? We all have something that is even more valuable than money - thats time. On your death bed you won’t wish for more money… But I bet you would take more time in a heart beat.
So to get the biggest bang for my buck with my time, I have promised to say No to 5 things for everything I might say yes to. Or I tell myself to only say yes to one thing a day…. or even make rules that if I say yes to one thing, I must eliminate something else in my life. What I am trying to say is that to speak NO is more important than speaking 5 languages.
What does Scripture say “redeem the time”
Eph. 4:15Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is
If we truly want to use our time better we better realize that God has some things he wants us to say yes to and other things he wants us to say no to. More often than not, No is better than yes.
Number 2 If I want to make a bigger impact with my life
- there are friends I need to break away from.
I have lots of friends… now I am not saying to make them enemies, but what I am saying is that I must have a very specific goal behind every friendship. I just posted to a friends post about this stating that I believe out of 10 friends, you should have 3 you pour into (you might call that discipleship), 4 that you are equal with for support and friendship, and 3 that pour into you (personal mentors)
You know Jesus wasn’t everyones friend. He had a best friend, John, He had 3 close friends Peter James and John, He had 12 that he called disciples or friends, he had 72 that were other disciples… more like business associates, and he had 120 that were on the outskirts but followers. Now he had thousands that wanted his attention… but he never felt pressured to break out of those circles. Every friendship, acquaintance and person he met fit his purpose. You should try it!
Number 3
- do what you’re good at and leave the rest behind…
Here is a secret to be good at something means you must first be bad at it. I know people say if you love what you do you will never work another day of your life…. ok, but what if what you love doesn’t pay the bills. And honestly, skill trumps passion. I would rather do what I am skilled at, good at, then simply what I love… So I gotta know what I am good at before I worry about what I am passionate about…. look right now I don’t know anyone who is hiring for people who want back rubs while listening to 80’s hair metal and eating donuts…SO IT LOOKS LIKE IM GONNA STARVE… but what am I passionate about… Can I get good at it? Because typically what I am passionate about I get good at and I fall in love with. You study the disciples lives and they were not good at being followers of Jesus. Arguing, fighting, posturing who is better more liked, who will sit with the Jesus in heaven, can’t heal people, doubt Jesus, forget his works… They sucked at being disciples… but they were passionate about it… and in time they got good at it and fell in love with it and even gave up their lives for it.
So there you go, Say no, make friendships purposeful, and find your passion… and impact awaits!
