Joshua 14
Caleb… thirty verses define his life. Only 30, what do they say about him?
If you could only have thirty verses about your life… what would they say.
He had energy, health and enthusiasm… even at the age of 85
Numbers 13 he believed in Gods mission for his life.
What is Gods mission for your life.
His mindset was I expect things from God, I expect his promises in my life. I expect God to use me.
Caleb was faithful over the long haul.
SOME THINGS WE LEARN FROM THE LIFE OF CALEB:
- He walked by faith, stood apart from the crowd, and looked for the hand of God in every situation.
Can you imagine you are coming back into the tent with 11 other older men… they are all talking about the land of Canaan and all somber and discouraged… Caleb stands up to them. He does not bow to their peer pressure…
You know peer pressure is the original virus. You can feel it in a group and if you are even slightly aware it you know what you can and cannot get away with… in order to stay in good company. I have watched peer pressure literally choke a group of men like a cloud entered he room. Caleb knew that his opinion was going to turn over the apple cart. He did not partake of this social stigma, this virus of mindset, He did not drink the kool aid, he spoke his mind, he spoke the truth and he left things in the hand of the leader Moses.
We need to understand what Caleb knew. I will speak the truth, I will then trust in a faithful God and look for his hand and his leading in every situation… and not go by what the crowd thinks.
2. Caleb asked, “Where is God in this? What is He trying to do and to teach me?” He made statements like, “I must deal with this in faith!” and “We are well able.”
What can we see in this for ourselves? Simply put, when he saw the reality of the situation he then called out on Gods faithfulness. When you see a situation that seems hopeless or dire or even impossible… do you bow to the thoughts in your head. the circumstances or do you immediately have scripture you can quote, claim and go to war with. Or better yet do you have past situations that God led you through that you now pull from memory and plop into your faith bank and draw from. When my Doctor said you have about 2 years to do what you have always wanted to do, so make a will, spend time with your family… you only have about 2 years left to live. I pull that day out every now and then when things look sucky… and I laugh and remind myself of Gods faithfulness now from October 21st 2010.
Know your past victories, know your God, know his word.
3. Caleb wasn’t surface, shallow, or small-minded. He was a man of content, character, and commitment.
Caleb didn’t bat an eye when it came to standing up to peer pressure, standing up to giants or even standing up to Joshua and demanding his mountain.
This does not come from a certain type of personality. I know the brash loud mouth follower of Christ seems to have an endless supply of commitment and unashamed drive to serve God… and yes that can be very much personality (I know, I is one) but I have also met plenty of men who quiet, solemn, driven and committed to God beyond repair. They are ruined for jesus… just not a loud mouth about it. They will still hold their ground and their faith.
So if its not personality what is it that makes us men of character? having the right upbringing? it helps… but no. Having Gods favor before we even knew him? Nope, so what gives us character, conviction and commitment?
Simply put, time with Jesus. an authentic man of God is marked by lots of time with Jesus. You may not know how to spend time with Jesus… here is my recommendation. Go get yourself a bible, some praise music, a journal and just start spending time with Jesus… for 10 minutes, then 30, then an hour then 2 hours and see where it goes. That creates an unshakeable man of God.
Final thought… we often hear conversations of “what would you do if… The truth is that a man of God will always do what God wants him to do. it doesn’t matter if it costs him his job, reputation, family connections, money or even his life… this was the life of caleb. Lets follow his lead.
